Volume 14 of Tokyo Ghoul:re was released in January 2018. This volume was full of surprises, as always! There were plenty of new developments and plot twists resolved. The environment surrounding Kaneki is constantly changing. In this article, we'll be sharing spoilers and thoughts on volume 14!
Kaneki Transforms into a Dragon
After devouring Furuta and the Oggai, Kaneki transforms into a dragon. His gigantic form fills the city, destroying it indiscriminately and killing humans. There was no trace of the Kaneki who loved humans and ghouls, just a terrifying sight. There were pages without dialogue for a while, but by having only pictures, the way everyday life was destroyed was expressed in sadly detailed detail.
What are the intentions of Kano, the "root cause of technology"?
Kano's goal was to "apply ghoul research to medical treatment." It was revealed that the Washuu family, the head of the CCG, was actually a clan of ghouls, and that they had been pitting humans against ghouls. In the past, Kano saw great medical potential in ghoul research, but his ideas were not accepted at the time. He killed Rize, who was born a kakuren, created a prototype of Kaneki, and then created a mass-produced version of Kaneki called Oggai, feeding it to Kaneki, turning him into a dragon. He explains that he teamed up with Furuta so that the dragon's appearance would bring it to the public's attention, advance ghoul research, and save many lives. In volume 1, it was Furuta, wearing a clown mask, who dropped a steel beam on Rize. And then he unexpectedly committed suicide. I'm sure I'm not the only one shocked by this! (lol)
Kanou forcibly drew people's attention to ghouls, even going so far as to turn himself into a criminal, in order to apply ghoul research to medical treatment. Kano wasn't an absolute evil, so it's a shame he died here.
Scarecrow's True Identity is Hide
We finally learned Scarecrow's true identity! He is unable to speak and was seen rowing a boat in the Rushima Arc. His true identity is Hide, a friend from Kaneki's human days who was thought to have been consumed by Kaneki in the final episode of the original series. Thanks to CCG technology, Hide has been able to speak through the power of a machine (?). Even after he regained his ability to speak, his mouth remains covered by a mask, so his appearance remains a mystery.
After consuming a large number of kakuhou, Kaneki transformed into a dragon. It turns out that this dragon's true form is a kagune. Apparently, Kaneki's real body is somewhere within this gigantic form! Hide asks Touka, "Do you want to go dig for Kaneki?!" This frankness is so typical of Hide! It feels like he's back! (lol)
Ghouls and CCG team up!
Amon and Akira join the ghouls thanks to Hide, and they head to the CCG. In order to unite with the CCG, the ghouls remove their masks in front of the investigators. Even though they risk losing their lives if their true identities are revealed, this is motivated by their desire to save the king, even at the risk of losing their lives. That's so cool...!
There's a lot of opposition from the CCG. No, in fact, it seems like there's zero support. Juzo also disagrees, saying, "I think Shinohara would be against it." However, Special Class Marute, who knows Shinohara well, tells him, "You decide what to do for yourself. You're an adult now." Those words convinced Juzo to fight alongside the ghouls. Juzo's willingness to accept the offer made all the investigators decide. I never thought they'd join forces so easily! Juzo's power is incredible! (lol)
Let's dig up Kaneki!
Kaneki is somewhere within the giant body. However, with no sign of any kind, humans and ghouls work together to find a solution. I was already crying at this point (lol). Humans and ghouls are working together... The irony is that the world Kaneki has always strived for is being realized by him becoming the final boss.
Touka suddenly remembers the wedding ring Kaneki always wears around his neck. She is able to find Kaneki with a metal detector! Searching with the metal detector in hand, Touka finally gets a response. Suddenly, Mutsumi appears in front of Touka.
Disregarding orders?! What are Mutsumi's plans?
Miza protects Touka from an attack aimed at her. However, she is severely wounded by Mutsuki. Touka asks why he is getting in the way now that the ghouls and the CCG have aligned their positions. Mutsuki's answer was, "If that person doesn't belong to anyone, that's fine," and she attacked the silent Ryu. From this line, Mutsuki knows that Kaneki will never belong to her, and at the very least, she doesn't want him to belong to anyone... or so I'm interpreting it as such. (lol) With that in mind, Mutsuki becomes enraged when Touka calls Kaneki "husband," and tries to kill her. Then, Quinx Squad, led by Urie, appears. Urie and Saiko confront Mutsuki after letting Touka escape. At least Urie had feelings for Mutsuki in the past, but he didn't show any signs of it and, as a squad leader, stopped Mutsuki. Urie is one of those people who has grown a lot since the beginning...!
Quinx vs. Quinx Battle
Finally, it's Mutsuki vs. Urie Saiko!
Mutsuki displays a hideous kagune, a stark contrast to the beautiful one Touka showed earlier. "I don't know... even if it means dying," she says to her comrade Urie, clearly intent on killing him. Where did the adorable Mutsuki go when she first appeared? (LOL) At this point, Urie recalls hearing from Shiba-sensei about the Quinx Squad members' RC cell levels. At the time, Mutsuki's level wasn't listed, and it was thought to be higher than Urie's. Mutsuki's level, as discovered this time, was 3. This means she has complete control over her RC cells. By controlling her RC cells, she can produce false levels. Even Kaneki, the One-Eyed King, couldn't do that, so just how close is Mutsuki to becoming a ghoul? Perhaps her RC levels are higher than those of ghouls?
The Mystery of June's RC Value
However, I had a question about June's value. Even if June's value was abnormally high, wouldn't 3 be too low if it were possible to produce a false value? If you don't want to reveal the abnormal value, I would set it to the same as the other squad members. So, does the number 3 have any significance? If you look into the relationship between the numbers that frequently appear in Tokyo Ghoul and the tarot, you'll see that in the upright position, '3' represents love, passion, and prosperity, while in the reversed position it signifies vanity, jealousy, emotionality, and emotional instability. No, isn't this totally June...?
Her love for Kaneki, and the jealousy towards Touka that arises from that. It's no wonder that Sui Ishida has such meaning in numbers!
Summary
What did you think? This time, my expectations were pleasantly exceeded. With each volume, June's psychopathic side is definitely growing stronger. I wonder what kind of person she'll be in the next volume? Personally, I hope they avoid any further hurt among themselves... ,
Scarecrow, now known as Hide, makes a reappearance in volume 14! We've been waiting for this! It was a pleasant surprise for fans that he appeared without makeup, rather than in his usual scarecrow-like appearance! We're also curious about the CCG technology hidden under Hide's mask. Tokyo Ghoul is still unpredictable. How will Kaneki and the environment around him change? This is a must-read! We can't wait to see how Tokyo Ghoul develops in the future!
