The second season of Made in Abyss, originally aired in 2017, titled Golden Land of the Fiery Sun, is scheduled to begin airing in July 2022. The anime gained huge popularity for its meticulous production, cute character designs, merciless plot developments, and story of characters struggling to survive and continue their adventures against the worldview, and it even had a movie version, with a sequel due to air soon. Season 2 introduces Ilble Village, which is encountered on the sixth floor, and an important character named Faputa. In this article, we'll take a closer look at Faputa!

Firstly, what is Made in Abyss?

Season 2 Cover

Made in Abyss has been serialized in Manga Life WIN (now WEB Comic Gamma) since 2012. The first season of the anime was released in 2017, a two-part theatrical compilation film was released in 2019, and a new theatrical film depicting a battle with a certain man was released in 2020. It's a dark fantasy adventure starring a young girl named Riko and a robot boy named Reg, who venture into a vertical hole of unknown depth known as the Abyss. The setting seems to be heavily influenced by Atlus' Etrian Odyssey, and the author himself is a self-proclaimed fan. However, even compared to the Etrian Odyssey series, known for its challenging RPGs, this game is incredibly unreasonable, with virtually no return or resupply options and dungeon mechanics that are unforgiving.

The Encounter of the Lost Princesses, Fapta and Reg

Reg and Fapta

After their battle with Bondrewd in Volume 5 of the manga, Riko, Reg, and Nanachi descend to the City of No Return, the sixth layer of the Abyss. There, the three are robbed of a life-giving stone (Prushka) by an unknown assailant, and as if guided by someone, they arrive at a village where the Lost live, each with their own unique values. There, value is traded, and what people hold dear is seen through, with valuables being traded for each other. In addition, there is a rule that if something important to someone is harmed, tentacles will appear and something equally important will be taken away as punishment. Reg and Nanachi find the person they believe has stolen Prushka, and Reg chases them out of the village. There, Reg meets the fallen princess, Fapta.

Fapta: The Incarnation of Value

Fapta and the Interferometer

Unlike the other Naruhades living in the village of Naruhades, Fapta is a type of Naruhade similar to Nanachi, with a beautiful appearance and four arms. Although unique, she can speak, allowing for communication. A feral child, her movements are animal-like, but her thoughts and personality are those of a girl her age. Everyone in the village seems to respect her, calling her the incarnation of value and the princess. However, unlike the Naruhades, who are unable to leave the village, Fapta is unable to enter the village. Her catchphrase is, "So be it."

Fapta Raised by Gaburun

Fapta was alone from birth, unable to enter the village. It was a machine called an interference device that roamed the Abyss that raised her, taught her language, and gave her a name. Interference devices were placed on each layer of the Abyss by someone to gather information. The mechanical connection between them and Reg is likely a connection, but the connection is currently unknown. Fapta named the interference device Gaburun, and Gaburun combined the words Fau, meaning noble daughter, and Aputa, meaning immortal, to give the name Fapta, meaning endless princess.

Fapta Knows Reg Before He Lost His Memory

Fapta stole Prushka and deliberately left behind clues, leading Riko and her friends to the Village of the Lost. However, her reason for doing so was to test Reg. It appears that Fapta had met Reg before, meaning Reg before he lost his memory. Fapta is open with Reg, which is connected to a promise that Reg made to Fapta in the past.

What is Fapta's purpose in fulfilling his promise to Reg?

Fapta in Pain

Fapta's goal was to burn down and eradicate the village of the Forsaken. The village of the Forsaken was originally built by members of the Ganja Exploration Team, who set out to find the Golden Land of the Abyss. And at its core was Irumui, Fapta's mother and the village of the Forsaken itself. Fapta was born to avenge Irumui and her children. But how did this happen?

How and why did the Village of the Forsaken come into being?

Irumui

The people of the Village of the Forsaken are members of the Ganja Exploration Team, which once set out to find the Golden Land of the Abyss. Led by their leader, Wazcan, they made it to the entrance to the Abyss after numerous sacrifices. There, they hired a native girl, Irumui, as their guide. Abandoned by her family because she was unable to bear children, Ilmui became attached to her comrade, Veroelko. However, during their adventure, Ilmui and her comrades ingested a creature called "Mizumodoki," a creature that mimics water, putting them at risk of total annihilation. They then used the relic "Cradle of Desire" discovered in the Abyss on Ilmui.

The Village of the Lost is Ilmui Himself

Though Ilmui overcame the Mizumodoki, her appearance became increasingly grotesque. The "Cradle of Desire" is a relic that grants wishes. Abandoned because she was unable to bear children, Ilmui began to give birth to children that died shortly after birth. The comrades survive by eating the children born to Ilmui. Ilmui was given a second "Cradle of Desire," giving it the functionality of a village of the lost. In other words, the village of the lost was Ilmui himself.

Fapta's goal is to avenge her siblings and free her mother.

Furious Fapta

Irumui, who had completely lost her human form, absorbed the members of her corps into the village, becoming what it is today. However, even though she had lost her sense of self, she had not forgotten her resentment for her lost children. Irumui used another hidden "Cradle of Desire" to give birth to her final child outside the village. That child was none other than Fapta. Fapta was the very embodiment of the resentment that Irumui had been keeping trapped inside all this time.

Warning! Spoiler: Subsequent Developments ①: Fapta's Promise with Reg and His Revenge on the Village

The Beginning of the End with the Cremation Cannon

Fapta's promise to Reg was to destroy the village. Ultimately, it was to use the Cremation Cannon to "rewrite the rules of the abyss"—that is, to blow a hole in the wall protecting the village. In exchange for rescuing the imprisoned Nanachi, Fapta offers a part of his body, but the village's will, upon seeing the part, attacks Reg. Eventually, Reg finds himself in danger of losing the part, and in his desperation, he fires the Cremation Cannon. However, it turns out that Fapta has arrived to destroy the village.

Fapta and Belaf

Fapta attacks the village, going berserk. Despite Reg's persuasion, he goes berserk and incapacitates Reg. However, Nanachi and Belaf, who had captured Nanachi, appear. Belaf pours the experiences of the Irumui and the others into Fapta. Fapta relives memories of Irumui's happy times. Still, Fapta's burning desire for revenge persists, but with the village's defenses gone, the protozoans invade.

Warning! Spoiler Alert: Subsequent Developments ③ - Conclusion

Villagers and Fapta

The protozoans devour the villagers one by one. Seeing this, Fapta confronts the protozoans, urging them not to take away her reason for existence. However, the protozoans' attack leaves Fapta in tatters, and Gaboulon is destroyed. It was the villagers who rescued Fapta. To Fapta, the villagers were beings to be destroyed. However, Fapta was so valuable to the villagers that they were willing to sacrifice themselves for her. After being revived by the villagers, Fapta learned how to harness Irumui's power, and the remaining villagers chose to be consumed by Fapta and become her power.

Warning! Spoiler Alert: Subsequent Developments ④: On to a New Adventure

Fapta's Thoughts

Fapta teams up with Reg to bring an end to the battle against the primitive creatures. However, the village is completely destroyed, and the villagers return to the Abyss. After the battle, Reg asks Fapta to join him. Although Faputa is upset about being forgotten, she ultimately decides to go with Reg, Riko, and the others.
