"Yo-kai Watch" is hugely popular among children, and features a variety of charming and cute yokai. Among them, the guardian lion-dog yokai "Koma-san" is especially popular among women. In this article, we'll introduce 10 charms of "Koma-san"!
Koma-san's Charm 1: Above all, he's cute!
Koma-san's charm is undoubtedly his overwhelmingly cute appearance! His pure white body, red spirals, light blue eyebrows and belly, droopy eyes, and furoshiki (cloth) are indescribably cute. He has captured the hearts of women who love "yuru-chara" (cute mascots). Cute "Koma-san" merchandise like plush toys and key chains are popular, but he's also a popular addition to mothers' "chara bento" (character bento) boxes.
Koma-san's Charm #2: His Loose and Delicate Dialect!
Speaking of Koma-san, his dialect is also quite distinctive. Koma-san, who is set to have moved from the countryside to the city, speaks in a dialect using expressions such as "zura" and "monge." Incidentally, the dialect "zura" is used in the Tokai region, including Shinshu, the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, and Yamanashi Prefecture. It is used at the end of sentences and means "desu," "masu," or "da yo." "Mongee" is a dialect from Okayama Prefecture and means "amazing." In the anime, Koma-san also uses expressions such as "Mongee! I'm so surprised, zura!"
Koma-san's Charm 3: He has a different-colored younger brother, Komajiro!
Koma-san has a different-colored younger brother, Komajiro! He has the same face as Koma-san, but his coloring is different. Like Koma-san, he uses dialects like "~zura," but his personality is a little different. Unlike Koma-san, who is flustered in the unfamiliar city, Koma-san shows just how well he has adapted to life in the city, easily passing through ticket gates and escalators and even mastering using a smartphone! He's also started hanging out with some slightly frivolous friends and even become a DJ! There have been many different anecdotes, but he's a great little brother who watches over the clumsy Koma-san.
Koma-san's Charm ④: He was originally a guardian dog!?
Before coming to the city, Koma-san was possessed by a guardian lion dog at a rural shrine. He envied the soft-serve ice cream the children had at the shrine's festival and wanted to try it. Then, one day, the shrine was scheduled for demolition. Koma-san missed his train and ended up in the city, but he decided to live there because he found an all-you-can-eat soft serve ice cream at a hamburger shop called "Mogu Mogu Burger."
Koma-san's Charm 5: His Favorite Food: Soft Serve Ice Cream!
When you think of Koma-san, you think of soft serve ice cream! It's his favorite food. Koma-san, who has come to Tokyo from the countryside, finds Mogu Mogu Burger, an all-you-can-eat soft-serve ice cream shop. Because he is invisible to normal humans, he can eat as much soft-serve ice cream as he wants. He was spotted by Keita while eating each customer's soft-serve ice cream. He seems to have stopped after being told off, but he still loves soft-serve ice cream. It's really cute to see Koma-san eating it with such gusto.
Koma-san's charm point ⑥: He can transform into a human!?
Koma-san sometimes wears a leaf on his head. This is when he disguises himself as a human! Normal humans who aren't wearing a Yo-kai Watch cannot see the yo-kai. Koma-san and Komajiro wear leaves on their heads when interacting with people, disguising themselves as young men.
This is what the human version of Koma-san looks like!
His droopy eyes, curly cheeks, and hair that vaguely resembles ears are still distinctive features. He's still cute even as a human.
Komasan's Charm ⑦: A Heartbreaking Love Story with a Human Girl...
Komasan has a heartbreaking love story. He falls in love with a human girl he always sees at a cafe. He worries about her melancholy expression and tries the unfamiliar coffee at the cafe. But she actually has her own worries. It's a lovely, slightly touching story about an encounter with a human girl. Koma-san's charm 8: He's also keen to do parody material!
Yo-kai Watch is famous for its parody material, and there are plenty of parodies starring Koma-san. There are plenty of them, such as "The Wig That Roars at the Sun" and "The Dog of the North Star," but one of the most popular is "Golden Demon Special: Koma-san Exploration Team"! The original source material is "Wednesday Special: Hiroshi Kawaguchi Exploration Team," but this parody is simply amazing.
The "staged" footage is simply amazing!
"Komasan Exploration Team" explores forests and snowy mountains in search of mysterious creatures that appear in nature. The "staged" footage is simply amazing. They're disguised as mysterious creatures but are actually just old men, or staff members in disguise... The original was actually full of staging, so Koma-san and the others' parodies are like this, but they're still quite bold.
Koma-san's charm 9: He also has a strict side in "Koma-san Taxi"!
The "Komasan Taxi" series shocked viewers. This segment reads out letters and emails of protest (supposedly) sent by viewers. Footage of the offending scenes is shown, forcing the offending yo-kai, who are passengers, to reflect on their actions. Although it's positioned as a complaints-handling segment, it's essentially a re-broadcast of a problematic scene, and relies heavily on jokes. Here, Koma-san and his passenger seatmate Komajiro are unusually sharp-tongued and make a lot of meta comments.
Jinmen-ken Edition
Jinmen-ken has become a regular customer of Koma-san's taxi. In the early anime, he had many appearances, even more than Jibanyan, but recently, Koma-san laments that he has hardly appeared at all. Here, Koma-san reads a letter addressed to Jinmen-ken from a viewer. The comments included comments like "It's too erotic and gross" and "The cruel treatment of the bear in the Dog Escape series made kids cry." Jinmen-inu repented and reflected on his actions.
Robonyan Arc
There was also an episode about Robonyan. Regarding the controversial episode 23, viewers sent emails saying, "I was left speechless when Robonyan, who usually seems so intelligent, blushed with pleasure after being poked by Karakuri Benkei," and "My child asked me why Robonyan was blushing, and I was stumped." Koma-san and the others added insult to injury, saying, "That was just too much," and "It was embarrassing to watch." To make matters worse, Karakuri Benkei appears as a witness, and the situation becomes even more dire... Check out the anime for more details!
Koma-san's Charm 10: Her voice is cute! Cast includes Endo Aya!
Koma-san's voice is so cute, isn't it? The voice actress is popular voice actress Aya Endo! She's appeared in many anime, including the role of Miyuki Takara in "Lucky Star" and Totoko in "Mr. Osomatsu." In Yo-kai Watch, she also plays many other roles besides Koma-san. Koma-san and his brother Komajiro, Princess Fubuki, Otona Bull, etc. In the anime, there was an episode where Endo Aya was extremely busy, with Koma-san and Princess Fubuki having to nurse Komajiro back to health after he had caught a cold.
