"The Sage Who Calls Himself a Disciple of the Wise Man" is an isekai reincarnation novel written by Hirotsugu Ryusen, originally published on the novel submission website "Let's Become a Novelist." Anticipation is building for the anime, which will finally premiere in January 2022. So, as a preview before you watch the anime, we'd like to introduce a rough synopsis, complete with spoilers!
What is "The Sage Who Calls Himself a Disciple of the Wise Man" about?
A young man named Kan Sakimori was playing a VRMMO game called "Arc Earth Online," creating a female avatar character. One day, he fell asleep and woke up in the game's world. What's more, she finds herself transformed into a female character she created in the game. Furthermore, she finds herself trapped in the game world. Confused, Sakimori must continue her adventure in the game world she's been transported to, maintaining her beautiful, sensible appearance.
Is Mira an old man inside? ?
Sakimori's original game character was a wise old man named Dumbledore. However, when she was reincarnated into the game world, she was transformed into a beautiful girl character she had created for fun. In other words, she was a wise old man inside, but only beautiful on the outside. Although Dumbledore was one of the Nine Sages, he felt it would be a disgrace to his reputation if his true appearance were revealed to be that of a young girl. Therefore, he decided to call himself "Mira" (an English pun on Sakimori Kagami's given name) and the sage's apprentice. While he appears young and is an old man, this old man was originally the player, Sakimori, so he isn't actually an old man. However, Sakimori has a strong attachment to Dumbledore, so she uses the first-person pronoun "washi" ("I").
Dumbledore's Original Appearance
The image shows Dumbledore's original appearance. He is a very dignified, elderly man with an aura about him. Dumbledore was one of the Nine Sages, but was initially shocked and surprised when he was transformed into a beautiful girl. His appearance as Mira is the polar opposite of his original self, so it's no wonder he was surprised. Despite his initial shock, his new appearance as Mira was extremely well-received, and he himself seemed to like his new appearance, saying, "I'm cute." "Washikawa," an abbreviation of "I'm cute," is also the nickname for the "sage who calls himself the Sage's Apprentice." Incidentally, the name Dumbledore is a play on the wizards Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series and Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings.
Shocking Fact!
For Sakimori, the mystery isn't simply her change in appearance or her inability to leave the game. As she investigates, she discovers even more shocking facts. First, the monsters and NPCs (non-player characters) in the game world have a sense of self. This means they act of their own volition, just like normal humans. Second, while she was asleep, 30 years had passed in the game.
Has Milla's true identity been revealed?
As mentioned above, Mira hides her true identity as Dumbledore. Generally, she never reveals her true identity. However, there are times when she is known to the members of the Nine Sages, or is discovered through various circumstances, forcing her to reveal her true identity. Because Mira is a man on the inside but a woman on the outside, she naturally participates in interactions that are unique to women. While she considers herself lucky, there are also times when the embarrassment and guilt of participating from a male perspective makes it even more difficult for her to reveal her true identity.
Character Who Revealed His True Identity: Solomon
He is the king of the in-game kingdom, the "Kingdom of Alkait." He existed in the game world before Mira. He was friends with Dumbledore, Mira's true identity, and they both contributed to the development of the kingdom. Perhaps he felt a connection as a friend when he saw Mira, as he immediately recognized Dumbledore. He often asks Mira to do work for him as one of the Nine Sages. Originally a commoner, he seems to have struggled to adapt to the duties of king, but Mira's arrival has eased his workload somewhat.
Character who revealed her true identity: Mariana
The woman on the left side of the image is Mariana. A fairy woman, she was originally Dumbledore's aide. Worried about Dumbledore's disappearance, she burst into tears when Mira told her that he was safe. Feeling guilty, Mira decided to reveal to Mariana that she was Dumbledore. Mariana was even more moved, and in an attempt to make up for lost time, she actively sought to deepen her relationship with Dumbledore in Mila's form.
Mira's Combat Abilities
Mira's distinctive fighting style is her summoning magic. She's nicknamed "Army Dumbledore" for summoning a large number of spirits to fight with, almost like an army. She's also skilled in the art of eldritch magic, and boasts considerable skill in that field. Incidentally, in the game world, summoning magic is not properly valued due to a lack of research, which angers Mira. Therefore, one of her goals in her journey is to raise the public's awareness of summoning magic. However, because her own summoning skills are so high-level, they can seem insignificant to most modern summoning techniques, which can have their downsides.
Mira's Current Rating
Mira's reputation has grown significantly as she encounters and solves various problems throughout her adventures. After solving a major incident along the way, she is now known as the "Spirit Queen" and even referred to as the successor to the King of Heroes. Since she is still unable to return to her original form as Dumbledore, her only option is to join the Nine Sages under the title of "Priest of the Wise Man." Mira is therefore engaged in various activities to raise her profile. However, perhaps due to the image conjured by her nickname "Spirit Queen," rumors are spreading among those who are unfamiliar with her appearance that she is a "stunning adult beauty."
