Wataten!, originally written by Nanatsu Mukugi, is a four-panel comic that has been serialized in Ichijinsha's Comic Yuri Hime since 2017. It's a slightly yuri, slapstick comedy about the everyday lives of a reclusive female college student and elementary school girls. The long-awaited anime adaptation, produced by Doga Kobo, the studio behind Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun and Himouto! Umaru-chan, began airing in January 2018, and has become a hot topic! Here, we'll be introducing a ranking of the best scenes from Wataten!
Wataten! A Brief Synopsis
One day in May, just two months into her university life, the protagonist, Miyako Hoshino, a reclusive and gloomy college student, was lazing around as usual when her fifth-grade sister, Hinata Hoshino, came home. Hinata had brought a friend with her, a beautiful young girl with straight black hair named Shirasaki Hana. The moment she saw the young girl, Miyako was overcome with a feeling she had never experienced before. It was at that very moment that she realized, "An angel had descended upon me." After meeting this girl, Miyako tries every trick in the book to become friends with Hana, but Hana is wary of her, and a hectic daily life begins, involving her younger sister Hinata and her friends.
Famous Scene #10: Mya-nee Finally...
Our #10 favorite scene comes from the troubling scene in Episode 4 of the anime! Mya-nee, who was always on the verge of arrest, is finally caught by the state! (lol) While he was taking photos of a young girl (Hana-chan) in a yukata from the shadows, he was spotted by the authorities! His inherently suspicious behavior and sloppy conversational skills only made him seem more suspicious! Fortunately, Hinata and the others helped him out, and he somehow avoided arrest, but afterwards he burst into tears, saying, "I'm scared outside..." (lol)
Famous Scene #9: It's Mya-nee's fault
Famous Scene #9 is a hilarious scene from episode 3 of the anime! Hana-chan is always being told and doing some disgusting things by Mya-nee, but she always endures it for the sake of sweets and only treats her with a little contempt and coldness, but finally, she can no longer endure it and delivers an angry blow! (lol) She lightly slaps Mya-nee. However, Hana also seemed remorseful, saying, "Oh, I messed up," and Mya-nee seemed happy about being criticized, so she's safe (lol).
Famous Scene #8: The Beginning of Friendship
This scene from episode 5 of the anime is truly a memorable one. It tells the story of Natsune, the reliable and capable girl, and Koyori, who has a somewhat troublesome personality. At first glance, they seem like an unlikely pair, but they're incredibly close, and Natsune trusts Koyori completely. The reason they're so close is because Koyori risked her life to retrieve Natsune's balloon in kindergarten. It was a heartwarming scene that showed their friendship still thriving to this day.
Famous Scene #7: Serious Love Distance
The seventh-place favorite is a thrilling, enviable scene from episode 2 of the anime! Everyone ends up playing hide-and-seek inside the house, and reluctantly, Mya-nee joins in. Meanwhile, Hana-chan, the angel that is, appears to Mya-nee, who is hiding in the closet. While Mya-nee is excited to be left alone in a closed room with her unintentionally, Hana-chan is drawn to the sweet smell of candy that she senses from Mya-nee and clings to her. That's great, let's do more! But it was too much for Mya-nee, so she broke the sliding door to escape, only to be found by the demon (her mother), resulting in a beautiful ending (lol).
Famous Scene #6: Smiles Are the Best
This is another truly memorable scene from Episode 2 of the anime. They hold a sort of competition to take the cutest photos of Noa-chan, but no one is motivated, and Noa-chan becomes depressed over the way she's been treated. That's when handsome Hinata steps in! They decided to praise Noa and cheer her up, so Hinata picked her up...physically! Carrying her like a princess! (lol) I thought she might be a bit skeptical, but Noa was surprisingly happy with Hinata's princess carry. Mya-nee didn't miss the moment and took a photo of Noa's sweetest, heartfelt smile.
Famous Scene #5: Hana's First Love
Our fifth-place favorite scene is a great one from the first episode of the anime! When Hana comes to stay the night, Mya-nee is so excited that she makes lots of sweets for her and feeds her. Well, I thought it was just the same as usual, but then I thought about it, it was a sleepover. Mya-nee's mother gets mad at her for letting her eat so many sweets before dinner, and she's sentenced to being hung up for three hours. Hana, feeling guilty about it, apologizes and ends up sleeping with her. Naturally, Hana isn't at fault, so Mya-nee changes the question and asks, "Did the sweets taste good?" To which Hana replies with a big smile, "Yes, they were." That alone makes hanging up for three hours worth it! (lol)
Famous Scene #4: Surprise Attacks Are Dangerous!
The fourth place scene hasn't appeared in the anime yet, but it's a scene from Volume 3, Chapter 29 of the manga! Hana-chan comes to stay over, but after watching a scary movie, she can't sleep or go to the bathroom, so she turns to Mya-nee for help. That alone is enough to make Mya-nee nervous, but then she mentions later in the conversation that she's lonely as an only child. At this point, Mya-nee jokingly said, "You can think of me as your big sister." Naturally, I expected her to respond coldly, as always, but she unexpectedly replied, "Stay by my side until I fall asleep... Miyako-nee." This surprise attack left Mya-nee unable to sleep (lol). She's truly an angel.
Famous Scene #3: Sisters are the Best
The third most memorable scene of all time comes from episode 3 of the anime! Hinata loves her big sister Mya and is always clinging to her, but when did they become such good friends? It turns out they were close from the very day she was born. Hinata is super cute, crawling around with her and always clinging to her big sister Mya since she was a baby. It turns out that Hinata's love for her big sister Mya has remained the same to this day, and it was a heartwarming scene that made me realize how great it is to have sisters. Unrelated, but Mya-nee is probably around 7 years old at this point, but she still looks cheerful and cute as a child (lol).
Famous Scene #2: The Best Birthday
Second place goes to episode 7 of the anime! This is also a truly memorable scene. It's Mya-nee's birthday, and despite all the troubles, everyone decides to celebrate by making a cake. Meanwhile, Hana, who wasn't part of the cake-making team, goes out for a bit, and when she comes back, she gives Mya-nee a hairpin as a birthday present. Hana-chan is usually cold, but it was a wonderful scene because you could see that she was truly grateful in her heart. The subsequent eyecatch of everyone celebrating and Mya-nee wearing the hairpin were truly amazing.
Famous Scene #1: The Gradually Closing Distance Between Them
Personally, this scene is undoubtedly my number one favorite scene. I'm hoping that this scene will be featured in the anime's final episode, and it's from volume 4, chapter 36 of the manga. This is the scene where Mya-nee sincerely thanks Hana-chan and her classmates for all their hard work on the class play. Mya-nee is usually a bit creepy, but when it comes to something she loves (Hana-chan), she works incredibly hard. The lines in the image are what Hana-chan said when she saw Mya-nee like that. It's so unfair that she's like that every once in a while... (sobs)
Best Scenes Ranking!
What did you think? I chose these scenes based on whether they were personally moving or made me laugh out loud, so there may be some bias, but I think they're all great scenes. There are many more, but I've tried to avoid overlapping with the famous quotes ranking, so if you think "that scene is missing!", I'd be happy if you also took a look at the famous quotes ranking. Of course, there are many more great scenes, so be sure to check out WataTen in the anime or the original manga.
