Tokyo Ghoul is a series where a never-ending battle between ghouls and humans unfolds.
But one thing that's also noteworthy is the love lives of the characters.
Today, we'll be introducing characters who are officially considered couples, as well as characters who we hope are somehow related!
The First Official Couple: Nishiki x Kimi
Nishiki and Kimi were the first couple to appear in Tokyo Ghoul.
And what's more, they were a unique pairing: a human and a ghoul. They met in college when Nishiki returned the change Kimi had left in a vending machine. What a shoujo manga-esque encounter!
Initially, Nishiki kept Kimi by his side as a backup in case something happened. However, when Nishiki was near death and tried to eat Kimi, Kimi urged Nishiki to eat her so that he could survive. It was wonderful to see this love that transcends racial differences. Nishiki and Kimi are separated during the battle to defeat the Owl, but Kimi volunteers to be Kanou's assistant and become a ghoul researcher in order to create a world where Nishiki, a ghoul, and herself, a human, can live together. Now they have been reunited and have just taken Kaneki's hand in order to save him, so I hope they continue to be happy...
"Amon x Akira": Living Together Beyond Their Species
Akira Mado is Amon's partner and the partner of the fallen Mado Kureo. She is also Kureo's daughter. During their time as an investigator, Amon had trouble with Akira's independent attitude, but when he saw Akira crying over his late father, he resolved to protect him, and when Akira was unable to bear the news of Amon's death during the Owl extermination battle, he burst into tears, suggesting that they had feelings for each other that went beyond that of a superior and subordinate.
In :re, when Amon and his fellow student Takizawa, whom he thought were dead, appeared before him as ghouls, Akira was shaken and protected them, an uncharacteristic move, even though they were targets for extermination. As a result, Akira was unable to return to the CCG as an investigator and ended up going on the run with Amon. Now, the two are working together with ghouls and investigators to connect ghouls and the CCG in order to save Kaneki, who has turned into a dragon.
Is there a possibility that they are more than just friends?! "Uta x Itori"
Uta is a mask artist who runs a bar called "Hysy," while Itori also runs a bar called Helter Skelter. It's known that the two of them and Yomo have known each other since their time in District 4. Uta and Itori have known each other since before Yomo arrived in District 4.
In the past, when Uta was assassinating investigators, he used Itori, clad in his underwear, as a decoy. After the murders, Itori had one of his ghoul subordinates cover him with his jacket, but his subordinates were bleeding from the nose. Uta, however, acted unconcerned. It's hard to imagine Uta getting a nosebleed from seeing a woman in her underwear. (lol) Itori also showed no embarrassment when he stripped down to his underwear in front of Uta. It was as if they were used to seeing each other. Itori wouldn't have agreed to the underwear operation unless there was some kind of relationship between the two. And from Itori's tone, "Why, Lord Itori...", it's clear that Uta was the one who came up with the underwear operation.
Furthermore, in the final episode of Tokyo Ghoul, we learn that both Uta and Itori are members of the Clowns.
It's unclear whether they're still together, but it's likely they were romantically involved.
These two are the best! "Kaneki x Touka"
These two met in the first volume of Tokyo Ghoul and have survived life-threatening situations together. In :re, they finally get married! And life is growing inside Touka's belly. What a joyous occasion... When they first met, they couldn't even lie about it, and Touka treated Kaneki, a former human, coldly, which scared Kaneki away. Kaneki deliberately distanced himself from her, not wanting to involve her in his battles, and Touka watched over Kaneki from afar as he lost his memory and became a ghoul investigator. They had always cared about each other, so this outcome was only natural. Kaneki, now an investigator, had lost his memories of his time as a ghoul and visited the cafe run by Yomo and Touka with his subordinates. Despite having lost his memory, Kaneki shed tears. He apparently visited the cafe several times afterwards by himself. He looked at Touka while pretending to read a book, suggesting he had come to see her. How romantic! They shared their feelings, became united, and a new life grew in Touka's womb. But the problem was that Kaneki was once human. For the baby to be born safely, it needed to receive the nutrients a human baby needs (which ghouls cannot eat). Touka is currently asking Nishiki and Kaneki to ingest human food and attempt a miracle. We hope that the baby will be born safely and without incident...
Split Story: "Yakuza x Nico"
Attracted to Yamori, a transvestite has taken refuge in Aogiri. His true identity is that of a ghoul belonging to Pierrot. Yamori, who enjoys torturing his prey, pierces Nico's abdomen whenever he's about to kill it. Nico seems to have admired him for that, too. When Yamori tried to kill his ghoul father in front of his children, he firmly declared, "That's the worst," showing that the two have an equal, not hierarchical, relationship. And in the bonus manga at the end of the volume, Yamori confides in Nico about his troubles. There's no doubt they made a great pair (lol).
Summary
What did you think? Tokyo Ghoul is known for its beautiful portrayal of love and friendship in a world where death is always close at hand. I hope you enjoy Tokyo Ghoul from this perspective as well.
