The anime that's garnering the most attention of the fall 2019 season is "No Guns Life," which we'll be introducing today. With a unique worldview and a strange protagonist, it's a cyberpunk work that's rare these days. In this article, we'll delve into the Extends that appear in "No Guns Life." To understand the world of "No Guns Life," first master these keywords!
What are Extends?
Cyborg
Extenders are people who have undergone a new technology called "body function augmentation technology" to partially or entirely extend their body. This technology grants people who have lost an arm or leg due to illness or injury unprecedented powers. Simply put, they are cyborgs. In this world, they are treated like separate creatures, able to hear distant sounds and possessing extremely strong legs.
Beruehren Corporation
Beruehren Corporation, our enemy, is the developer of "body function augmentation technology." Volume 9 of the manga is currently available, but the company grew rapidly after creating augmented beings as a military reinforcement for the still-mysterious "Great War." The protagonist must confront this large corporation in order to save a certain boy. This episode is full of seemingly evil organizations (lol).
Discrimination
Crimes involving extension technology are on the rise, and discrimination against Extenders exists due to the fear of losing bodily functions. Many people dislike Extenders, and there's even an anti-extension technology terrorist group called Spitzbergen. Perhaps this world is one in which people need Extenders, but are also afraid of them.
Introducing the Main Extends
From here on, we'll introduce the main Extends appearing in the first season of the anime. Please note that spoilers will be included.
Juzo Inui
Juzo Inui is the protagonist of this work and an Extend. He's incredibly muscular and quite large. His head is a gun, and of course he can fire it, but he hates being touched by people. He's a heavy smoker, a nostalgic sight in today's world, but he still looks cool when he smokes. His facial expression is obscured because of the gun on his head, but he can be shy, and at times his cheeks turn red and he's sweating (lol). His fighting style is bare-knuckle.
Arahabaki Tetsuro
Arahabaki Tetsuro is the boy who sparked Juzo's conflict with Veruehren. He's actually the son of Veruehren's CEO, Arahabaki Soichiro. She was forcibly implanted with a "Harmonie" (described below), had the tendons in her limbs repeatedly cut to increase compatibility, and her vocal cords crushed, forcing her to become an Extend and becoming a subject for human experimentation. Her encounter with Juzo and her story begins when she escapes and seeks help from him.
Karen
This is Karen, the fake sister who retrieved Tetsuro in the first episode of the anime. She is an Extend and an employee of Veruehren Corporation. A visual augmenter with expanded pupils, she can pinpoint and snipe her target even in smoky conditions. Her natural sniping abilities are also impressive, and she even managed to recapture Tetsuro Arata from Juzo Inui. Karen's arrival reveals the dark side of Veruehren Corporation.
Ende
Ende is the slum-going augmenter who appears in episode 4 of the anime. Ende is a girl who was forcibly turned into an augmented by Veruehren Corporation as part of an experiment. Although she once hated and mourned her appearance, she found peace of mind thanks to her friend, Anne. However, he was awakened by the drug and became a runaway Extender, but thanks to Juzo Inui, he survived. His beloved Ann died during the attack, but thanks to Mary Steinberg's treatment, he was able to live with new extension technology. I hope he can live a more free and happy life from now on.
Extender Technician
Doctor
Even the slightest mistake can cause malfunctions and out-of-control behavior in Extenders. Their bodies can move independently of their will, and in the worst cases, they can even kill someone. Augmentation technicians are like doctors exclusively for augmenters. Mary Steinberg, Juzo Inui's collaborator, is also an augmentation technician. She's a top-notch specialist, able to instantly resolve any issues.
Illegal Augmentation
Augmentation technology requires a fair amount of money. In fact, many citizens, unable to spare the money, end up receiving illegal augmentations from the mafia and other organizations. This can cause malfunctions, which can cause the augmented body to move against its will. These malfunctions are more like spasms than rampages. If you're going to use augmentation technology, it's important to hire a qualified technician. It seems there are a lot of people out there with nefarious plans.
What are the Extends who use Harmonie?
What is Harmonie?
The remote control device for the augmented body implanted in Tetsuro Arata's throat is called "Hamniel." To improve his compatibility with Harmonie, Tetsuro Arata's vocal cords were destroyed. Arata Tetsuro activates the Harmonie by opening his mouth wide and making a headache-inducing sound. This allows him to take over the body of the person he is using. Arata Tetsuro himself is immobile due to the severed tendons in his limbs, so he often uses it when he wants to move or speak. Its original purpose is thought to be military, but it is unclear.
Damaged
The benefits of using Harmonie are that you can move freely, rather than relying on your own immobile body. You can speak. You can become that person (through acting). Imagine that you're inside Arata Tetsuro, even with his voice intact. However, they do not gain increased combat abilities or the ability to understand the thoughts of the possessed. They remain Tetsuro Arata's body. Furthermore, their bodies are like empty shells, devoid of their souls, and they must be carried around with them. This makes them ideal targets, making them their greatest weakness. In episode 4, they were seen carrying them in a basket.
