"Komi-san, a Social Disorderly Insult" is a Weekly Shonen Sunday manga that aired as an anime in the fall of 2021, with a second season scheduled to air as early as April 2022. The first season of the anime was incredibly well-made and highly recommended! Anticipation is high for seasons 1 and 2 of Komi-san, so let's take a look at what made the first season so interesting!

Komi-san, a Social Disorderly Insult: What Kind of Work is It?

Komi-san Cover

Komi-san, a Social Disorderly Insult. The story centers around the incredibly beautiful but incredibly bad at communicating with others, Komi-san, also known as Komi Shoko, and the protagonist, Tadano-kun, also known as Tadano Hitoshi, who is average in every way, both in terms of grades and athletic ability. They interact with their various unique classmates and the people around them. It's a heartwarming, everyday school romance comedy.

A legitimate evolution of the original work, while retaining its authenticity!

The original Komi-san, Communication Disorderly ... The anime's excellent pacing is still intact, without being too wordy. Even the somewhat bland parts of the manga are fleshed out and made more interesting. I felt that it paid utmost respect to the original manga while highlighting its strengths with a unique anime approach! I'd go so far as to say that this anime is a proper evolution of the manga!! Fans of the manga will absolutely be satisfied!

The clever use of speech bubbles, onomatopoeia, and narration makes it entertaining!

The Komi-san anime is interspersed with speech bubbles, explanatory text, and narration throughout. This is also the case in the manga. While each episode of the manga features a short story, the pace is incredibly fast, which can leave readers feeling lost. Therefore, the manga overcomes this issue by supplementing the story with speech bubbles and narration. The anime is also easy to understand and comical, thanks to speech bubbles, onomatopoeia, and narration. Without these speech bubbles, I think it would be difficult to follow and the pace would be noticeably slower! This anime has a good pace, but it's not at all hard to follow! It's fast-paced and entertaining! I think this is the kind of comedy anime people want today!

For example, ① A protagonist with a dark past

Tadano-kun's Dark Past

The protagonist, Tadano-kun, tries to stay low-key and avoid causing trouble at high school. This is because he has a dark past from middle school. His dark past is listed one after the other. The speech bubbles are used well, and there are many scenes that will make you laugh out loud!

Example ②: Expressing Yamai's Dark Side

Yamai's Whisper ASMR

Yamai, a cool classmate, is also a yandere who shows a disproportionate love for Komi. Tadano offers to help Komi make friends and goes to Yamai, the center of attention in the class, to ask her to be his friend. However, Tadano, who is overly familiar with Komi, is nothing but an enemy to Yamai. This scene perfectly captures Yamai's dark side.

Example ③: Help!

Komi-san in Trouble

During a discussion to select class representatives, Komi-san is nominated for the position. However, for Komi-san, who has difficulty communicating, becoming class representative was an overwhelming hurdle. Komi-san is socially awkward, so she basically doesn't talk. Perhaps speech bubbles are the only way to explain her feelings.

The parodies and jokes scattered throughout the series have been further improved!!

The original work is quite rich in parodies, but the anime adds hilarious jokes and naturally respects them. If you can relate to any of them, you'll find yourself laughing out loud! Even if they aren't, there are still plenty of scenes that are entertaining just for the atmosphere!

For example, ① Stand user?

Komi-san looks like she's about to have a Stand

A scene where a familiar Dodododo appears. Komi-san's first appearance scene was like this. The font is similar, but that's also the feel of the original work. Komi-san is a social anxiety disorder character, so she often expresses her emotions through onomatopoeia.

For example, ② The culprits?

Tadano-kun is targeted by the culprit

By coincidence, Tadano-kun and Komi-san sit next to each other, which earned them the hatred of most of their classmates. All of those classmates ended up looking like the culprit. Perhaps there's a connection because Detective Conan is also serialized in Sunday.

Example 3: Self-Proclaimed Eternal 17-Year-Old

Eternal 17-Year-Old

Komi's mother is so youthful and beautiful that she could be Komi's older sister, but her personality is the complete opposite of Komi's. She claims to be eternally 17-years-old. Who on earth is the voice actress?!

A comical character that evolves even further from the original!

Smiling Komi-san

The first season of Komi-san, Communication Disorder covers roughly volumes 1 through 5 of the manga. Since the first season covers up to volume 5, each episode is packed with content. Every frame of the manga is carefully recreated, and the careful work is evident when you read the original.

Komi-san's emotional expressions are adorable!!

Komi-san has social anxiety, so she's also not good at expressing her emotions. However, when watching the anime, you can see Komi's emotional changes as she changes from beautiful to deformed to scary. Her transformations are a highlight, and they're both adorable and hilarious. For example, here's Komi-san in action!

Komi-san as an ordinary beauty

Komi-san profile

This is probably how she always appears to those around her. A cool beauty who seems out of reach, but also a little unapproachable.

Komi-san in a state of agitation

Komi-san's face looks scary, but she's just agitated. When she gets nervous, her face becomes even scarier.

Komi-san in a deformed state
