"Hyoukare: Don't Call It Mystery" is a work serialized in Monthly Flowers, and is a new work after the serialization of 7SEEDS ended. It is pronounced "Hyoukare: Don't Call It Mystery." As the name suggests, it is a mystery in which the main character, a detective named Kuno Osamu, solves cases after various events, but the process leading up to the conclusion is not sure whether it can be called a mystery or not... It's a mystery, but it's not a mystery, so if you ask me what it is, I can't really explain it! I would like to introduce the plot of each episode of "Hyoukare: Don't Call It Mystery," which has such a mysterious charm! However, I will avoid giving away spoilers about the ending because I want you to read the work.
Synopsis①: "A college student suspected of murdering a classmate"
A college student, Tono Kuno, whose hobby is making curry, is arrested by the police on a day off. The suspect is murder, and the victim is his classmate, Sagae Ken, from the same university. Sagae was a rich, playboy classmate, but his body was found in a nearby park, and there were also witnesses who said he had been arguing with someone who looked very similar to Tono. Tono was taken to the interrogation room, but he denied the crime because he didn't do it. Then, he starts chatting with the detectives who come one after the other about things that are not really related to the case.
A great detective who can see through the truth?
The conversation is about things that are not related to the case, such as "It's actually normal for a daughter to treat a doting father like dirt," "A story about a pet that died," and "My pregnant wife is in a bad mood." However, the content of the conversation was very critical and piercing to the person in question. Rei wasn't just randomly choosing a topic, but closely observing the person in front of him, and from that he was able to deduce the worries and true nature of that person.
The detective who is forcing Rei to be the culprit
The detective in charge of the interrogation, Yabu, was convinced that Rei was the culprit. He then said that the murder weapon used in the crime, a fruit knife with traces all over it that belonged to Rei, was found in the garbage dump, and tried to conclude that Rei was the culprit. However, Rei completely denied the crime. However, the evidence was perfectly in order. Sei learns that Detective Yabu was once run over by a hit-and-run driver and his wife and child were killed, along with witness testimony and evidence. From this, Sei draws a certain conclusion.
Synopsis 2: "Strange Bus Jacking"
After being cleared of suspicion, Sei makes curry on his day off as usual and goes to see a museum, which is his hobby. However, the bus he jumps on is hijacked. However, the bus hijacker's demands are strange. The criminal's demand is that the passengers on board introduce themselves and state their shortcomings. The culprit, Inudo Otoya, is short-tempered and quick to get angry, and does not seem to be a very thoughtful person, but he was well prepared for the crime.
Sei and the others are taken to a mysterious mansion
There, Sei's chatter explodes, and as expected, his chatter is so intense that it is inevitable that the listener will be infuriated, and Otoya becomes enraged and starts swinging a knife, but it is passenger Sakamoto who holds him down. Otoya and Sakamoto are brothers and are in cahoots. He calls himself Garo Inudo. Kumada, a passenger next to him, asks Rei if he was testing how much he could say to make the culprit angry. Rei had no intention of doing so. The group asks the next question: tell them the way they would hate to die the most. While each passenger answers the way they would hate to die the bus arrives at a certain mansion.
What is the purpose of the bus hijacker?
Around that time, the police were talking about a certain case. The case was a series of murders in which women were killed and buried. Even after arriving at the mansion, Rei and the others tell them to confess to the "trolley problem" and "the biggest crime they have committed." Rei somehow manages to contact the outside world from the mansion, and gets in touch with Ikemoto, whom he met in the previous case, and learns that the surname Inudo is the same as the name of the serial murder victim. Rei then deduces that the mastermind of the criminal group, the real Inudo Garo, is among the hostages, and the criminal's purpose. The criminal, Inudo Garo,'s purpose was to find the murderer who killed his sister.
Synopsis 3: "Let's go to Hiroshima"
One day, Rei decides to go to Hiroshima. This was because he was hoping to be able to meet Garo Inudo again, and because the Impressionist exhibition that he was unable to attend due to the bus hijacking incident would be held. Sei was eating a bento box on the Shinkansen, and a woman sat next to him, taking out a letter and reading it. Sei glanced at it and realized that the text on the surface of the letter and the illustrations around it had completely different messages.
What does the letter mean?
The letter contained hidden messages suggesting that she should not come to him, that she should run away, and that there had been violence or other domestic violence. The girl's current mother is not her real mother, and she lied about taking her in because her parents died. She found a stack of letters in her closet and sent a letter to her real father. Her real mother had warned her not to let her abusive father find out. Then, Rei was quick to spot her current mother, who had followed her out of concern for her daughter, and the truth was revealed to him.
Synopsis 4: "A Mysterious Story About a Certain Family"
While sightseeing in Hiroshima, Rei is approached by a woman and two men who are involved with her. The woman immediately asks Sei for help, but Sei realizes that the woman was on the same Shinkansen train. The man who approached her immediately realizes that she was being asked by the woman. The woman's name is Shioji Kariatsume, and she is an acquaintance of Garo Inudo. Shioji asks Sei to do a part-time job for her.
Cursed family inheritance?
The part-time job was related to the Kariatsume family inheritance. When inheritance is decided, each candidate is given a task to compete against, and it has been said that in every inheritance battle, someone dies. In fact, Shioji's father and the family of the other candidates were killed instantly when the car driven by Shioji's father was involved in a car accident. Sei ends up trying to solve the mystery of the Karishu family inheritance in Garo's place. The task is to "put everything in each storehouse where it should be, with neither excess nor deficiency," and Sei and his friends are given the key to the storehouse to investigate.
Is it cursed after all?
Inside the storehouse were "Dolls representing the seasons", "Pottery", "Rusty weapons", and "A room and a notebook". Along the way, there was an incident where someone tried to kill someone else in an accident. The culprit was Shioji, but it was an act of not wanting to admit that the car driven by her father had killed other family members. After that, the candidates for the inheritance resolved their grudges and everyone worked together to solve the mystery.
Was someone killed after all?
Afterwards, Rei was almost hit by a car driven by someone and fell into the river. Although he was saved without any particular incident, as the investigation progressed, they came to the suspicion that Shiori's father and others may have been killed by someone after all. Together with her cousins and the lawyer family member who played the role of supervisor, Kurumasaka Tomoharu, they deduce that the reason they lost their lives over inheritance was because they had a common feature of having natural curls and looking like foreigners, and that they were killed because they arrived at a certain truth as a result of investigating the topic given at the time of inheritance.
Demon Gathering
The group investigates the play "Demon Gathering," which Shioji's fathers must have seen. Demon Gathering was performed nine years ago, and in summary, "Long ago, three demons served as servants in a rich family, and when they found an opportunity, they killed the head of the family and took his wife, but the child escaped. Eventually, the wife gave birth to a demon child, but if the child they let escape comes to seek revenge, it will be a disaster. Because they are worried about this, if a child who looks like a demon is born, they will kill them all, bury them, and build a storehouse on top of them." The screenwriter committed a mysterious suicide, and all of his belongings were collected by the family's lawyer.
Human bones from the storehouse
Deducing that the story is true, they dig underground in the storehouse and find a large number of human bones. The screenplay for Oni no Shuu was based on a true story in which the Karishu, Makabe, and Kurumazaka families conspired to rob houses and kill children with demonic features. Furthermore, Shioji's fathers also solve the mystery and discover that they had actually found the descendants of the children who had escaped. So, Sei tells everyone in the family the location of the USB that contains the location of the runaway child. However, it was Sei's bluff.
【Hyouka: Treasure】Spoiler summary
I've introduced the episodes of Hyouka: Treasure with spoilers. It's a pretty strange mystery? And the more you read it, the more interesting it becomes. Sei, the main character, just talks about all sorts of things, and although it seems like the story is going off on a tangent, it's actually getting to the heart of the matter, which is novel and interesting. This summary contains spoilers, but does not reveal the ending. Check out the ending for yourself!
