The third episode of the anime The Wise Man's Grandchild has been released. It's a Narou-style work, and having read the original manga, I was a little disappointed with how light it was. How should I put it, it felt like drinking diluted beer with no smooth texture. The part that made me laugh the most this time was the depiction of Kurt before he transformed into his demon form. The mysterious way his mouth moved at high speed. This expression was somehow too new for me. It's true that I've seen depictions of eyes trembling when someone is upset or undergoing some kind of change, but this is the first time I've seen a mouth opening and closing at high speed. What's good about episode 3 of The Wise Man's Grandchild is that the art is still holding up well.
Anime Episode 3: A Brief Summary
Shin, the grandson of the wise man. Because Sicily, the girl he's in love with, is also being targeted by Kurt, they walk to school together every day. Of course, they also walk home together. So, there's a cliched lovey-dovey scene. Let's put aside the fact that the lovey-dovey scenes in The Wise Man's Grandson feel lacking in some way. Is it the art, the movement, or the dialogue? Later, during class, the topic turns to research labs. It's like a club activity, right? So, a proposal is made for the S class to form their own research lab, the Ultimate Magic Research Club. Meanwhile, Kurt's father has him tied up at home for abusing his authority at school. Then, his middle school teacher, Oliver Strom, arrives. Covered by his eyes, he uses some kind of mysterious magic. Then, Kurt suddenly arrives at school. He attacks Shin and the others, rapidly opening and closing his mouth. Shin escapes. Then, a battle between Shin and Kurt begins. At this moment, Kurt transforms into a demon. His eyes turn red. The depiction of his eyes turning red was pretty cool. Just as I was thinking that, Shin pulls out a sword that vibrates at high speed and slices his neck in half. Then, everyone who was supposed to have fled returns, mysteriously revealing they had actually seen him. There's a humorous bit where, standing next to the severed head of a classmate, they realize things are about to get tough. It was a strange episode, with 15-year-olds who'd never defeated a monster making a fuss next to the head of a classmate.
Anime Episode 3: Shin is Too Strong
The theme of Shin being superior to others is evident throughout the series. For some reason, it felt right in the scene where he was discussing whether or not he'd defeated a monster, but overall, it feels like it's becoming a bit of a sloppy, overpowered type of story. He's also overwhelmingly powerful when he defeats the demon-transformed Kurt. He's just too strong, after all. I can understand why Uncle Dis was worried that the balance of power in the country would change. I wish it had a bit more of the exhilarating feeling of Tensura... but it's still interesting, so it's fine.
Key Points of Episode 3
Flirting with Sicily
The typical flirting scenes appear every episode. I personally don't find these scenes particularly appealing, so I think some viewers will stop watching midway through. The story unfolds smoothly, like small waves, but I feel like the romance between these two will take a while to develop. Sicily's cuteness is incredibly strong at key points, though.
Ultimate Magic Research Society
This name was decided upon when a new research group centered around Shin was proposed. It doesn't seem to have been formed yet, but I imagine we'll see more discussions in the clubroom-like setting of this research group in the future. Like in Hyouka.
Episode 3 of the Anime: The End
Anyway, I want to see it all the way to the end! So please, please don't let the art melt away. The magic effects, and the effects of the exploration magic system, are so cool! Please, art! Don't melt away, hold on! I can live with it even if Sicily's uniform suddenly loses its opening at the chest, or the candles aren't three-dimensional!
