The anime adaptation of "Oshi ga Budokan Ittekuretara Shinu" (If My Idol Goes to Budokan, I'll Die), abbreviated as "Oshi Budou," is finally approaching with a January 2020 release! It's a completely new type of story, with the female protagonist literally donating money to an underground idol until she dies. Here's a quick rundown of the story! We'll cover everything from the protagonist's eccentric behavior to her geeky remarks that will shock everyone around her. We'll also cover the idols' serious side.
The main character is Eripyo, a female otaku who loves underground idols!
First, let's introduce the main characters of the story. This work is a story about idols and otaku who support underground idols, and the main character, an otaku named "Eripyo" also known as "Eri," is surprisingly young at 20 years old. Eripyo is an avid fan of Maina, a member of the underground idol group "cham jam," and spends all of her daily income on Maina's CDs (and handshake tickets).
Handshake Event with "Cham Jam"
One of the highlights of this series is the handshake event between idols and fans. This scene appears frequently, and Eripyo always buys up all of Maina's CDs (handshake tickets) and monopolizes Maina for long periods of time... but as you can see, Maina's attitude is cold. Frustrated by the cold response she receives despite all the money she spends supporting her, Eripyo shows up again today with a stack of handshake tickets in hand to shake hands and chat with Maina.
Maina's attitude is divine!
Maina is cold towards Eripyo, but she smiles at other fans and is described by fellow otaku as having a divine attitude. In fact, Maina holds Eripyo in a special place, and because of this, she gets nervous when they meet and can't speak properly, making things awkward, which is why Eripyo perceives her as being cold.
The Three Musketeers of Otaku Who Hang Out with Eripyo!
The main character, an otaku, is Eripyo, but there are other fellow otaku who often hang out together. One is Kumasa, a longtime fan who has been an even longer fan than Eripyo. The other is Motoi, who only recently became a fan. The three of them seem to have no common ground other than being otaku, but they are a close-knit trio who are almost always together. Incidentally, regular otaku are put off by Eripyo's enthusiasm and keep their distance.
The feared event!? "Cham Jam" Popularity Vote Now Open!
While looking at the October event schedule, Eripyo's eyes were immediately drawn to the words "Popularity Vote Now Open." Upon seeing this, she couldn't help but yell out, "Don't do that!" That's because Eripyo is the only one who supports Maina... (Everyone is afraid of her and stays away from her), so it's obvious that she'll come last in a popularity vote. Eripyo quickly shifted her focus and cheerfully gave up on Maina's hopes of a high ranking, asking, "Is there a penalty game for the last place?"
Maina comes in third in the interim results!? But the price is too high...
In the first interim results of the popularity poll, Maina defied all expectations and ranked third. Of course, that ranking was due to Eripyo buying tons of CDs and voting for Maina. Eripyo worked multiple part-time jobs to earn money and push Maina up to third place, but one day she was hit by a car while working part-time and broke a bone. Her injuries took a month to heal. Eripyo ran out of money and could only buy one CD at a time. Even so, they try to make a comeback for Maina, whose rankings are falling on the final day...
Full of Danger!? "Cham Jam" Autumn Sports Day
The Autumn Sports Day was announced and held around the same time as the popularity vote. This event is a fairly standard sports day, held the previous year as well, but for some reason, it's also a grueling one, with serious injuries occurring every time. Incidentally, at the last sports day, leader Leo suffered a tragic injury, breaking both legs... And at this sports day, a member also suffered a serious injury, requiring both legs to be in casts.
Cham Jam is participating in an idol festival. Many rivals are also appearing.
The idol festival will be held in Okayama. Naturally, the Okayama-born idol group, cham jam, will also be participating. However, they will be joined by a number of quirky members, including Maple♡Doll, a group from Hiroshima that includes former members of Leo's previous group, and Stellaites, a group from Kagawa that includes Maki's cousin. They will be faced with a stark difference in popularity at the venue as they take on the festival.
A Mysterious Combination! An Exciting Camping Tournament!
Following the Autumn Sports Day, the "Exciting Camping Tournament" event with "cham jam" was held. The members were separated into seven groups, but Eripyo and her three friends were assigned to a group different from their favorite members. Eripyo was in the Aya group, Kumasa was in the Maina group, and Motoi was in the Yuka group. Each member interacted differently with members different from their usual favorite members.
[cham jam]'s Tokyo Debut and the Otakus
Cham jam is aiming for their major debut, and they've finally left Okayama and headed to Tokyo! However, this information has never been made public, and Eripyo and her friends only found out two hours before the event. It's about a three-and-a-half-hour Shinkansen ride from Okayama to Tokyo... Forced to make a difficult decision, Eripyo gives up on the opening night and takes a whirlwind overnight bus to Tokyo to see the next day's performance.
A fatal mistake! Cham Jam mistakes the Budokan for the Budokan
The Budokan is the title of this film. Cham Jam came to Tokyo to catch a glimpse of the Budokan they're all aiming for, and headed there alone. They finally arrived... but it turns out they ended up at the Tokyo Budokan, not the Nippon Budokan they were aiming for. Incidentally, Eripyo and her friends also went to the Budokan on the same day, but they made it to the Nippon Budokan.
Oshibudou Plot Summary
So far, we've given you a rough summary of the plot. What do you think? This work's highlights are the hard work of underground idols and the drive of their passionate fans! It's not just the comedy scenes that are entertaining, but the story itself, too, so please look forward to the anime adaptation!
