"The King's Ranking," posted on the manga posting site "Manga Hack," is a popular work with a cumulative circulation of over 1.5 million copies. The anime that aired in 2021 also attracted a lot of attention. The illustrations are cute, like a picture book, but the story is very profound, depicting the complexities of human relationships and the protagonist's struggles. The anime aired in two seasons back-to-back (2 cours), and many memorable scenes were created across the 23 episodes. In this article, we'll introduce some of the anime's best moments! After reading this article, you'll definitely enjoy the new series airing in the spring even more!
First: What kind of story is it?
Despite being born to giant parents, the protagonist Bojji is extremely small. He is so weak that he can barely wield a stone, let alone a dagger. He is also mute and deaf. He yearns for strength and dreams of becoming king, but those around him ridicule him, believing he is not cut out for the role. However, one day, his life changes dramatically when he makes a friend named "Kage."
Famous Scene 1: Bojji and Kage's Encounter
A memorable scene appears right at the beginning of the story. This is the scene where the friendship between Bojji and Kage first blossoms. Though deaf, Bojji can lip-read and understand what others are saying. He often weeps in grief. One day, Bojji is forced to fight his younger brother, Daida, but his weak strength prevents him from fighting properly and he is thoroughly defeated. Bojji sheds tears over his own helplessness, but Kage encourages him, saying, "There's nothing to be ashamed of," and "No matter what anyone says, your style is fine just the way it is." He then tells Bojji, "I want to be on your side no matter what happens from now on." Bojji has found his only trustworthy ally. At the same time, it's a moment when Kage has found an irreplaceable companion.
Famous Scene 2: Despa's Words
Despa has many famous quotes, but his words to Bojji are particularly touching. Many viewers will empathize with Bojji and feel as if they are part of his character while watching this film. While watching the anime, I found myself rejoicing as I watched Bojji's struggles and growth. Despa says the following to Bojji, who laments his powerlessness, and I'm sure many were moved by these words.
Bojji, the things you worry about may actually be your strengths. Because of those shortcomings, you've experienced many things that most people don't. It's painful, but it will surely give you the strength to forge your own path. So, love everything about yourself!
I'm sure many people worry and suffer about themselves. At times like these, it's easy to fall into negative thinking, like "I'm no good," but when that happens, try remembering Despa's words. They're truly wonderful lines that affirm and encourage you.
Memorable Scene 3: Hilling and Bojji's Growth Moves You
During a battle with the demon Gigan, the giant snake Mitsumata is seriously injured. Mitsumata is Bojji's benefactor (or perhaps even his benefactor?), having bestowed upon him various abilities. Bojji asks Hilling to heal Mitsumata. She was originally a priestess and specialized in healing magic. However, while Hilling was healing her, Gigan, whom he thought he had defeated, revives. With Hilling and his friends in dire straits, Bojji bravely confronts him with his dagger. He shatters the hammer with the dagger and easily defeats Gigan. This was the first time Hilling and Bojji had seen each other in a long time. Hilling had no idea Bojji had become so strong, and his growth brought tears to her eyes.
Famous Scene 4: Bojji and Kage's Bond
Bojji ends up fighting King Bojji, who has taken over Daida's body. Facing King Bojji in Daida's form, Bojji feels conflicted. Naturally, he has memories of his father, but he also has memories of Daida. Remembering the time Daida helped him, he resolves to fight King Bojji despite the opposition of those around him. At that moment, Kage, sensing Bojji's resolve, says, "We'll die together," and holds his hand. This scene is incredibly moving to watch. Seeing the two of them become close enough through their adventure to risk their lives for each other makes you want to root for them.
Famous Scene 5: Kage's Disappearance
The incident was resolved safely, but Kage disappeared as soon as it was over. Bojji seemed somewhat saddened by Kage's absence, despite having worked so hard to become king. Queen Hilling noticed this and told him to pull himself together, but then realized Kage was gone. While Hilling spoke of what a king should be like, she understood that Bojji's absence was extremely painful. She described the shadow as "like the sun that makes you shine." She then told Bojji, "That child (the shadow) is your talisman, someone who will protect you while also protecting you." Finally, she told Bojji, "You should live your own life." While Hilling exhorted Bojji as a queen, her concern for him showed her motherly side. This scene truly evoked her maternal kindness. She was originally portrayed as a character intentionally portrayed as having a bad impression early on, but we later learned she was a good person. This scene elevated Hilling's reputation even further.
Summary of "Ranking of Kings"'s Great Scenes
While some of these scenes are my own opinion, I've selected some that I consider to be great scenes. I'm sure each one will move you. There are many other great scenes and lines, so I recommend rewatching the original manga and anime. I'm sure it will be a moving experience once again. I'm looking forward to the new series starting in spring! That's all for now. Thank you for reading.
