The Death Office, not a city hall, exists on the border between this world and the next. This is a story about people who have died for various reasons and come to the Death Office to look back on their lives while going through the procedures for their death. Some of the stories are touching and tear-jerking, while others are really scary and scary, featuring the dark side of society and real psychopaths. I've picked out some of the scariest episodes!

Scary Episode 1: "Article 5: I don't want to work"

I don't want to work 1

Nobuyuki Egashira was a very self-centered person who would immediately lash out if he was dissatisfied. Finding work too much of a bother, and looking for an easy way to earn money, Egoshi thought, "If I get the death penalty, I won't have to work." But the death penalty isn't good enough; if I get the death penalty, I'll have to kill a lot of people. So who should I kill? Children, who have a future. It'll be easy to run over a lot of people with my car, so I'll just keep doing it. How many people can I kill? And then a horrific crime occurs. The precious lives of five children are taken, and many are injured. Egoshi is sentenced to death, and the sentence is carried out six years after the incident.

When Egashira arrived at the Death Office, nothing had changed in a bad way. He had no remorse, and didn't even feel guilty about what he had done. There is a regulation that requires those sentenced to death to work at the Death Office, but he lashes out, saying, "Why do I have to work when I'm dead? Why do I have to work when I sacrificed the lives of five people?" Egashira declines to become an employee and chooses to go to the "path to the underworld." Even Shimura, as expected, spat out "scum" at Egashira, and Egashira will wander in pitch darkness forever.

This is what's scary!

This criminal was not troubled or depressed, nor did he want to leave a message like many terrorists. He killed children without hesitation for the selfish reason that he would be able to live an easy life if he was executed, and because it just seemed fun. He is a monster born of the darkness of the modern world, and he never reflected on his actions even during the six years leading up to his execution. I don't think this kind of person exists in real life, but there may be people who are dissatisfied with their lives and get desperate, causing their car to go out of control...It's something that should never happen, and it's just too scary.

Scary Episode 2: "Article 27: Tebasaki"

Tebasaki 1

Sayo Yamanaka, an office lady with a reputation for being beautiful within the company, was constantly sexually harassed by her superiors because of her beauty. Her colleagues around her say that it's inevitable to a certain extent because she's also beautiful, but for Sayo, it's not something she can accept and she was dissatisfied. However, Sayo had a colleague she could confide in. The presence of a friend who was at her own pace but wasn't swayed by those around her and could speak her mind was a big thing for Sayo.

The friend who loved chicken wings was a reliable presence, but Sayo felt something unusual in the gaze that the friend gave to Sayo. Sayo began to think that the friend might be homosexual. However, when Sayo was invited to the friend's house, she was suddenly stabbed in the back with a knife and died. The friend was a sadistic murderer who desperately wanted to know how bones are connected and the structure of the human body.

This is scary!

What would you do if your irreplaceable friend was homosexual? I thought this episode was about sexual minorities, but it was wrong! Homosexuality would have been better! The friend's favorite food was chicken wings because he was interested in how the bones were connected, and it was a story about a bizarre murder that could not be controlled by chicken wings. The friend had a blank expression throughout, and did not change his expression even after killing Sayo. It was too scary.

Scary Episode 3: "Article 30: Protection Society"

Protection Society 1

Terai Shuto, a fourth-year university student, had a strong sense of self-denial and felt a complex about his excellent younger brother. He had doubts about whether a university student from a low-ranking university would have a job, and he had no motivation to look for a job. Meanwhile, his grandmother invited him to a lecture by a religious corporation called "Kago no Kai." At first, he thought it was just a shady cult, but Shuuto thought that even someone like him might be accepted, and he began to become interested in Kago no Kai.

They are kind to everyone, and they accept him even though he is like this. Shuuto, who felt comfortable with such kindness, gradually became devoted to Kago no Kai. He eventually becomes a follower of Kago no Kai and lives a self-sufficient life with other followers who have cut off ties with the secular world. His peaceful life healed Shuto, but one day, his younger brother, who knew about Shuto's current situation, came to Kago no Kai and tried to take Shuto back. From the perspective of his family, Shuto's words and actions were nothing but brainwashing. Shuto's younger brother tried to take him out by force, but Shuto found an opportunity to escape from his family. However, Shuto was so devoted to religion that he felt that even the existence of traffic lights and traffic rules were unnecessary and decided by society, so he ran out into the intersection without seeing his surroundings and was hit by a car and died.

This is scary!

For people who are tired of life, have inferiority complexes, and have strong self-denial, a community where no one denies them is not a bad thing. However, cutting off information from the outside world and implanting their own new common sense would have to be called brainwashing. What is most scary is the fact that they are living happy days. Even though he was brainwashed, Shuto was happy. That's why it's scary that we can't call them all evil. But it's unbearable for the family, and there are people whose lives have been ruined by this religion. The protagonist of this work, Shimura, and the Kago-no-Kai have a deep connection, which is the biggest foreshadowing of this work.

【Death Office】Summary of scary episodes

Death Office is a work that deals with human death, so of course it's full of stories about people dying. Since death is involved, there are naturally scary episodes. There are other scary episodes besides the ones introduced this time, but I think it's up to each person to decide which ones they find scary. Death Office also deals with social issues such as abuse, depression, anorexia, and dementia care, and I think some of them may apply to me. It's scary to think that one day I might become like this. But that's also what makes it interesting.
