"Hanebado!" is a badminton-themed anime series that began airing in July 2018. After enrolling at Kitakomachi High School, protagonist Ayano Hanesaki and her childhood friend Erena Fujisawa try out for the tennis club. While Ayano and Erena leisurely hit the ball and engaged in a rally, the tennis club members were playing a match nearby. At that moment, a sharp ball comes flying towards Elena, and just before it looks like it's about to hit her, Ayano swiftly hits the ball back. Witnessing this, Tachibana Kentaro, the coach of the Kita Komachi High School badminton club, invites Ayano to join the club, and she later does. This is the famous scene that led to that.

Ayano Hanesaki and Kaoruko Serigaya haven't faced each other since their match in middle school. This is no surprise, as Ayano had drifted away from badminton since her loss to Kaoruko. Unaware of this, Kaoruko joins the badminton club at Kitakomachi High School and challenges Ayano to a match. The two had fought on equal terms in middle school, but Kaoruko has grown even stronger, while Ayano has become weaker. Kaoruko leaves in despair at Ayano's condition. Furthermore, Ayano leaves the gym looking deeply depressed, deciding to quit the badminton club after all. Ayano is so depressed that she skips school the next day, but this match serves as a catalyst for her to return to the world of badminton. It was a disappointing match for Ayano, but it was a memorable scene that was necessary for her growth.

About six months before Ayano Hanesaki entered Kitakomachi High School. At the All Japan Junior Championships, there was a match between Uesaki Ayano and Aragaki Nagisa. The result was a shutout victory for Ayano. Around this time, Ayano's mother had left home after she lost a match against Serigaya Kaoru, and she had lost sight of the meaning of continuing to play badminton. Meanwhile, Nagisa felt as if all her efforts and feelings towards badminton had been denied after losing this match. This match was extremely painful for both of them. However, for Nagisa, this match allowed her to grow one more step, so it could be said to have been a necessary scene.

Fujisawa Erena, who has been watching Ayano from the closest distance, forcibly drags her to the badminton club. There, Erena gently advises her, "If you keep running away, you'll never be able to move forward." At this, Ayano, who had been looking down, suddenly looks up. Unable to break out of her slump, Nagisa Aragaki becomes increasingly stoic, realizing that she needs to put in more effort. Unable to keep up with Nagisa's somewhat out-of-control behavior, several club members quit. Furthermore, Nagisa was frustrated that her hard work was dismissed as talent, when her junior, Ebina Yuu, told her, "Aragaki-senpai is more talented than me," which made her lose her temper. The former club members saw her and told her, "That's the worst, taking your anger out on your juniors." Just when it seemed like the situation was about to explode, one of the former members blurted out, "I was jealous of you... What I was jealous of was that you loved badminton so much," and left. Nagisa, who watched them, seemed to have felt something from those words. This is a memorable scene, in which something changed inside Nagisa.

 

5th Place: Nagisa Aragaki Meets Her Greatest Enemy

Nagisa Aragaki, captain of Kitakomachi High School, has been in a slump since her shutout loss to Ayano Hanesaki, who was a junior high school student at the time, at the All-Japan Junior Championships. Although losing makes Nagisa feel as if all her hard work up to that point has been negated, she refuses to accept it and continues to work hard. She practices every day, determined not to lose the next time she meets Ayano, but when she actually sees her, she becomes intimidated. She then realizes that it was she who wasn't taking badminton seriously, and that she had been blaming others for her inability, and she bursts into tears. This is a classic scene in which Nagisa changes her mind.

Ayano Hanesaki was taken to the badminton club by her childhood friend, Erena Fujisawa. When Ayano says, "There's no point in doing it," coach Tachibana Kentaro responds, "If you have that much talent, you can even aim to be world champion," but she replies, "It's just a sport," and, "And club badminton, for that matter, is meaningless." At that moment, Izumi Riko, vice-captain of Kita Komachi High School's badminton club, blurts out, "It's not meaningless!" and "I tried my best...I wanted to win so badly...it's not meaningless..." The more emotional the usually calm Riko becomes, the stronger her feelings are for badminton and club activities. This is a great scene that shows those passionate feelings.

Kentaro Tachibana, the coach, tries to somehow rescue Nagisa Aragaki, who is in a slump. Kentaro then challenges Nagisa to a match. As the match progresses, Kentaro analyzes why Nagisa is in a slump, and finally discovers the cause. For the first time, Kentaro notices and speaks out about Nagisa's efforts, even though those around her have dismissed her as talented. Thanks to Kentaro's words, Nagisa is able to break out of her slump, and this famous scene marks a major turning point for her.

With school also cancelled, Ayano continues to agonize in the park, where her childhood friend, Erena Fujisawa, visits her. Confused about what to do, Erena begs Nagisa Aragaki, the captain of the badminton club, to play a match with Ayano at the park. Because it's outdoors and the wind is blowing, Ayano struggles to play as she would like. Throughout the match, she begins to reminisce about the joys of badminton she felt as a child.
