"We Never Learn" (or "FuriFura") is a teen romance comedy featuring two heroines and two protagonists. It's written by Io Sakisaka, known for other hugely popular shojo manga such as "Ao Haru Ride" and "Strobe Edge," and is set to be adapted into both an anime and a live-action film in 2020! In this article, we'll introduce some of the heartbreaking scenes from "FuriFura" that will bring you to tears.
① Rio's Unexpressed Feelings
In middle school, Rio fell in love at first sight with Akari, a new transfer student. He'd always loved her, and the day he finally called her over to confess his feelings, Rio learned that they would become step-siblings. Rio tells this story while sheltering from the rain with Yuna.
Yuna, who has a crush on Rio, can't help but ask, "Rio, do you still love Akari?" Rio's expression as he answered, "I don't know," was one of pure sadness...
② Yuna's Confession, Knowing She'll Reject Him
After Rio tells Yuna about his feelings for Akari, he advises her to confess, saying, "If it's someone you can tell her about, you should." Yuna had decided not to tell Rio, knowing she would be rejected if she did. However, after hearing Rio's secret feelings, Yuna also decides to confess to Rio.
And then, to her surprise, she confesses right there! However, Yuna adds, "So you dumped me." She wants to be a friend who Rio can talk to when he's going through a tough time... It's so heartbreaking to tell someone she likes this at the same time as confessing her feelings.
③ "You can forget about it!" Akari's bravado
Akari confessed her feelings to Kazuomi at the summer festival, but he rejected her... In reality, she hadn't fully come to terms with her feelings yet, but in her desire to avoid any awkwardness between them, she says, "You can forget about it if you want! I'm fine with that."
Although Akari had always been confident in her ability to bounce back from heartbreak, after telling Kazuomi about this, she realized, "For the first time, I was afraid of falling in love." And as she left Kazuomi, Akari couldn't stop crying...
④ "Forget this too," Kazuomi kisses her.
After being rejected by Kazuomi at the summer festival, Akari over-emphasized her recovery. However, Kazuomi only rejected Rio's confession because he knew he liked Akari, and he hadn't yet fully processed his feelings.
Then, Kazuomi notices a call from Akari's ex-boyfriend, Ryosuke, on her phone, even though she seems perfectly fine... Seeing this, Kazuomi feels a deep sense of unease, and with his mind completely blank, he kisses Akari. "Forget this too," he says... It's rare to see such a heartbreaking kiss!
⑤ Akari's resolve to leave...
Despite her dream of becoming an interpreter, Akari's father is transferred to the United States, but she doesn't want to be separated from Kazuomi and intends to remain in Japan. However, Kazuomi doesn't want to be a hindrance to Akari's dreams, so he even asks, "Shall we break up?" Hearing this, Akari goes home crying.
However, Akari also realizes that this is not Kazuomi's true feelings. The next day, Akari decides to reveal all of her current feelings to Kazuomi. At the observation deck where the two of them have fond memories, Akari tearfully tells Kazuomi that although she wants to be by his side, she is going to America because she truly loves him. This scene is one of the most tear-jerking in all of Furifura!
