<![CDATA[The original is a survival battle manga by Noda Satoru, which has been serialized in Weekly Young Jump since 2014. The first season of the TV anime aired from April to June 2018, the second season from October to December 2018, and the third season is scheduled to air from October 2020. Set in Hokkaido and Sakhalin at the end of the Meiji era, the story is about various intersecting intentions surrounding a gold nugget left behind by a prisoner called "Noppera-bo". In addition to the Japanese version, many foreign language versions have been published, including Chinese, Korean, French, Italian, Spanish, English, and German. This time, I would like to introduce the plot of the 21st volume of the manga version for each part.

Synopsis up to Volume 20

Smiling Sugimoto
Sofia and her minions escape from Akou Prison. By meeting Sofia, Asirpa remembers the clue to deciphering the code, which is the Ainu name her late mother gave to her father. Ogata, who senses Asirpa's condition, betrays Kiroranke and takes Asirpa away. The immortal Sugimoto, who was thought to be dead, appears there. Sugimoto gouges out the poisonous arrow that was stuck in Ogata's right eye, saves Ogata's life, and reunites with Asirpa. Tsukishima, Koito, and Tanigaki were each injured in the clash with Kiroranke. Kiroranke died, and Sophia could only watch. Thinking that they would meet Sophia again, Sugimoto and his friends decided to return to Hokkaido. Sugimoto and Asirpa renewed their partner contract. Sugimoto and his friends asked a Russian doctor to treat Okita and Tsukishima. However, Ogata, who was left in the hospital, killed the doctor and escaped.

Goodbye Russia

Shiraishi is hit
Sugimoto and his friends take a break in a Sakhalin Ainu village. They try to leave while it's still light to cover some distance, but Sugimoto is nowhere to be seen. Sugimoto had gone to buy miso to make Asirpa happy. Asirpa and the others search for Sugimoto, but suddenly Shiraishi is shot. The group thinks Ogata has returned after being shot from a considerable distance, and is unable to move. Sugimoto returns and runs straight to Ogata.

Is anything good enough as long as it's delicious?

Kuchikamidango
Kuchikamidango made by a Karafuto Ainu grandmother. Is it a traditional dish of chewing rice once to soften it, then baking it and eating it? Sugimoto and the others seemed to really like it. It was so delicious that Shiraishi asked to eat it raw without cooking it. Sugimoto softened it and gave it directly to Shiraishi... Tanigaki and Nishipa were shocked, but you're normal.

Sniper's Nightmare

Sugimoto and Russian
When Tsukishima noticed that Sugimoto had run to the enemy, he drew attention to them and acted to make it easier for Sugimoto to approach. Thanks to Tsukishima's coordinated strategy, Sugimoto was able to close the distance without being noticed by the enemy, and brought the battle into close quarters. However, the sniper was not Ogata, but a Russian who had a grudge against Ogata.

Is it really Ogata...?

Sharp Koito
Ogata is a professional sniper and also appreciates Sugimoto's fighting skills. Is it possible for such an Ogata to overlook Sugimoto...? Koito's sharp question probably made Tsukishima realize that it was not Ogata.

Caricature

He's the one at fault
A Russian who can't speak Japanese, and Sugimoto who can't speak Russian. The two communicate by drawing pictures. He thought Asirpa and Shiraishi, who had been acting with Ogata for a while, were his comrades, and sniped at Shiraishi. After clearing up the misunderstanding and telling him that Ogata was the only one at fault, he was convinced, and thought that if he stayed with Sugimoto and the others, he would be able to meet Ogata, so he followed them.

Are you playing?

Sugimoto playing
Asirpa and the others rush to Sugimoto's side. Worried about him, they peek inside and... They see the two of them happily drawing something. It's no wonder they ask, "What are you doing!?" Even so, the quality of Sugimoto's drawing is too low (lol)

Things I want to leave behind

Muttering Asirpa
After receiving a telegram from Lieutenant Tsurumi saying, "I will come to pick you up at Odomari in two weeks, so wait until then," Sugimoto and his friends will stay in Toyohara. While each person spends their free time, Sugimoto and Asirpa head to the mountains to catch wolverines. Before entering the mountains, Sugimoto says he will pray, and as he sees Asirpa performing a ritual, he is impressed and says, "Even though you are a new Ainu woman, you always value such rituals." Asirpa was saddened by the fact that tools and culture from long ago were being forgotten, and muttered, "What can we do to preserve them?" Then a motion picture cameraman who had been watching the ceremony appeared. They said that they had recorded a lot of Ainu culture using a filming device called a cinematograph.

Tanigaki Known throughout Sakhalin

Tanigaki Known throughout Sakhalin
Tanigaki says that thanks to Cikapashi, he was not on the radar in Sakhalin. He pretends to be a family member, but his killer phrase is "Nokihi polo (big balls)," and it seems that this one word puts Russians off their guard. Tanigaki is known throughout Karafuto for having big balls, but he seems a little proud of them... As expected, he has a "hard erection!" (laughs)

Cinematograph

Asirpa decides to shoot
The cinematograph, invented in France, filmed the whole world, but in France, Japanese culture, known as Japonism, was popular, so a lot of filming took place in Japan. He was also interested in Ainu culture and kept records, so Arisipa and the others decided to show him some Ainu motion pictures. Impressed, Asirpa suggested that they show Ainu folk tales in motion pictures. The cameraman tried to refuse because he didn't know if it would be interesting, but Sugimoto threatened him and he filmed it.

The story of Pananpe and Penanpe was mostly dirty jokes

The story of Penanpe and Penanpe
The first chapter begins with a scene in which Pananpe drills a hole in the river and puts his penis in. He takes the fish that gather around his penis and lives happily ever after. When Penanpe hears this, he puts his penis in the river in the same way, but it freezes and becomes impossible to remove, so he accidentally cuts off his penis and dies. The second chapter is also an episode about penises, and it doesn't really give you any insight into Ainu culture (lol). Asirpa calls Ushiyama "Chinpo Sensei" and seems to feel some kind of great attraction to penises.

The Distance Between Them

Sugimoto and Asirpa
Thanks to Koito's kind use of a theater, they decided to hold a screening of the movie they had filmed. In it, there was a different video from the one Asirpa and her friends had filmed. Seeing a photo of a young Wilk and his wife living happily, Asirpa learns about her father and mother whom she had never known. A fire broke out during the screening and the screening was cancelled, but Asirpa realized that she had learned a lot from this trip to Sakhalin. Asirpa realized that she had to fight to protect, but Sugimoto didn't want her to fight. Because Sugimoto had killed so many people, he didn't want Asirpa to get her hands dirty.

The moon seen from the trench

Ariko
When Ariko saw the prisoner's tattoo, she noticed that it was similar to the tattoos on her grandmothers' arms and wondered if it was some kind of code. Ainu tattoos vary in shape by region, and Ariko thinks this could indicate a hiding place, but is unable to work out the connection between the tattoos and the prisoners. Ariko handed over Totan Anshi's tattooed skin to Lieutenant Tsurumi as a spy for Hijikata, but Lieutenant Tsurumi knew the details of Totan Anshi's tattoo and realised it belonged to someone else. As Ariko stole all of Lieutenant Tsurumi's tattooed skins and returned to Hijikata, Totan Anshi appeared before him. Totan Anshi was still alive.

A gray color that is almost black

Hijikata
Ariko and Totan Anshi return safely to Hijikata. They steal all five pieces of skin that Lieutenant Tsurumi has, and also steal the one he usually wears while he is taking a bath, so they say that it must be included in the list. Lieutenant Tsurumi tricks Ariko into being a double agent, but Hijikata is wary of Ariko, who has returned safely. Hijikata had originally sent Ariko in on the assumption that he would be found out to be a fake. Hijikata uses Ariko in his strategy to successfully retrieve the six fake tattooed human skins before they are scattered.

Kesorap

Crying Tanigaki
Ryu was promoted to the rank of "Isojoseta", a sled fighting dog, and found his place. Thinking that Ryu would be better taken care of here, Sugimoto and his friends decided to leave him here. Sugimoto and his friends decided to part ways with Henke and Enonoka here. Enonoka, who cares for Cikapashi, said, "I won't say goodbye, I'll wait until Cikapashi comes," and did not try to stop him. As they got on the sled and set off, Cikapashi fell off the sled. Seeing Cikapashi standing there frozen as he recalls Ryu finding his place in the world and his days with Enonoka, Tanigaki tells him to stay and live with Enonoka. Tanigaki gives Cikapashi the gun that was a keepsake from Nihei Tetsuzou, who saved him. Tanigaki and Cikapashi pretended to be a family, but before they knew it, the two had formed a bond like a real father and son.

Become Cikapashi in the true sense of the word!!

Chikapashi Stands Alone
When Chikapashi first appeared, they talked about the origin of his name, and said that it also had the slang meaning of "making the penis erect."

"Standing up on his own... this is also an erection, right? Tanigaki Nishipa," "That's right, it's an erection!! Chikapashi!!" If you look at this exchange alone, it's a really vulgar joke, but it's a cool and touching scene.

Sweet Lies

Koito
Ogata told Koito to ask Lieutenant Tsurumi about the "Manchuria Railway". Koito was concerned about this and before meeting Lieutenant Tsurumi, he confronted Tsukishima about the truth. Koito thought that Lieutenant Tsurumi had saved him, but he learned that it was all a plot by Lieutenant Tsurumi and that Tsukishima had been treated the same way. Tsukishima said that Lieutenant Tsurumi's specialty was to bring people under his control and make them swear loyalty by digging into their wounds and pouring his love into their withered places. Even though he knows this fact, Tsukishima pledges his loyalty to Lieutenant Tsurumi. Koito finds out the truth and gets excited that he needs him after spending so much time and effort on him, but is this his true feelings? Or is he acting out of his inability to accept the truth?

Anger Shiraishi

Asirpa Makes Her Decision

Shiraishi, who had been listening to Koito and Tsukishima's conversation from behind the scenes, becomes more distrustful of Lieutenant Tsurumi. He makes fun of Sugimoto for handing over Asirpa and becoming Lieutenant Tsurumi's dog, and attacks Sugimoto, asking how much of the gold he will get. The story about the gold is probably true, but Shiraishi had seen Asirpa grow during their journey to Sakhalin, and he thought that if Asirpa was going to fight while carrying everything on her shoulders, he should believe in her and let her fight. He also thought that by doing so, Sugimoto himself would be able to return to his former, fierce self. He also advised him to ask if Lieutenant Tsurumi was really thinking about the Ainu. Shiraishi is unreliable in some ways, but he is a reliable comrade who cares about Sugimoto and Asirpa after all. Lieutenant Tsurumi intended to imprison Asirpa in a basement whose existence is unknown. Asirpa wonders why Asirpa is not with Sugimoto, and wonders if she will be imprisoned herself. He says that the Ainu who are still alive will decide how to use the Ainu gold, and fires a volley of poisoned arrows. Sugimoto and Asirpa take advantage of the confusion to escape. Their journey to find the gold has started anew.

If they were true partners...

The two of them run away
When Sugimoto noticed that the arrow was not poisoned, he immediately realized that they were planning to run away. Having grown through their journey in Karafuto, Asirpa decides to act positively. Asirpa wants to hear a positive response, "Let's do it together!", not a negative response, "Don't do it." By believing in Asirpa and acting together with her, as Shiraishi said, Sugimoto will return to his former fierce self.

Will Sugimoto's advance team, which has reunited with Asirpa, be able to return safely to Hokkaido? ! Summary of the latest plot

Volume 21 Table of Contents
What did you think?
The Sakhalin arc ends with Volume 21, and we're on a new journey. I think this is probably all the content for the third season of the anime.
Since there are many key parts of the main story, it seems like there were relatively few comedy elements. I'm curious to see what happens next, but I'm also curious to see how it will be portrayed in the anime.
