Hinamatsuri is a work written by Otake Masao and has been serialized in Harta since 2010. It was long-awaitedly adapted into an anime in April 2018. It is a sci-fi comedy that depicts the hectic daily lives of an intellectual yakuza and a psychic girl who suddenly appears in his house one day, and is sometimes tearful. In this article, we will be looking at "lock-john," a phrase that appears in Hinamatsuri and was thought to be a one-off joke.
First, a quick introduction to Hinamatsuri
One day, while the intellectual yakuza Nitta was at home auctioning and browsing his hobby pots, a mysterious object fell on his head. Inside the object was a mysterious girl. Thinking it was a mistake, Nitta left it for a day, but by morning the object hadn't disappeared. He resolved to speak to the girl and free her from the mysterious suit. It turns out she has psychic powers, and they end up living together. And so begins a hectic life for Nitta, Hina, and many others.
What is Lock-John?
After a series of events, including Anzu's bravery in the Rock + Illusion incident, Nitta criticizes Hina, who is temporarily disowned by Nitta. Hina, however, further angers Nitta. Rock-John began when Hina met a band called "Central Park."
What is CENTRAL PARK?
This band met Hina while she was disowned. They fell in love with her psychic powers at first sight, and began performing Rock-John, a style that combined rock and illusion, on the streets, quickly becoming famous. Even after Hina left the band, he continued to work hard, traveling to the US to study illusions in order to perfect his rock-rock style, but he was never able to go beyond the realm of magic and the band broke up. Vocalist Atsushi plays a very important role in what we'll introduce later.
Atsushi in Search of Rock-John
In search of Rock-John, Atsushi travels to China to meet Mao, a young girl who practices qigong. He learns her techniques, including Chojin Kempo, and later returns to Japan with her. In the midst of all this, a rift developed between Atsushi, who was pursuing the illusion, and the other members, leading to the band's disbandment. Atsushi regrets that all he wanted to do was play rock music, but then a boy appears before him, boasting that he can make Atsushi's dream come true.
About Mao
A psychic sent as an assassin from the future, Mao is acquainted with Hina and Anzu. Perhaps he was sent to the wrong place, but ended up on a deserted island in Southeast Asia, then traveled to China where he was picked up by a martial artist practicing Chinese martial arts, and after demonstrating his psychic powers in the form of Qigong, he became a poster boy for Chojin Kempo. He later succeeded in coming to Japan, where Hina and the others live, as the Japanese branch of Chojin Kempo. He later met Hitomi, and with her advice, he opened Chojin Fitness, becoming a huge success. He's quite a pathetic kid, always talking to dolls that stand in for Hina and Anzu.
The Identity of the Mysterious Boy Who Appeared Before Atsushi
The boy who said he could make Atsushi's dream come true was a psychic sent from the future by government order. His name was Haru, and he said he had come to the past to perform Lock-John. Three months before his appearance in the story, Haru was picked up by a gangster named Tsuda and lived with him.
Haru's Purpose
Haru gathers Hina, Anzu, Mao, Hitomi, Nitta, and Atsushi and begins to explain that he has come from the future to perform Rock-John. Hitomi wonders what the future and Lock-John are all about, but the story continues and she learns that in the future where Haru was, terrible things are happening because of Lock-John.
In the future, 40 years from now
Atsushi learns that he has formed the Chojinkai, an organization that creates psychics for the purpose of performing Rock-John. This organization is the very same one that created Hina and the others, and they were all created so that Atsushi could perform Rock-John. Among them, Hina was the masterpiece, but she went out of control and destroyed an entire city, which led to a civil war between the government and the Chojin Society. Atsushi tried to stop the plan because he didn't want to cause trouble for people, but he was restrained by the other researchers and later arrested as a terrorist.
The First Work of the Chojinkai
The first to be created was Mao. It's a complicated story, as she was a clone of Mao, created by extracting DNA from the saliva of a living Mao. However, Mao's creation marked the first step in developing psychics. Research continued, eventually leading to the creation of Anzu and Hina.
Hitomi's Involvement
Hitomi's superhuman fitness club has become a global hit in the future, but Atsushi, who has always been with her, dreams of becoming a superhuman himself, never acquires any superpowers. So Atsushi collects Mao's saliva and forms the Superhuman Society to create psychics, but the scientists at that time were members who had been found and dispatched by Hitomi's company, so he was indirectly involved in the establishment of the organization without knowing the details. Incidentally, in the future he is known as Chairman Mishima and has become a hero who put an end to the civil war.
And Haru Goes to the Present
The point is that Atsushi's desire to perform Lock-John will cause him trouble in the future, so Haru wants to perform Lock-John before that happens, so she wants to satisfy Atsushi for the time being. However, since it's too much trouble, Haru came from the future to keep everyone who might be involved with Lock-John away from Atsushi. Without Mao, we couldn't get the saliva, and without Hitomi, we couldn't send researchers.
But Atsushi still won't change.
After hearing all this, do you still want Rock-John? When asked, Atsushi started babbling about how rock music was originally meant to rebel against the world, and asked everyone for help. Naturally, everyone quickly avoided getting involved (lol).
Rock-John Summary!
The Rock-John incident has become quite complicated, both in the past and the future. I wonder if the author had planned from the beginning that Rock-John was the full extent of the mysterious organization. That throwaway Rock-John (lol)? If Hina hadn't taught Atsushi about Rock-John, wouldn't we have Hina and Anzu? That would be sad, and since it's a manga, I'll just say Atsushi did a good job. (lol) I can't take my eyes off how Atsushi will deal with Rock-John in the future.
