"D4DJ" is a media mix that includes DJ-themed games, anime, and live performances. The D4 in the title stands for the four Ds: Dig, Delight, Direct, and Drive. The first series of the anime aired in 2020, and the second series is set to air in January 2023, attracting attention. By the way, do you remember the six units that appear in the series? For those of you who have forgotten, let's review them before watching the second series!
Happy Around!
The unit that the main character, Rinku Aimoto, belongs to, and their nickname is "Happy All." All members are first-year high school students. The unit name comes from a catchphrase that Rinku used to say. Initially, the unit name was a combination of all the members' names, but it was changed because it was too long. As the name suggests, their performance is characterized by drawing in the people around them and making the audience and the space feel happy.
Peaky P-key
A unit of Rinku and friends who attend the same high school and are in the same grade, their abbreviation is "Pikipiki." They formed when they were in junior high school, and have been extremely popular ever since their formation, with all of their members being talented. In particular, their leader, Kyoko Yamate, is a charismatic presence. Kyoko grew up in a musical family and was born with natural talent, but she never stops working hard. She is good friends with Rinku and is interested in the charm of her performance, which makes the audience smile.
Photon Maiden
This unit was produced by a person who used to belong to a famous DJ unit. DJ Izumo Sakihime is a first-year high school student, but all other members are second-year students. The unit is made up of four people selected from auditions across the country, and musically it is a fairly serious unit. Sakihime has the ability of "synesthesia," which allows her to see colors in music, and she uses this ability to liven up the floor. Another feature is that many of the lyrics are in English.
Merm4id
This unit is made up of four university students. It was formed with Rika Seto as the center, with the theme of "Southern Island Resort DJ Unit". The unit's name comes from the four mermaids, and the number 4 is replaced with the letter "A". Unlike high school students, they are characterized by their open and mature performance. Rika's good luck and human charm are also indispensable to the activities of this unit.
Rinbukyoku (Rond)
Like Merm4id, this unit was formed by four university students. Although the name is pronounced Rondo, it is written as "Rinbukyoku" instead of "Rondo". What makes them very different from other DJ units is that their music has elements of rock. Not only DJing but also guitar is used in their performances, and their songs are characterized by alternative and loud songs. They are an attractive unit with a performance that greatly changes the concept of DJing.
Lyrical Lily
This unit was formed by high school girls who attend a high school known as a school for rich girls. They are commonly known as "Lili Lily". Their DJ activities began when the members happened to find analog DJ equipment on campus. As it is a school for rich girls, they were initially unsure about DJing due to the strict school culture. However, they were eventually allowed to participate in club activities and began to work in earnest. Their elegant and mysterious performances are their charm.
Summary of units that appear in the work
I've reviewed all 6 units that appear in the work. Each member has their own unique atmosphere and musicality, and they have a charm that can't be lumped together as a DJ performance. Some units have not appeared much in the anime version yet, so I hope they will have more appearances in the second series! That's all for now. Thank you for reading.
