Tanya is the strongest mage, but that doesn't mean that other Imperial mages or enemy nation mages are weak.
Today, we'll be introducing mages from nations that are hostile to Tanya's adopted homeland, the Empire!
Mage of the Francois Republic
Biant
An aerial mage of the Republic Army.
Commander of the Special Operations Group's Second Mage Squadron.
An enemy mage who appears frequently throughout the series.
He is on friendly terms with General de Lugo and serves as his aide.
He fought well against the Empire's mages, but after his homeland fell, he continued his resistance in the south as a member of the "Free Republic."
Hosman
A lieutenant and aerial mage in the Republic Army.
He was the commander of the Named Unit, but it was wiped out.
In episode 1, Lieutenant Hosman's unit was forced to play a role similar to that of a defeated character in a Godzilla movie.
Even so, he is one of the few mages who has made a name for himself on the bloody battlefield.
What are Named?
A mage recognized as a formidable foe even by enemy nations.
Shooting down five enemy aerial mages is recognized as an ace, and a unit with six or more aces or a member with 30 or more individual kills is registered.
Hosman's unit is likely the former.
In Tanya's case, she is registered as the "Demon of the Rhine."
Mage of the Legadonia Entente
Anson
A colonel and commander of the Entente's Aerial Mage Battalion.
Towards the end of the Norden Front, the Entente Alliance was short of soldiers, to the point that young people under conscription age were sent to the front lines.
Among them, he was a veteran soldier who had been experiencing combat since before the war began.
He was promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel in recognition of his performance in the battle with Tanya shortly after the war began.
In episode 7, he is seriously injured, but is rescued by the Allied fleet.
In episode 11, he launches a joint attack on the Empire with the Allied Kingdom's army and comes into contact with the 203rd Mage Battalion, but is killed in action.
Mage of the United Kingdom of Albion
Drake
Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the United Kingdom's Marine Mage Corps.
He is one of the people who is well aware of Tanya's danger.
Even before the United Kingdom entered the war, he traveled to various front lines to gather information.
In episode 11, together with Anson, who was rescued by the Allied Fleet, they enter into combat with the 203rd Mage Battalion, but are forced to retreat before they have time to retrieve Anson's belongings.
Magicians of the Lucy Federation
The treatment of magicians is significantly worse than in other countries
While the Lucy Federation is only briefly depicted in the final episode of the anime, purges similar to those in the Soviet Union are also taking place in the Lucy Federation.
Federation mages are also on the list of those targeted for purge.
Most are executed or sent to concentration camps.
They are in a situation where they lack enough food to last the next day, let alone training, so their level of training is quite low.
As the country is at war with the Empire, the survivors are released and return to the front lines.
Will the Saga of Tanya the Evil the Movie depict the Eastern Front?
A film adaptation of The Saga of Tanya the Evil has been confirmed for production in 2018.
Since it's a new film rather than a compilation, it's likely to depict events following the final episode.
Since the Empire is also at war with the Federation, the Lucy Federation's mages may also be featured in the film.
Summary
Each nation's magicians have their own unique characteristics.
Their equipment and fighting styles vary considerably.
However, the standards of strength are the same across all nations.
While the enemy magicians are defeated by Tanya, a change of perspective may reveal an interesting side to them.
