New information is being released one after another about the second season of "The Duke of Death and His Maid," which will air this summer. Along with the new character visuals, it has also been announced that new cast members Masaaki Mizunaka and Reina Ueda will be joining the cast. While excitement is building for the second season of "The Duke of Death and His Maid," I'd like to introduce some memorable scenes from the first season. I hope this will get you excited before you watch the second season.
The scene where the Duke chooses to live
The first scene I want to introduce is the scene where the Duke chooses to live because of Alice's words. After being cursed and forced to live alone with Rob in the villa, the young master's heart grew increasingly hardened. As he grew older, his loneliness turned to fear, and he began to shut himself in his room. It was then that Rob hired Alice, a childhood friend, as a maid.
The Young Master Doesn't Remember Alice
However, the young master didn't remember Alice. Not even Alice, whom he loved so much. The young master had been pushed to that point. Realizing that he had become a nasty person, he told Alice to leave. However, Alice continued to stay close to the young master, wanting to be by his side. Unable to bear the situation, the young master left the house one night during a snowstorm, lost his footing on a snowy road, and fell to the ground. Just as he was thinking he might as well die, a childhood memory of Alice came back to him.
The scene where they decided to live together
At that moment, Alice, who had come looking for the young master, appeared before him. Alice scolded the young master for trying to kill himself and urged him to find happiness. Alice's expression as she pours out her feelings to the young master, saying, "There are people who love you," and asking him to consider the feelings of those left behind, really showed how much she loves him. Then, when she wants to take the young master's hand but can't, and uses the handle of her umbrella to help him stand, the scene perfectly embodies the catchphrase "I want to touch you, but I can't." It really touched my heart.
What is the meaning of white roses?
This scene, too, is filled with Alice's feelings for the young master. One day, her childhood friend Philip comes to visit. The young master had a faint hope that Philip, who hadn't visited him in a long time, might become friends with him again. However, Philip had been asked by his mother, Gerbera, to check on him. He told the young master that he didn't really want to come.
The Young Master's Anguish
His faint hope was dashed, and Philip's words left the young master feeling like a worthless person. He began to tell Alice how anxious he was without her, how he lacked confidence in himself in all aspects, and how he thought she probably hated him for being like this. The young master then said he felt he didn't even deserve to fall in love with Alice, saying that even if he wanted to give her a present, he couldn't even touch her, and that even flowers would wither and die, so he picked up a white rose.
A scene that shows the couple's pure love
Many people became fans of Alice after Alice's words and expression at the end of this scene. She took the withered white rose from the young master's hand and said, "Don't you know, young master? The meaning of the withered white rose is 'A lifetime promise.'" She then said, "This present is enough. Let's break this curse together," and her precious gesture of carrying the withered rose made a big impact. And I think it was a great scene, with Botchan's line, "Someday, I'll put a ring on your ring finger with my own hands," that really showed the two characters' heartbreaking, pure love from the very first episode.
Botchan cares about more than just Alice: His friends are important, too.
One of Botchan's charms is his kindness, which he shows not only to Alice but to everyone around him. This scene really shows how he prioritizes the secret of his curse for the sake of his friends.
The Journal Written by Alice's Mother
One day, Viola is searching for something with Walter's help. She's looking for clues about the curse on the young master. Although Viola is always nasty to the young master, she's actually worried about him. She finds a diary written by a servant around the time the young master was cursed. Viola gives it to Alice, hoping it will help her break the curse.
Daleth Under Surveillance
Watching this with a watchful eye, Dareth summons Zain and orders him to dispose of the journal, which may contain information about Zain. When Zain refuses to dispose of his friend's personal belongings, Dareth threatens to take away Kafu from him. Zareth is forced to accept the request, despite his hesitation. He sneaks the journal away from Botchan and Alice and attempts to dispose of it on the roof.
Friendship with Zain
At that moment, Bochan, searching for Zain who had suddenly disappeared, appeared. Zain honestly explained that Dalles had asked him to dispose of the journal and that Kafu was being used as a threat. However, he felt that this was wrong and returned the journal to Bochan. Bochan then handed it to Zain, asking him to burn it. "I can't cause trouble for Zain or Kafu. Burn it because you are both important friends," he told Zain. This scene really shows Bochan's kindness. In response to the young master's concerns, Zain used a magic spell he had never shown anyone other than Kafu to make it appear as if he had disposed of the monster. He also revealed that Dareth was watching over the young master and Alice. This scene clearly demonstrated the friendship between Zain, Kafu, and the young master.
The young master's determination!
Finally, I'd like to introduce the scene in which the young master expresses his determination to his mother. One day, his mother, Gerbera, calls him to the main residence. Since his father, who is hospitalized, is not doing well, she comes to discuss the succession. Gerbera told the young master that if the curse was not lifted by spring, Walter would be his heir.
The Young Master's Declaration
The young master agreed and asked Gerbera to listen to his story. He then told her that he loved Alice and asked her to agree to be with her. However, Gerbera flatly rejected him, saying that he was no joke. Born into a noble family, he had no freedom of love, let alone with a lowly maid. The young master rebelled against his mother, saying, "This is no joke. I'm serious. There's no way I could say something like this half-heartedly or jokingly."
A Strong and Devoted Love for Alice
Bochan continues, wondering if she's been confined to the villa and has been tying his heart to hers without even trying to get to know him. He confesses that it was Alice who rescued him from the darkness, and that without her, he would have died long ago. He then declares, "I'm going to marry Alice!" as he leaves the room. Bochan's feelings for Alice have grown stronger. He tells Alice, who is waiting for him with a smile, "Let's go home, our home," and returns to the villa. This scene is an exhilarating one, as Bochan expresses his feelings for Alice to his mother. It was also impressive to see a different side of Gerbera, who smiled and said, "You used to be such a kind and weak girl, but now you're talking back to me! You've really grown up."
A Summary of Memorable Scenes
These are some of the most memorable scenes from the first season. Other scenes include Alice and Bochan's date in town and the two of them together after everyone has gone home on Christmas Day, but I've chosen to focus on these four. While this is a love story, it also has strong comedic elements, and viewers will likely find their favorite scenes differently. The musical-like scenes featuring Alice and Bochan singing, as well as Alice's classic reverse sexual harassment scene, are also unique charms of this series. I'm looking forward to seeing what great scenes we'll see in season 2. Thank you for reading to the end.
