The Great Yozakura Family is a slapstick spy action comedy currently being serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The series will be adapted into an anime in spring 2024, and each character has a unique personality and charm. This time, we'll introduce the characters who ranked highly in the official popularity poll and discuss their appeal and reasons for popularity!
Popularity Poll Winner: Yozakura Shion
The second daughter (and fourth child) of the Yozakura family. She has pink bob hair and rarely goes outside, so she dresses rather sloppily. She's a hacking genius and is the key figure in the family's cyber and information warfare. She's also a gamer, and her method of defeating her target's system involves converting it into a game and defeating it. Her games are unnecessarily grotesque, and the enemies she must defeat take the form of Kyoichiro. In the espionage world, she's given the uncool nickname "The Great Computer Professor," which she dislikes.
What makes her so popular?
She's a lazy, gamer, and reclusive super hacker. In addition to her slightly downcast personality, her stunning figure contrasts with her seemingly girly personality, revealing her adorable personality. Perhaps her popularity stems from her voice actress, Aoi Yuki, who voices a similar character (and name, too) in Persona 5, "Sakura Futaba," who is also incredibly popular. I think everyone loves characters like this.
Second Place in the Popularity Poll: Yozakura Iyago
The third son (and fifth child) of the Yozakura family. He is characterized by his cat ear hoodie and mecha-clad body. He has an extremely hedonistic personality, hates boring things, and is a free spirit who only does what he likes, even on missions. He is an expert at disguise, able to perfectly copy everything from voice tone, physique, skin texture, and scent, and can even perfectly disguise others' appearances.
What makes him so popular?
He's mecha-clad and goes at his own pace. He has a tendency to manipulate others, which may be what fuels his popularity among women. In fact, in the series, he was ranked first in the "Cute and Cool Spies" and "Spies with Eyes That Make Your Heart Stunned," and I believe he has many female fans both in the series and in real life.
Popularity Poll #3: Taiyo Asano
The protagonist of this series. Traumatized by the loss of his entire family in front of his eyes in an accident, he is unable to converse properly with anyone except for Mutsumi Yozakura. However, after his life is threatened by Kyoichiro Yozakura, a powerful spy and extremely sister-obsessed brother who has infiltrated the school as a homeroom teacher, he marries Mutsumi and becomes a member of the Yozakura family. At first, he is an ordinary person, but through rigorous training, he gradually matures as a spy.
Why is he so popular?
The protagonist, Asano Taiyo, came in third place. At first, he was an ordinary person with extremely poor social skills due to trauma. However, after marrying the heroine, Mutsumi, and becoming a spy, he underwent rigorous training, becoming a comedic and inhuman protagonist. He's also a comedic character. Given his frequent appearances, his high ranking is understandable, but perhaps the reason he didn't take first place despite being the main character is because his personality was earnest and decent, making him a bit plain compared to the other eccentric characters.
Popularity Vote 4th Place: Yozakura Karazo
The second son (and third child) of the Yozakura family. Despite his large, muscular build, he is an extremely cowardly person. He is an expert in weapons, perfectly capable of handling not only guns and knives, but even improvised weapons. Although he is a coward who quickly loses control without a weapon, he is a sensible and caring person within his family. He also cares deeply for his son-in-law, Taiyo.
What makes him so popular?
He is a dangerous man with a muscular build and perfect weaponry, but he is actually harmless. He cares about his family and has even used his strength to help Taiyo. While he may seem unreliable, he is actually very dependable, which is probably why he's so popular.
5th Place in the Popularity Poll: Yozakura Niba
The eldest daughter (and second child) of the Yozakura family. Though she may look young with her petite build, vertically curled pigtails, and Gothic Lolita fashion, she is a sensible and reliable older sister who effectively manages the Yozakura household because her eldest son is such a good-for-nothing. She is an expert in martial arts and possesses genius talent in aikido and jujutsu. However, she has an extreme dislike for horror and is so bad at using IT equipment that she can't even type on a keyboard.
What makes her so popular?
Despite his frail appearance as a lolita, he is a fierce warrior skilled in hand-to-hand combat, making him the most reliable and dependable member of the Yozakura family. However, he is extremely averse to horror elements and IT equipment, and becomes completely useless when exposed to them. His unique personality may be the reason for his popularity.
Popularity Vote #6: Yozakura Kyoichiro
The eldest son (first child) of the Yozakura family. He is considered the most powerful member of the Yozakura family, known as the most powerful spy family. He's undoubtedly one of the most powerful spies, skillfully manipulating sharp steel wires known as "Haganugumo" (Steel Spiders), and mastering a wide range of techniques, from attack and defense to torture. At first glance, he appears to be a good-natured young man with a gentle smile, but he's an insane sister complex with an almost creepy obsession with Mutsumi. He's a good-for-nothing who quickly crosses the line when it comes to anyone who harms Mutsumi, and he'll even try to harm Taiyo if he gets the chance.
What makes him so popular?
He's a powerful, handsome, big brother figure, and while he has plenty of potential for popularity, perhaps his sixth place ranking is due to his overly intense sister complex, which is disgusting? Or is he such a good-for-nothing that readers are put off?
7th Place in the Popularity Poll: Yozakura Mutsumi
The third daughter (and sixth child) of the Yozakura family. The 10th head of the family. Although born into the Yozakura family, she is an ordinary person with no special powers, but being an ordinary person is also a requirement for being head of the family. As the main heroine, she devotedly supports Taiyo, who lost his family and suffered deep emotional wounds, and her life is also being targeted by those seeking the power of her blood.
What makes her so popular?
As the main heroine, she has as many screen time roles as Taiyo, and is an ideal heroine with a kind personality and occasional strength. Yet, he fell behind the rest of his family in the rankings. Could it be that his lack of Quirkiness as a normal person was a disadvantage? He's not a Quirkless character, but did he have less impact than his other siblings?
Popularity Poll #8: Ao Midori
A civil servant spy working for the government-affiliated intelligence agency "Hinagiku." He has a cool personality and serves as the team leader of Hinagiku, so powerful that he completely crushed Taiyo, who had only recently become a spy. He also seems like a rival character on the spy side...
What's the reason for his popularity?
Despite being a spy, he is a handsome rival character who opposes Taiyo and crushes him with his overwhelming power. While fighting with the protagonist, he also strives to improve himself, and there are more scenes where they fight together... but that's not how it goes, and his appearances decrease dramatically after that. His high ranking in the popularity poll may be related to the timing of the poll.
Popularity Poll Ranked 9th: Ai
A fighter for the spy organization "Tanpopo." A girl who was transformed into a chimera of the Ogami dog by "Hazakura" and has animal ears and a tail. Originally a child who grew up in a single-parent household and suffered excessive abuse, Mizuki murdered her mother, leading to her and Makoto's protection. After the final battle with Makoto, she became the only survivor among those compatible with Hazakura and was taken in by the Yozakura family.
Why is she so popular?
She grew up in a single-parent household and suffered abuse, and while her peers were all killed by the side effects of Hazakura, she was the only survivor. She was the kind of character everyone wanted saved, and she was. Perhaps it was a good thing she didn't have a disastrous ending.
Popularity Vote #10: Yozakura Ninki
The youngest of the Yozakura family (the "Big Nanako"). A large man who always wears a bucket on his head, he is a drug specialist with immune powers. He is resistant to all kinds of poison and has the ability to neutralize poison by ingesting it himself. He has also developed various new drugs himself. His original form is that of a small boy with odd eyes, but because his powers sometimes cause his body to mutate and become uncontrollable, he deliberately keeps his body slightly mutated.
What makes him so popular?
She ended up ranking lowest in the Yozakura family. She's the kind youngest child with no personality issues, but perhaps her overly Resident Evil-like appearance and abilities were to blame?
