This is Sui Ishida's debut work. Set in modern-day Tokyo, it explores the theme of "ghouls," creatures who have the appearance of humans but survive by eating human flesh. While the concept is dark fantasy, it also contains elements of science fantasy.

Kirishishima Kunko in Tokyo Ghoul (√A)
A character appearing in "Tokyo Ghoul."
The heroine of the story. A high school girl in the general education department at Kiyomi High School.
She is voiced by Amamiya Sora in the anime and Shimizu Fumika in the live-action film.
She attends school during the day and works part-time as an Anteiku poster girl after school.
She is a beautiful girl with a slightly shadowy appearance, one eye hidden by her distinctive hairstyle.
She first appears in the story as an Anteiku employee.
She is friendly and polite when serving customers, but her true personality is rough and impulsive.
She is a member of the ghouls, a race that preys on humans.
At first, she treats the protagonist, Kaneki Ken, coldly because he is human, but as she learns of his kindness, her attitude softens and she gradually acts as if she has feelings for him.
She can come across as brusque, but she is kind and considerate to those she considers her friends.
Although he keeps quiet about the fact that he is a ghoul, he considers Yoriko, a human, to be his best friend, and although he knows that her cooking is extremely unpleasant for him as a ghoul and makes him sick, he forces himself to eat it.
His caring nature led him to seek revenge for his younger sister Hinami, whose parents were exterminated, despite his comrades' warnings.
His kagune is a bright red feather kagune. He often receives instruction from Yomo.
His fighting ability is by no means low, as he was able to defeat Tsukiyama, a highly skilled and incompatible kokyo, even with Kaneki's help.
However, because he forces himself to eat Yoriko's home-cooked food, which is harmful to ghouls, he is always unable to perform at his best, and he often struggles against opponents who are often superior to him.
Until four years ago, he and his younger brother Ayato made a name for themselves as the "Kirishima siblings," and were able to fight on equal terms with Tsukiyama Shuu (although the depiction suggests that it was a two-person battle between them).
Her mother was exterminated by the ghoul investigator Arima, and her father, Arata, was captured by Shinohara, leaving her parents behind.
Despite her difficult upbringing, Touka reluctantly went to school with Yoshimura's help, made friends, and enjoyed a contented life as a member of Anteiku. However, Ayato, who dislikes humans, was not happy with his sister's actions and separated from her.
At Yoshimura's request, Touka took care of Kaneki, who had become a half-ghoul, and gradually came to trust him as a senior.
However, one day, she faced off against his younger brother, who had become a senior member of the Aogiri Tree, and his colleague, Yamori, and was defeated by an overwhelming difference in their abilities, losing Kaneki to them.
By this time, she had already come to view Kaneki as family, and felt responsible for his abduction. When she was told that they might never see each other again, her face turned pale and her hands trembled with shock. However, she showed her caring side by saying that she would go and rescue Kaneki, even if it was just by herself.
In order to rescue Kaneki, he invades the enemy's hideout and fights Ayato again.
Due to the difference in strength, he is defeated and unable to do anything, but is rescued by Kaneki and escapes the Aogiri Tree.
Touka wanted her life to continue as usual, but Kaneki announced that he was leaving Anteiku to pursue anti-Aogiri activities.
She wanted to go with Kaneki, but in the end she was unable to bring herself to do so due to his cold words and actions, and they broke up.
At that time, she was living with Hinami, who had lost her mother, but Hinami also ran away from home to accompany Kaneki, leaving her living alone.
Her feelings for Kaneki are gradually turning into affection, and in order to connect with him, she hopes to attend the same university as Kaneki, and is studying hard day and night.
When she toured the campus, she was excited when she saw a poster on the wall, and she treasures the keychain Kaneki gave her.
Incidentally, when she asks Nishiki, "What do you think about keychains as presents?" and he replies, "Keychains are something you give to people you don't care about," she snaps, "I'll kill you."
Then, on the bridge, she reunites with Kaneki for the first time in a long while.
Hearing him worry about whether he should return to Anteiku, she cannot hide her irritation at his self-sacrificing words and actions in his desire to protect everyone, and she dismisses his actions as nothing more than self-indulgence, saying, "He seems to be thinking about others, but he's only thinking about himself," and "There's no way someone who can't protect himself can protect others."
Enraged by his words, which still hide his true feelings, she punches him, saying, "You're never coming back to Anteiku!" and laments how different he has become from before.
She regrets that this has made it even more difficult for Kaneki to return to Anteiku, but ultimately ends up supporting his desire to return.
However, Anteiku becomes a target as part of the CCG's "Operation One-Eyed Owl Extermination."
Learning of the managers' predicament, she longs to help, but is persuaded by Shiho and is unable to join the battle, resulting in the destruction of Anteiku.
And during the battle, Kaneki also goes missing.
Standing in front of the ruins of Anteiku, she makes a decision.
Kaneki is unsure whether to return to Anteiku.
So she decides to create a place for him. Believing in his survival, she vows to continue waiting for his return.
Kirishima Kurika in Tokyo Ghoul:re
Two years after the original series.
She appears as an employee at the cafe ":re."
She is described as Shikata's younger sister (although it is hinted that she may actually be Shikata's niece).
Shikata is often mistaken for the manager, but according to Nishiki, it is Touka who is the manager.
She meets Kaneki (aka Sasaki Haise), who has lost his memory.
She shows a few moments of surprise, but for some reason doesn't intervene and quietly watches over him.
When Haise sees her, he feels that she "smiles a little sadly, as if troubled."
Unlike Kaneki, who cares for Touka as a friend but never behaves in a way that suggests romantic feelings,
Haise comments, "There's someone so beautiful," which could be interpreted as love at first sight.
Since then, she has frequently visited ":re" and has been conscious of Touka.
Quinx members Mutsuki and Shirazu describe her as extremely cute,
and later bumps into Shirazu at the hospital, presumably while visiting someone.
His demeanor remains unchanged, being soft-spoken and polite when dealing with Haise, and he remains the same when it comes to work.
However, it seems he hasn't changed inside.
As expected, he was still as rude as ever to Nishiki and Tsukiyama.
And when Uta asked him if he was still waiting for Kaneki to return, he declared, "Uta-san, I'm just continuing to do what I've decided," with a face that showed no hesitation whatsoever, and that his feelings haven't changed.
And when Tsukiyama criticized him for not trying to restore Kaneki's memories, he criticized Tsukiyama's obsession with restoring Kaneki's memories as being rude to someone who struggled to survive without his memory for two years.
He believes that Kaneki need not choose the painful path of living as a ghoul, and avoids excessive contact, showing that he always respects Kaneki's own wishes.
This is likely why he didn't make any more contact than necessary when they were reunited.
On the other hand, he does seem to want Kaneki to remember him, and he sympathizes with Tsukiyama's actions.
