The first season of the TV anime aired from April to June 2018, the second season from October to December 2018, and the third season is scheduled to air from October 2020. The first season of the anime was from volumes 1 to 7, and the second season was from volumes 8 to 14, so the third season is expected to be from volumes 15 to 21. This time, I would like to review the first season before the third season begins. There will be some spoilers, so if you haven't seen it yet, please be careful!

Episode 1: Wenkamuy

Episode 1: Sugimoto
Saichi Sugimoto, who played an active role in the Russo-Japanese War and was praised as a hero, was nicknamed "Invincible Sugimoto". After leaving the unit, Sugimoto spent his days collecting gold in Hokkaido in hopes of making a fortune. There, he met a man. The man told Sugimoto that someone had stolen the Ainu treasure. The person who stole the treasure was incarcerated in Abashiri Prison and tattooed the prisoners in the same cell. The tattoo is said to be a clue to the buried treasure. It was a story that was hard to believe at first, but when his life was put in danger after he learned the truth, the story became more real.

Episode 2: Nopperabo

Episode 2: Sugimoto and Shiraishi
Sugimoto and Asirpa head to Otaru, Hokkaido's largest commercial city, in search of clues to the buried treasure. They didn't get much useful information, but on the way back, they succeeded in trapping one of the escaped prisoners who followed them. Sugimoto and his friends tied the man up with rope and questioned him. He explains that a prisoner named "Nopperabo" was the one who stole the buried treasure, and that the prisoners started killing each other to steal the tattoos. While talking about the buried treasure, the man is suddenly killed by a long-range shot. Sugimoto and Asirpa are shaken by the appearance of a new enemy. The man who fired the long-range shot was a soldier from the 7th Army Division, known as the strongest in Hokkaido. Sugimoto and Asirpa escape by laying a smoke screen. Sugimoto catches the soldier one-on-one, but he takes advantage of a momentary gap and escapes. The next day, another prisoner is caught in the trap he had set. The prisoner's name is Shiraishi. While they are trying to get information out of him, a rabbit appears and they decide to catch it. Due to bad weather, Sugimoto and Shiraishi lose their footing and fall into the water. To keep themselves warm, the two make a deal and somehow escape. From then on, Shiraishi joins them.

First time eating hinna, hinna

Asirpa eating hinna
Sugimoto and Asirpa end up eating at Asirpa's hunting lodge. This is the first time chitatap appears, and at this time, they are making chitatap from a squirrel caught in a trap. Chitatap is an Ainu dish made by pounding with a blade and grinding it into meat. Asirpa, who likes brains, recommends it to Sugimoto, but at this time, Sugimoto is not very keen on it because he is not used to eating it yet.

Episode 3 Kamui Mosi

Episode 3 Asirpa
Going into the forest, Sugimoto and Asirpa discover a cave that brown bears use to hibernate. In front of the cave, Sugimoto is fascinated by Asirpa's knowledge of brown bears, but then he notices the light of Asirpa's binoculars pointed at them. Soldiers from the 7th Army Division are approaching Sugimoto and his friends. Sensing danger, the two rush to escape, but the distance between them and the people on skis is getting closer and closer. Sugimoto splits into two groups to try to let Asirpa escape, but she is caught by Tanigaki. At that moment, Retara attacks Tanigaki and Asirpa is saved. Sugimoto is also caught by another soldier, but he enters a brown bear's den and is saved when the mother bear attacks the soldier.

Miso is... Osoma?!

Miso is Osoma
Sugimoto and Asirpa eat rabbit chitatap hotpot. Sugimoto, thinking that miso would go well with the light, non-greasy taste, tries to put some miso he has in the chitatap. Asirpa, who has no idea what miso is, mistakes it for osoma (poop) from its appearance and looks at Sugimoto with disdain. Sugimoto denies that it is osoma and offers it to her, saying it is delicious, but Asirpa stubbornly refuses to eat it. For a while afterwards, she genuinely thinks that Sugimoto is a weirdo for eating osoma. However, from the middle of the story onwards, Asirpa also becomes addicted to miso.

Episode 4: Death

Episode 4: Sugimoto and Asirpa
Asirpa invites Sugimoto to the village where she was born and raised. Welcomed by the villagers, Sugimoto spends a peaceful time enjoying Ainu cuisine and playing with the children. Meanwhile, Sugimoto hears from Asirpa's uncle about Asirpa and Retara's relationship and how Asirpa lost her smile after being separated from her father and Retara. Although Asirpa acts like an adult, she is still a child... Her uncle says that she probably enjoys being in the mountains with Sugimoto. After his talk with his uncle, Sugimoto was left alone to think. Worried about Asirpa's safety, he left the village alone while she was sleeping. While gathering information on tattooed human skins, Sugimoto heard that the daughter of a shop owner had been attacked by a tattooed prisoner, and headed to the shop in question. Sensing danger, Sugimoto tried to run away by lashing out, as the shop owner was in cahoots with the 7th Division, but was caught in the process.

Episode 5: Running

Episode 5: Hijikata and Kadokura
Sugimoto, who is viciously beaten by the Nikaido brothers, somehow manages to get out of the pinch by shouting loudly so the other soldiers can hear. Asirpa, who was left alone, has Retara smell Sugimoto's socks to track him down. When she arrives at the source of the smell, she finds not Sugimoto... but Shiraishi. Shiraishi had mistakenly been wearing Sugimoto's socks when he drowned in the river. Asirpa thought she had no clues to Sugimoto, but Shiraishi had information that Sugimoto had been captured. Wanting to help Sugimoto, Asirpa decided to ask Shiraishi for help by sharing the buried treasure. Shiraishi, who is also known as the king of prison escapes, easily infiltrates the building and meets up with Sugimoto. However, the horse notices Retarra's scent and starts making a fuss, and at that moment the Nikaido brothers return to the room. Sugimoto and Nikaido stab each other and are seriously injured, and are taken to the hospital. Lieutenant Tsurumi, who saw Nikaido's body, felt something was wrong and carefully inspected the scene. Sugimoto had dug out Nikaido's intestines and acted as if he had been stabbed. Sugimoto, who pretended to be injured, was put into a carriage, which he then hijacked and escaped with Asirpa. Lieutenant Tsurumi, who immediately followed them, decided to let Sugimoto go, thinking that it would be more efficient to have Sugimoto collect the tattooed human skin.

It is not an enemy that can be easily defeated, but that is why the two, who are true matagi hunters, are passionate about defeating the wolf Retara. Tanigaki, carrying Asirpa, injures his leg with a hunting trap and is unable to move. Nihei makes Tanigaki wait there and goes to settle things with Retara, using Asirpa as bait. Retara appears just as Nihei had planned, and attacks Nihei with a gun in hand like lightning. Nihei's plan is to cut the flesh to break the bone, so he makes Retara bite his arm, trying to shoot her while she is distracted... but he is bitten from behind. There was a female wolf who had become part of Retara's family. Nihei loses his life, saying that a female would have no interest in a fight between men.

In contrast to Asirpa, Shiraishi thinks that if she is so accurate, she could also be good at horse racing, so she takes Inkarma to the race track and plans to win the bet by fortune telling. Sugimoto and Asirpa appear in front of Shiraishi, who is in top form and has won the bet. While they try to stop him, Kiroranke decides to ride a horse and participate?!
