Summer 2022 Anime: An Overview of Samidare's Planet

Samidare Volume 10

This series began serialization in "Young King Ours" (Shonen Gahosha) in 2005 and continued until 2010. Centered around college student Yuhi Amamiya and high school student Samidare Asahina, it is an ensemble drama in which various characters interact with each other through battles and everyday life, and experience a variety of emotions, while battling a wizard seeking to destroy the Earth. This is author Satoshi Mizukami's breakthrough work, and it has received rave reviews for its refreshing aftertaste.

Synopsis of Samidare's Planet Story!

Anime Cover

One day, Yuhi Amamiya, a completely ordinary college student, is approached by a talking lizard who asks him to help save the Earth from a "crisis." Before he can refuse, Yuhi becomes a member of the Beast Knights, and with the power of a ring, he is granted supernatural powers and a domain of control. However, he is soon attacked by the enemy. At his dire moment, Yuhi is saved by a girl named Samidare, who lives next door. Though he thought he was a savior, Samidare is actually a demon king plotting to conquer the Earth... Attracted by her absurd strength and demonic charm, Yuhi becomes her servant and aids her in her other plans.

What genre is "Samidare"?

Biscuit Hammer

"Samidare" is a genre that combines extraordinary psychic battle fantasy with heartwarming everyday ensemble drama. This is a battle fantasy story about 12 knights and 13 princesses who must protect the Earth. They risk their lives to defeat a wizard who is trying to destroy the Earth with the Biscuit Hammer, a device that destroys it. They must fight against the mud mermaids created by the wizard. Each character acts independently and influences the other characters as they go about their daily lives.

The protagonist is a twisted and distorted college student.

Yuhi Catching a Lizard

The protagonist, Yuhi Amamiya, is forced to live a life of isolation due to his terrible circumstances. The trauma of the abuse he suffered from childhood has greatly distorted his personality. However, he gradually faces his trauma and grows as a person, thanks to the appearance of the heroine, Samidare Asahina, and her sister, Hisame, who eventually become his big brother figure. However, it's not just Amamiya Yuhi who changes; Yuhi himself influences the other characters, which is what makes it so interesting!

An ensemble drama where generations interact and influence each other!

Knight on Horse

In this work, 12 knights battle clay dolls controlled by a wizard. However, the selection criteria for these knights vary in gender, personality, and generation. So there are boys and girls, young men, adults, and even middle-aged men. Older men and adults guide the young men and boys, fulfilling their roles as leaders and mentors, while the young men grow up under the influence of the adults. This ensemble drama unfolds, with boys and girls watching and being influenced by these young men. Of course, characters of the same generation also influence each other through their interactions. The story, which involves all generations and the characters' families, even feels epic.

A masterpiece packed with laughter, tears, and passionate moments!

The End of Mr. Half Moon

Samidare on the Planet is a psychic battle story, but when there aren't any battle scenes, there are plenty of humorous scenes, ranging from heartwarming everyday moments to hilarious comedy scenes. However, the story also transitions into sudden battle scenes that create tension. Some scenes are so sad you'll cry, while others are filled with excitement. These scenes are well-balanced, with the funny scenes making you laugh out loud, the heartwarming scenes making you feel warm and fuzzy, and the sad scenes bringing you to tears. Sometimes these scenes come out of nowhere, which really stirs your emotions.

What other works are similar to Planet With? Part 1: Zatch Bell!

Zatch Bell

I can think of several works that I think are similar to Samidare: Planet With. In terms of the artwork, balance and fusion of serious and comedic elements, and the similar atmosphere of battle fantasy, I would say Zatch Bell, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. While the atmosphere is similar, reading through the content reveals that Zatch Bell is a fast-paced, passionate battle, while Samidare is somewhat mystical and emotionally stirring. Essentially, they are quite different. While the exteriors are identical, the content is actually quite different.

What other works are similar to Samidare: Planet With? Part 2: GANTZ

GANTZ

The second work is GANTZ, which was serialized in Young Jump. It is similar in that players are given special abilities and fight alongside other players in life-threatening battles. The fact that players are forced to participate in battles when the time comes is also similar. GANTZ is a work serialized in a magazine for young men, and its erotic and grotesque battle scenes, as well as its depiction of human ugliness and despair, are on a completely different level, showcasing the differences between science fiction and fantasy.

What works are similar to Samidare? Part 3: Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Madoka Magica

The third work is the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which began airing in 2011. The plot of Madoka fighting a powerful witch as a magical girl in exchange for having one wish granted by a shady animal is very similar to that of Samidare. However, while Samidare's characters have shady animals as their allies, this is completely different in Madoka Magica. In Samidare's, the wish requirement is tacked on and not given much importance, but in Madoka's it's quite important. While both stories share a rather epic plot, they move in completely different directions. In fact, author Mizukami-sensei has even mentioned Madoka Magica's wish.
