"Kanojo mo Kanojo" will begin airing in July 2021. This marks the first time in about four years since the anime adaptation of the previous work, "Aho Girl," that a manga by the same author has been adapted into an anime. So, before the anime airs, we'll introduce the plot... Although it's only been about a year since the original manga began, and there aren't many characters, this time we'll give you a quick rundown of what's going on, including the heroine and her family!
After 10 years of hard work? The protagonist finally succeeds in confessing his feelings
The protagonist, Naoya, has been in love with Saki since elementary school. He confesses his feelings every month, and after 10 years of hard work... he finally fulfills his wish to date Saki when he becomes a high school student. That's 12 times a month. Over the nine years of elementary and junior high school, that's about 108 rejections... However, it seems he didn't dislike Saki, and after they started dating, he warned her not to cheat, and they seemed to get along well.
What was the point of that confession after 10 years? The protagonist easily cheats.
Naoya had been pursuing Saki since elementary school, but soon after they started dating, another girl confessed her love to him. The girl was cute and hardworking. However, after 10 years of confessing his feelings and finally getting a positive response, Naoya naturally turns her down...or so you'd think. Instead, he begins to worry. His answer is a shocking proposal.
The sudden start of a life of two-timing
Shortly after starting their relationship, Naoya declares that he's cheating on her. Saki initially rejects this nonsensical proposal, but she's easily persuaded and finally accepts it. It's strange to ask Saki if it's okay to cheat on her in front of her, but Naoya then suggests that the three of them live together. Again, Saki tries to refuse, but his other girlfriend, Nagisa, is enthusiastic, and the three of them start living together.
Saki's head turns pink on their first night together
On their first night together, the three decide to sleep in a river-shape, with Naoya in the middle, but after a while, Naoya and Nagisa start making some kind of noise. Saki, who has been eavesdropping on their conversation, begins to feel her head turn pink as she listens to what they're saying. Eventually, despite only holding hands, she screams, "Hey, that's inside of you!"
Nagisa's First Day at School
"What class is Nagisa in?" Saki casually asks, leading to a shocking revelation. Nagisa reveals that she's barely been attending school because she's been training hard to cook in order to impress Naoya. Saki and Naoya had never met before, but they're actually classmates in Class B. Still, fearing their cheating would be discovered, Saki suggests they pretend to be strangers at school. However, once they do, they're overcome with guilt, as if they're excluding Nagisa. Unable to bear it any longer, Naoya tries to reveal their relationship, but Saki stops him multiple times. Finally, Nagisa admits to eating in the bathroom, which sends Saki into tears...
The Bad Big Boobs? Enter Mirika
Naoya and his friends manage to keep their relationship a secret. One day, while practicing a game, they watch a gameplay video on the video streaming site MeTube, and a "bad big boobs" MeTuber, Saki's current least favorite, appears. Saki complains about how Mirika is getting views despite being bad at games because of her big boobs. Later, while eating lunch in the gym storage room, Mirika herself appears through the window. When Nagisa finds out about his cheating, he tries to threaten her, but instead, he shows her a video uploaded the day before and threatens her, saying that if she keeps quiet about him being a streamer... He ends up threatening her instead.
Kick her out or live with her? The battle with Mirika
Naoya turns down Mirika's offer to be his girlfriend, but his rejection hurts Mirika's pride, leading to a situation where he later takes drastic measures. It's a plan to live together on the same property. After being refused the offer to live together in the house, Mirika brings a tent and other items into the garden and tries to start living there. It's still early spring, and Mirika struggles with the cold and bugs, but she manages to survive by using her financial resources. Naoya and his friends, on the other hand, take drastic measures, like selling their tent. However, a certain person intervenes, leading to an unexpected turn of events...
Saki's unexpected NTR nature!?
Mirika, who was trying to live in Naoya's garden, aggressively pursued him at school. Unable to bear the sight of this, Saki stepped in between the two, and worried Naoya ended up spending the whole day at school in her arms. When Nagisa tells Naoya about this at home, he becomes jealous, and with Saki's permission, the two end up embracing each other at home. Furthermore, for some reason, Naoya asks her to watch them embrace because he's worried about her. As instructed, Saki watches them embrace from outside the room. At first, she's reluctant, but for some reason, she gradually becomes excited...
Naoya and Mirika's estrus period has dawned on her
Mirika has been aggressively pursuing Naoya, even asking to live with him. Perhaps his efforts finally paid off, as one day, the extremely insensitive Naoya finally comes to the conclusion that "Maybe Mirika likes me?" When he discusses this with his two girlfriends at home, they panic and reject him, fearing that Naoya is cheating on them. They settle the matter by explaining that Mirika's constant advances on Naoya are due to her being in heat. However, Naoya, oddly earnest in a strange way, apologizes to Mirika the next day, saying, "I mistakenly thought you liked me." This prompted Mirika to officially confess her feelings to Naoya, stealing something unbelievable before Saki and Nagisa did.
A Hot Spring Trip on Their First Date
Saki and Nagisa are left stunned and at a loss after witnessing Mirika's bold behavior. Naoya then suggests that the three of them go on a date to deepen their friendship. Upon reflection, the two realize that despite living together, they have never actually been on a date with Naoya. Each of them harbors their own feelings and begins to prepare for the trip. However, just before the trip, two uninvited guests, having caught wind of the two-timing trip, begin tailing them...
Has she finally been found out? Her best friend witnesses the two-timing date!
Has Saki been cheating on him for a while now? Shibano, Saki's best friend, was suspicious, and when she heard that she was going on a hot springs trip with Naoya, she guessed that if she was being cheated on, then perhaps the three of them were going together. Shibano found out their destination over the phone from Saki, and decided to secretly follow them to find out the truth. When they arrived in Hakone, she spotted the three of them together. Nagisa immediately threatened Mirika with a video exposing her identity, and escaped, pretending that she had come with Mirika and had met the two by chance. Naoya and Saki also quickly fled the scene.
A once in a lifetime opportunity? 5-Minute Limited Edition: Mirika's Temptation
Naoya and his friends split up after Shibano's arrival. However, Naoya, worried about Nagisa, follows her and ends up in the women's bath. Still, Nagisa, determined to support Naoya and Saki on their date, escapes Naoya again. Naoya and Mirika are left alone in the bathroom. Seeing this as a golden opportunity to seduce her, Mirika tries to show off her cleavage... but Naoya doesn't respond. Mirika then changed her mind and said she wanted to talk to Naoya to get to know him better, rather than try to seduce him, and Naoya gave her five minutes alone.
After Mirika, it's Shibano!? Naoya appears in the women's bath again.
After spending five minutes with Mirika, Naoya rushes off to look for Nagisa, but he slips and falls off the roof into the women's bath. There he finds Shibano, who suspects Nagisa of cheating. At first, Shibano is flustered by the suddenness of the situation, but the conversation soon turns to the two-timing issue... Shibano, citing reason and the Constitution, categorically opposes cheating, but Naoya is left defenseless. He attempts to climb over the wall and escape the bathroom, but Shibano grabs him by the pants and stops him. However, Naoya and Shibano lose their balance and end up entangled in a tangled mess, which Saki and Nagisa witness...
A happy ending with everything revealed?
Nagisa has been reserved and given way to Saki throughout the trip, but after hearing her share her past memories, Naoya becomes even more determined to keep her. After discussing it with Naoya, she finally kisses him in front of everyone, including Shibano, revealing her cheating status by saying, "I'm Naoya's girlfriend too." Leaving Shibano and Mirika completely unconvinced, Nagisa then enjoys her trip without any reservations.
"Kanojo mo Kanojo" Plot Summary
So far, we've given a rough rundown of the plot from episode 1 through the hot spring arc. What did you think? Things continue to get more complicated with Shibano involved, but for now, with the original manga coming to a close, I think it's highly likely that the anime will be adapted up to this point. It's unclear how much of the story will be adapted into an anime, but the exploits of the four heroines are sure to be a highlight.
