Golden Kamuy began serialization in Weekly Young Jump in 2014. It is written by Noda Satoru. What's great about this manga is that it advances the story while introducing the history and culture of the Ainu people. The history, culture, and customs are reported in such detail that you might think the author is Ainu. But did you know that the characters in Golden Kamuy actually have real-life models? Golden Kamuy features a number of eccentric characters. Did you know that many of these eccentrics and weirdos are actually based on historical figures? Some are parodies of names, others mimic the actions of actual murderers, and even imitate actual murder methods. Even famous historical figures like Toshizo Hijikata appear. This diverse array of sources is one of the elements that makes this series so appealing.

While the source material for this series is sometimes faithful to historical fact, there are also many scenes that are strangely comical. Scenes like Ushiyama's sexual desire exploding are comical depictions that deviate slightly from the original characters. The character Anebata is one example of this. While some scenes faithfully recreate the original, the comic also seems to add elements that make the work more enjoyable and easier to read.
