The TV anime series "The Reincarnated Sage's Alternate World Life" will finally begin airing in July 2022. While there have been a lot of reincarnation-themed works recently, you might be thinking, "Another reincarnation story?" This work is a bit unusual: instead of taming and fighting powerful monsters, the protagonist teams up with the weakest slimes to defeat dragons and other creatures. Here's a sneak peek at the plot.
Transfer? Reincarnation? A Mysterious Sudden Summoning to Another World
Basically, "reincarnation" stories in alternate worlds refer to the death of a character due to an unexpected accident or illness, followed by rebirth in another world. On the other hand, stories about "transferring" to another world are when a magic circle or something suddenly appears and the person is transported to another world while retaining their appearance and memories. So what is this work about? One day, while working at home, a window suddenly appears on the computer saying "You have been summoned to another world!". If the protagonist ignores it, it is deemed that the person has accepted the request and is summoned to another world. So, I think this is a story about transferring to another world (summoning to another world), but... the title of this work is "The Reincarnated Sage's Life in Another World." Since the title clearly uses the word "reincarnation," does that mean the protagonist is dead at the time of being summoned? And so on... it starts off with a bit of mystery.
Accidentally Taming a Slime
When Yuji is summoned to another world, he thinks, "This is a dream," and immediately plans to die and wake up. He then accidentally gets a nearby slime to ride on his body and kill him, but the slime becomes attached to Yuji, and instead of being killed, it becomes his friend. Furthermore, when he takes the slime into the ruins, he brings along other slimes, and suddenly he has tamed a large group of 80 slimes. The slimes then devour the books in the ruins, and the books they read become Yuji's experiences through the slimes, leading to him obtaining the profession of sage.
Is the first enemy the climax?
Yuji is a budding tamer (sage) who has befriended 80 slimes. Feeling hungry, he opens the door to the ruins...and finds a gigantic dragon. While he'd certainly been hoping to eat some meat, Yuuji is stunned by the high-quality meat. The slimes also panic at the sight of the dragon. Unsure of what to do or what the power of each spell is, Yuuji unleashes the powerful "Flames of Demise." The dragon is reduced to bones. At this point, Yuji wonders if he's really been summoned to another world, but he doesn't even consider returning to his original world, thinking, "It's better than going back to that crappy company." Incidentally, the dragon he defeated at this point was reduced to bones, so there was nothing left to eat.
Registering as an Adventurer in the Town of Fastan
Using the slime, Yuji discovers a nearby town and arrives in the relatively small town of Fastan. There, he decides to register as an adventurer to earn some money. The effects of the "Flames of the End" that Yuji had used earlier were being felt in town, and the villagers seemed to be living in fear, wondering if it was a natural disaster or some great magic beyond human comprehension. When he honestly told the guild what magic he could use, they didn't believe him and treated him like a liar. Still, Yuji somehow managed to take the adventurer exam, demonstrating his extraordinary abilities and passing in a special category given to outstanding individuals, the first time in 15 years, he also gained B-class detective vision, which is essentially the highest rank for a detective. This "B-class detective" ability is highly valued, and it is said that having one in a party reduces the death rate by 1/5.
New Companion: Proud Wolf
The second monster Yuji tamed was a large wolf called the Proud Wolf. Its name and appearance suggested it was formidable, but when Yuji caught it and tried to communicate with it using "Monster Communication"...it was extremely cowardly, crying and begging for its life. The literal translation of its name is "Proud Wolf," but this weak-willed attitude puts not only Yuji but even the slime in awe, so Yuji decides to tame the Proud Wolf, considering it would be a convenient form of transportation. Even after joining the team, the Proud Wolf remains a cowardly wolf, always quick to hide, but it also shows surprising guts, desperately carrying out even dangerous missions when ordered to do so. Since slimes have a slow movement speed, the Proud Wolf is also useful for transporting slimes. Incidentally, the Proud Wolf joins the team in Volume 2 of the manga. While it seemed likely that Yuji would continue to add more allies as a tamer, it wasn't until Volume 8 that he finally tamed another monster to join the team. Until then, no monsters were added to the team.
Save the Weakened Dryad!
Yuji and his friends head into the forest to search for "Dria Flowers" at the request of the guild. However, they find that the flowers are no longer blooming where they once were. This is because the Dryad that makes the flowers bloom is weakened. Guided by a slime, they find the Dryad weakened by the power of a curse. At first, the Dryad is wary of humans because evil humans left a cursed magic stone there. However, Yuji restores the Dryad's magical powers and calms its guard, and it leads them to the location of the cursed magic stone. Using a dispelling spell, Yuji lifted the curse and defeated the hundreds of monsters that emerged from it. He successfully obtained a large amount of Dryad flowers. He successfully completed the request.
A horde of monsters surges in
After bringing back the Dryad flowers, Yuji and his friends were faced with another major incident. At least 10,000 monsters suddenly appeared and began marching toward the city of Fastan. Deciding that there are no other options, the Adventurer's Guild considers evacuating the citizens, but Yuji says he has a plan and asserts that if they can hold out for 15 minutes, they'll be able to do something. While the adventurers are buying time, they deploy slimes and a "Magic Teleportation Barrier" outside the city, after which Yuji fires off two "Ending Flames." He loses consciousness due to the depletion of MP, but when he wakes up, most of the monsters have been wiped out and the adventurers have defeated the remaining ones. Afterwards, Yuji decides to move on to the next city as the "heroes" and "dragon slayers" and other people around him are making a fuss and the situation won't calm down.
Battle with a Mythical Dragon
Yuji accepts a request to locate the Earth Dragon, forming a party of four for the first time since arriving in this world. Along the way, one of the members betrays the others, but Yuuji's abilities help the situation unfold with ease. The three then discover a dragon they've never seen before. They determine it to be a disaster-level threat and return to town to report to the guild. Along the way, they easily defeat an Earth Dragon (one of the most powerful monsters found in ordinary forests) and return to town to report. When they describe the dragon's characteristics, they discover that it resembles a dragon from mythology. Yuji and his slimes set out alone to defeat a mythical dragon said to destroy a continent in three days.
Kethis's Dagger
Yuji began his battle with Delight's Blue Dragon with a preemptive attack using "Extreme Inferno." Despite hitting the dragon's weak spot directly, the attack only caused minor damage. So Yuji pulled out his weapon, the Kethis's Dagger. Kethis's dagger has the effect of concentrating magic at the tip, and Yuji's strategy is to use "Inferno of the End" to maximize the power of the tip of his sword. With the first blow, Yuji pierces the dragon's eye, dealing great damage. However, he is unable to defeat it and is counterattacked. Yuji is in a desperate situation, but at that moment he is able to use a special skill called "Heavenly Strike," and with this blow he knocks the dragon to the ground. Finally, with the dragon on the ground, he hits it with Kethis's dagger, using Inferno of the End. He cuts off the dragon's head and narrowly achieves victory.
"The Reincarnated Sage's Alternate World Life" Summary
So far, I've introduced the plot of "The Reincarnated Sage's Alternate World Life." What did you think? This marks the end of the story, so I think the anime will continue to adapt up to this point... I'm not sure how much of it will be adapted, but I'm looking forward to the anime airing.
