Sui Ishida's debut work. Set in modern-day Tokyo, the story centers around "ghouls," creatures who have human form but survive by eating human flesh. The concept is dark fantasy, but it also contains elements of science fantasy.

Eto's Overview

A character from Tokyo Ghoul. A small female ghoul who is one of the leaders of the Aogiri Tree. He usually wears bandages all over his body, a robe over it, and a floral scarf around his neck.

His true nature is the worst!?

He has a very keen insight, but generally uses it to relentlessly dig into the hearts of others and play with them like toys, and he hides a vicious true nature that enjoys mocking them. He describes those who are straightforward and full of a sense of justice as "that's why it's interesting to see them break," and he destroys the lives of several humans and ghouls as if they were children playing with toys.

Power that comes at a price

When Eto's bones (kagune) are implanted in the body or consumed, they have the power to dramatically increase the power of a ghoul (kagune power, regenerative power), but for those who have them implanted in their bodies, lines in the story such as "What you need is an apple, the power that will cost you your life" and "You're going to die soon" suggest that in return for a huge leap in power in a short period of time, it comes at the cost of one's life.

She's usually childish!?

She also says that she likes the Book of Genesis, and the god she worships is not an omniscient and omnipotent father, but a child with incredible power. When mocking others, she often uses words like "Anyo ga jōzu" and "Kukusu ketaketa" along with a fake laugh.

His secret activities in the anime "Tokyo Ghoul"

After divert the CCG to the 11th district, he and Tatara's main force attacked the ghoul detention center in the 23rd district. Six months later, he appeared in Kano's underground laboratory and cut Banjo's ribs without him noticing, who had been toying with the Yasuku sisters. During the Owl wipeout battle, he wipes out the investigators, and during a fight with Arima Kishou, he swallows the fake One-Eyed Owl and takes it back to the Aogiri Tree to provide it to Kano as a kakuhou donor.

Appears in the Auction Arc. He orders Ayato to dispose of the floppy disk and releases Shirataki into the world. He is aware of Ayato's feelings for Hinami and laughs at him, saying, "How sad." (It seems that he has already read that Ayato's first love will end in heartbreak)

Eto's brainwashing

In the Rose arc, he sets his sights on the seriously injured Kanae and gives him his own bone to strengthen his brainwashing. During the Tsukiyama clan subjugation, he appeared with Noro at the Luna Eclipse Building and sent Kanae to Tsukiyama. However, when Kanae was defeated by the rampaging Sasaki, he suddenly attacked the three.

Sasaki Haise (Ken Kaneki) VS Eto

Eto licks Kaneki's eyes

After crashing the commander's helicopter to support Sasaki and tormenting him, he urges Kanae to take Tsukiyama and takes a bystander position. After that, he confronts Sasaki, who has regained his memories, which is his original form. He attacks him, but is completely helpless and is shot through the entire body by Sasaki's kagune. However, even though her innards were pierced, she vomited blood, and her whole body was covered in blood, she still had a smile on her face. As she broke off speaking, she pulled his head to her and licked his eyeball with her bloody tongue, causing him to reveal his eye.

The veil of the secret is finally revealed!

She is a half-human, half-ghoul born to a human and a half-ghoul. Yoshimura is the manager of Anteiku and is her real father. Her real name is Yoshimura Eto (Aishi), and her name contains the wish that "a lot of love will support this child." Furthermore, he is the only SSS-rated monster to appear in the story, and is said to be the strongest ghoul along with Shachi.

Eto's Parents

Her father, Yoshimura, left her in the care of an acquaintance from Ward 24, Noroi (later known as Aogiri executive Noro), when she was a baby to keep her from getting into any danger, so she only knew about her parents from her mother's diary that Yoshimura left behind, and grew up without knowing their faces. After that, through some kind of circumstances, she began to hate the world, and at the age of 14, she attacked CCG investigation bureaus all over the country, killing many ghoul investigators.

Through several attacks, he killed many investigators, including Mado Akira's mother and Urie's father, causing great damage, but was mortally wounded by the later special investigator Kuroiwa and fell into a corner, but with his own incredible regenerative powers and the help of his father, who was disguised as him, he barely managed to survive and disappeared after that.

What is Eto's true identity?

Realizing the limitations of the individual through defeat, he founded Aogiri Tree at an unknown time in order to gain the power of the organization, and acts with Tatara and Noroi as the mysterious executive Eto, with his entire body covered in bandages. At the same time, she wrote her own novels and built up her identity as the popular novelist Izumi Takatsuki.

A Very Few Secrets

Only a few members of Aogiri know that Eto is the One-Eyed Owl, and he hides his identity from his subordinates. The CCG higher-ups have also not figured out that Eto is the Aogiri executive, but because of his great power, they are investigating the One-Eyed King, who is the de facto leader of Aogiri, as the One-Eyed Owl.

The truth remains in the dark...

However, her father, Yoshimura, is skeptical, saying "It would be different if he was the king" (there is also a theory that she is the queen), and Nico, who knows the inside story of Aogiri, says "There's no such person," but later confirms that Eto is the One-Eyed King, saying to Kaneki, "Maybe the bandaged child is the king," and her true intentions have not been revealed. Given Tatara's subsequent words and Eto's own actions, such as "the king will be happy," the equation that One-Eyed Owl = One-Eyed King is beginning to no longer hold true, and the truth is still unclear.

Even while working as Takatsuki Sen...

Eto's real face

The inner side born from a twisted background is also reflected in the novels of Takatsuki Sen, which is her public face, and there is a common thread that the protagonist or important person in all works other than short stories always dies. A person who noticed this analyzed that inside her, "there is unidentified sadness, anger, emptiness, and dark feelings, she has no hopes for anything, she despairs of everything, and she has a strong destructive urge against everything."

Distorted personality

She speaks words of thought for her comrades who died in the operation, such as "How many of our comrades in the 11th district died? ... 200... Then let's do our best to kill them for those 200 people," and lines such as "Shiono won't waste it" show that she is grateful to her long-time manager Shiono as a benefactor, and even after her identity was discovered, she was insulted, and her body was cut, she began to have a friendly attitude towards Kaneki, who she likes as a person like her, even though there are some ambiguities. She shows a complex side that is not just cruel.

Tell Kaneki the truth

It turns out that when he was injured in the past, he met Arima Kishou and told him that he wanted to "fix the distorted world" and cooperated with him to establish the Aogiri Tree. After being mortally wounded at Cochlea and learning of Arima's death, she tells Kaneki the truth: "You are free to sit on or destroy the throne that she and Arima built together." (It is unknown whether she is alive or dead after that.)

What was the reason behind Eto's activities as Takatsuki Izumi?

Books written by Izumi Takatsuki

At first, it may have been just a way to earn a little money, but Izumi Takatsuki's book will eventually have a big meaning. Izumi Takatsuki confesses that he is a ghoul at a press conference for his final work, "King's Beleigue."

The Effect of the Book

This led to the work being picked up by many ghouls, and further led to Takatsuki Sen's fans and ghoul advocacy groups calling for ghoul rights. Takatsuki Sen was a famous author with many fans, so her words had influence. Furthermore, in the final work, "King's Beleigue," she portrayed the Washuu family as sympathizers of the ghouls, fueling suspicion of Washuu. Furthermore, it made the ghouls wish for the "One-Eyed King" to appear.

A revenge drama through books

This created a scenario in which the "One-Eyed King" defeats Washuu. If it actually happens, the world will probably be happy that it's exactly as it is in the novel, and there will be fewer people who criticize. If Washuu is gone, the way CCG exists will change, and it may even disappear. This is what Eto means by "remaking the world into a mess" and his revenge on Washuu.

Summary

Eto is a character who is scary but cute in appearance. There is also a lot of mystery surrounding Eto, which I think is exactly what the work "Tokyo Ghoul" is about. Keep an eye on Eto's actions in the future!
