This is Sui Ishida's debut work. Set in modern-day Tokyo, the story centers around "ghouls," creatures who have the appearance of humans but survive by eating human flesh. The concept is dark fantasy, but it also has elements of science fantasy. It also has many fans and the anime is highly acclaimed. Here, we will summarize the content that was not mentioned in the anime, the plot, and some thoughts on the story.

Episode 10: Shaking Think

Synopsis

The full extent of Rose's investigation is still unclear, and Haise has introduced the "mask operation" that makes use of the Quinx's characteristics. However, as the investigation progresses, Haise learns of the existence of an "eyepatch-wearing ghoul" who is feared even by other ghouls, and begins investigating "him." Then, in the CCG's archives, he finds a report left behind by Amon Kotaro, a fallen investigator...!? Meanwhile, a new plan concocted by Kijima makes a big breakthrough in Rose's investigation.

Shirazu's Conflict

Hospitalized Shirazu sister

Shirazu became a Quinx to earn money for his sister's medical expenses. He also needs a lot of money to continue his treatment, which is why he seems to be obsessed with money. What made Shirazu worry about Nutcracker was when she said "I want to be beautiful." It was the same thing her sister said after her illness progressed. Shirazu's sister is currently unconscious, so she must have seen Nutcracker and her sister overlap when she said the same thing and passed away.

Getting a pep talk

By visiting Inspector Hayashimura, who defeated Nutcracker with him, and getting a pep talk, Shirazu's conflict finally seemed to have progressed. Judging from Shirazu's actions, it seems likely that he felt guilty for killing the Nutcracker, and was unable to forgive himself for what he had done, which was one of the reasons he was so mentally cornered.

Shirazu's sister's illness

The illness of Shirazu's sister, which is not revealed in the anime, is revealed in the original manga to be "RC cell hypersecretion syndrome". This disease occurs when Rc cells, which give ghouls special abilities, are abnormally produced in the human body. The mysterious protrusion from my sister's right eye is not a medical device, but something like a kagune that is the result of abnormal production of Rc cells.

Rc Cell Abnormal Secretion

It is believed that Rc cell abnormal secretion develops in the following order: abnormal proliferation of Rc cells → kagune-like cells protrude from a part of the body, and it takes time for the proliferation of cells to cause abnormalities in the body. It seems that those with an Rc cell value of over 1000 are required to be detained, so I wonder if there is a way to determine whether they are ghouls or not in a humane way after they are captured.

The reason why the Tsukiyama family was found out to be ghouls

Last time, it was Ariza who became the source of information that led to Rose's relationship with the Tsukiyama family being discovered by the CCG. However, her feelings were so strong that she cried, "I don't want to lose him," so her actions are understandable. Perhaps the reason she confessed to Kijima was because he sweet-talked her, saying, "If you provide the information, I'll save Yuuma's life."

The reason why the Tsukiyama family's power was not used

Surprised Tsukiyama

The Tsukiyama family also has influence in the political and financial world. Even though they were ghouls who harmed humans, the CCG is also a public institution, so if political pressure was applied, the investigation could have been stopped. The reason this did not happen seems to be because the time from obtaining the information to carrying out the operation was so quick.

Similarities between Anteiku and the Tsukiyama family

Tsukiyama and Touka

Anteiku was the base for the ghouls in the 20th ward. Anteiku has the motto of "helping each other," and provides meals to weaker ghouls and hides those who have been targeted by the CCG. Hinami's parents also have strong kagune, but they live quietly as humans. Anteiku has also helped to make such wishes come true. It can be assumed that Kan's mother has been fulfilling the wishes of ghouls to live quietly among humans.

Impressions on Episode 10

Rose Arc: I was surprised at how easily Kan'mo, who was thought to be the final boss for the CCG, was captured. However, behind that, as his son and someone of Gassan blood, he had a strong desire to protect Shu, which made me secretly shed tears. It is clear that sacrifices will be made for Shu, so I would like to see how the head of the family, Gassan Shu, grows in the future.

Episode 11 Missing Persons WritE

Synopsis

Fighting Matsumae
Source: Tokyo Ghoul © Ishida Sui / Shueisha, Tokyo Ghoul:re Production Committee

When the CCG raids the mansion, Tsukiyama, his father, Kanmyo, and the servants surrender. Tsukiyama escapes with his aide Matsumae, thinking of those who risked their lives to keep him alive, and ponders the responsibility of becoming the "head of the family." Haise, a ghoul investigator, stands in front of Tsukiyama. Meanwhile, the Quinx, who have joined Ito Kuramoto's Ito squad in the "Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation," encounter a ghoul called "Noro." Shirazu, who has overcome his doubts against Noro, who has a fearsome regenerative power, fights back with a Quinque created from Nutcracker's kagune, but...!?

The relationship between Tsukiyama Shuu and Matsumae

Kissing the back of the hand shows respect for a superior. It is considered good manners to take the hand of a superior and lower your waist and head below the other person, but since Shu was quite small at the time, it seems difficult to do this while standing. It is usually given by a man to a woman, but it is often simply a greeting to a superior.

Knight of Tsukiyama Shu

It is also a remnant of the chivalry of Middle Europe, so Matsumae is expressing his intention to "I am your knight". In addition, it also had the meaning of a promise, like a pinky swearing, for the two of them.

Farewell to Kaneki

Past from Tsukiyama's point of view

When he thought, "I had fun...", he himself did not know about the plan to exterminate the Tsukiyama family. The reason why she says "it was fun" in the past tense is likely because, after her conversation with Haise, she has come to the realization that she can't get those days back.

Resolve with the Head of the Family

Looking Down on Tsukiyama

"This body no longer belongs to me alone". It seems that he is claiming that he will become the head of the family, shouldering the lives of all those who are currently fighting the CCG. And his father, Kanbo, who continued to carry the weight of those who loved and served the Gassan family. After learning about his father's greatness last time, Akira may have realized that from now on he is also carrying the weight of the lives of those who gather around him.

The apple given to Kanae

Kanae and Eto

At the end of episode 11, from a flashback and a conversation between Eto and Kanae, it was revealed that Kanae is a woman. With this in mind, we will consider what the apple given to Kanae was and Eto's purpose.

The meaning of the apple

Kanae realizes her true feelings
Source: Tokyo Ghoul © Ishida Sui/Shueisha, Tokyo Ghoul:re Production Committee
In the Book of Genesis, the apple is the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. By eating the fruit of knowledge, Adam and Eve realize that they are naked and ashamed, so they cover their bodies. In other words, by eating the apple, Adam and Eve may have become aware of their gender identity. The apple that Eto gave to Kanae was perhaps a way for Kanae, who had lived as a man, to strengthen her gender identity as a woman.

Thoughts on Episode 11

"Tokyo Ghoul:re" will finally reach dawn (the final episode) next week. Battle after battle means that my favorite characters will disappear one after another, which made me very sad. Matsumae in particular was a character I really liked, and I couldn't watch even the battle scenes without crying because I was charmed by the depth of his love for Nobu-sama.

Episode 12 Dawn Beautiful Dream

Synopsis

Noro's appearance scene

As his friends are defeated one by one by Noro, Shirazu stands his ground and fights. Seeing this, Urie desperately stands up. The two of them attack Noro with all their might. Meanwhile, Kanae rushes to Tsukiyama's aid and launches a furious attack, but is critically injured in a counterattack from Haise, who is beginning to regain his memories as "Kaneki." Then Eto, a half-ghoul known as the "One-Eyed Owl," appears and unleashes his malice. Kanae musters the last of her strength, but... And then, Haise finally awakens fully as "Kaneki"...

Will Haise return?

Haise's Deep Psychology
Source: Tokyo Ghoul © Ishida Sui/Shueisha, Tokyo Ghoul:re Production Committee
After winning love, he says, "I want to die coolly." Of course, it is possible that Kaneki's death means that he wishes for physical death, but it can also be interpreted as "the cold-hearted Kaneki sleeps and Haise (or Kaneki) returns." Therefore, the end of their conversation was not "goodbye" (an eternal farewell), but "good night, Haise" (a temporary sleep).

Underground flower field

"White flowers are blooming" and "Arima Kishou appears" are two points that can be mentioned. Judging from the way Arima and young Iri are so close, it's probably a place where Arima appears often. Perhaps it's not related to the CCG, but he visits it privately. And in Kaneki's flashback this time, it was revealed that it is "underground".

Keyword is 24th Ward

It's still a story with a low possibility, but the keywords Tokyo and underground made me think of the theory that it is "24th Ward". 24th Ward is an area created by ghouls that spreads underground in Tokyo, and it is said that many violent ghouls are hiding there. If the "underground flower garden" is really in 24th Ward, then there is a connection between Arima and 24th Ward.

Impressions on Episode 12

I was excited every week to see the detailed story by Ishida Sui and the wonderful work created by the high skills and tireless efforts of the staff. I am also looking forward to the second season of Tokyo Ghoul:re starting in the fall. There are many mysteries left in the first season of ":re", but personally, I am very curious about two things: "Who is the hooded man who saved Saiko (is it Amon?)?" and "Where did Koma-san and Irimi-san go?".

Summary

I felt the growth of the Quinx squad throughout the story. I think the keyword for the Quinx squad is "past". Haise and Urie who are trapped in the past, and Yonebaya and S who have grown from the past are very different.
