In the story of The Wise Man's Grandson, villains called demons appear. Simply put, the story revolves around a battle between demons and humans, but demons vary greatly. Some are incredibly strong, while others are easily defeated. So, in this article, I'd like to introduce you to what demons really are.
The First Appearance of a Demon

The first appearance of a demon is in a flashback scene with the wise man Merlin and his mentor Merida. For the first time in the Kingdom of Earlshide, people are transformed into monsters, attacking villages and towns. This is the first time this has happened, and the entire country is thrown into panic. A subjugation force was sent out, but was completely wiped out. Then Merlin and Merida arrived. The two of them took the lead and, after a fierce battle, they finally managed to defeat the demon. Diseum, who was the crown prince at the time, had his life saved by them, and he would occasionally come to visit them.

Due to Oliver Strom's scheme, Kurt was transformed into a demon. Amazingly, Oliver managed to turn Kurt into a demon while still retaining his sanity. The exact cause of his transformation into a demon has yet to be revealed, but it's likely hatred. According to Merlin, being transformed into a demon occurs when a living being fails to control its magical powers and goes violent, turning into a monster. In Kurt's case, Oliver's research led to him being intentionally transformed into a demon. It seems that people with strong wills retain their will even after being transformed into demons. A distinctive feature of demons is that their eyes turn red, which is how they are distinguished, but Oliver was blindfolded, so although he was a demon, he was able to live in the kingdom without being noticed.

However, it seems that the abilities one possesses before becoming a demon have a significant impact, so weak humans don't seem to become as powerful. However, it's extremely difficult to determine how strong a weak human will become once they transform into a demon. That's because, although the Swedes Kingdom's soldiers were completely defeated, they were also completely defeated by the Ultimate Magicians, and no one has appeared who is an equal match, so it's hard to understand.

Although a former imperial nobleman, he was a beloved lord who aspired to create a country like the Earlshide Kingdom. However, his wife, Aria, was killed by his subjects due to a plot by a nobleman from another empire who hated him. Feeling anger towards the nobles and commoners, he transformed into a demon and wished to destroy all the towns and villages in the empire. He now possesses powers on a par with Shin's, and is the only demon who knows how to turn others into demons. As other demons have struggled to turn animals into demons, it seems that this probably requires a great deal of skill and ability. Originally, he worked as a teacher in the Earlshide Kingdom, hiding the fact that he was a demon.

Zest

Originally a commoner in the Imperial Army, he hated the ways of the Imperial nobility and accepted Oliver's offer to turn him into a demon. Originally, he was only supposed to accept the offer to become a demon alone, but due to the trust he had from his subordinates at the time, they all became demons as well. He acts as something of a strategist, and appears to be quite skilled. Zest is also behind the plotting of the battle with the Ultimate Magicians. It will be exciting to see when they face off directly.
Milia

Milia appears to be in love with Oliver Striem. The experiment Zest is referring to is likely about having a child with him. Although she appears to truly love Oliver and is experimenting with having a child with him, she looks a little sad when Oliver says that the first stage of the experiment was a success. It's not yet clear how Millia became a demon.

Among the demons, Oliver Strom has lost his purpose after destroying the empire. The new demons have grown tired of Oliver and are starting to say they want to do things their own way. Lawrence is currently working with Zest on his orders to keep track of their movements and steer the ship. Lawrence was Zest's subordinate even before he became a demon, and is quite intimidated by Shin's strength, so he is probably not as strong as Shin.

The Ultimate Magicians are constantly fighting the demon army. The main force of this demon army is made up of Zest's former subordinates. Dante, who fought Aug, was also originally one of Zest's subordinates. His strength was also abnormal, and he was stronger than Aug at the time. Zest's subordinates were also originally commoners, but they became disgusted with the methods of the imperial nobles and turned into demons with the goal of destroying the empire.
