What is Hell Girl?

This horror and suspense anime, which first aired in 2005 and has now aired four seasons, is enjoyable for people of all ages and genders as it depicts the various human relationships of those who access Hell Communication, a website where they can send those they hate to hell.

Enma Ai (voiced by Mamiko Noto)

The protagonist of this work, a young girl who accepts requests to settle unrequited grudges as Hell Girl. She wears an old-fashioned sailor uniform, but changes into a glamorous kimono when she is sent to Hell. She was originally a human girl, but was betrayed by the person she trusted most, and out of hatred committed the grave sin of burning down a village, so she was ordered by Hell to carry out her duties as Hell Girl.

Ichimokuren (voiced by Masaya Matsukaze)

One of Ai's three familiars, Ichimokuren was originally the Tsukumogami, a sword used for assassins. He has a modern, handsome appearance and is an acknowledged narcissist. He was found abandoned on the battlefield a long time ago and was picked up by Ai, and has since become her companion. His ability is to use his eyes to see into walls and ceilings, and to see into distant rooms and other interiors.

One of Ai's three familiars, she has a sexy, older sister-like appearance. She was originally a human woman like Ai, but was killed in a series of betrayals, and perhaps out of hatred, she was unable to die properly, turning into a frightening monster that Ai picked her up. Her ability is to turn her body into a skeleton, which she often uses to frighten others.

He is one of the three Straw Hats of Love, and is the oldest of the three, with the appearance of a middle-aged man. He is the longest-serving of the three and serves as the leader. He was originally a wheel on the carriage that transported the princess, but while he was trying to get the princess to leave he had an accident and the princess died. Feeling guilty about this, he turned into a youkai, but was then picked up by Ai. His ability is to turn into a wheel and often transport Ai to her destination.

He joined the Three Straw Hats in the third season, effectively making him the Fourth Straw Hat. He appears as a boy wearing short sleeves and shorts, and speaks very politely. She is well-liked by Kikuri, and calls her Princess. Unlike the other Three Strawberries, she was originally not a monster but a type of mountain fairy. After meeting a family who lived in the mountains and experiencing a sad parting, she learned the loneliness of solitude and became a friend of Ai and the others. At the end of the fourth season, she left Ai and the others and went to live with Michiru, the new Hell Girl.

A character introduced in the second season, this free-spirited girl with a childlike appearance. Her true identity is unknown, and she calls herself the next Hell Girl, but unfortunately, no one, including Ai, recognizes her. While her childish behavior often causes problems, she also has a cold-hearted side to her. In Season 4, she showed a rare glimpse of dejection after her beloved Yamao disappeared.

Aino's Grandmother, voiced by Eriko Matsushima

This middle-aged woman lives with Ai, but she is never seen in the anime, and her voice is only heard or spoken through a shoji screen. I'd only ever spoken to Ai, but at the end of the second season, I finally spoke to the Three Straw Hats.

Human-Faced Spider CV: Shibata Hidekatsu

This spider, with its large eyes on its back, is always watching over Ai. His identity has never been explicitly stated, but he is the one who appointed Ai as Hell Girl, and from their conversations, it seems he is of a higher rank than Ai.

Shibata Hajime (voiced by Nishimura Kazuhiko)

One of the key characters in the first season of the anime, he is a freelance journalist. After learning of Hell Girl's existence, and based on her own experience, she believes revenge is not a good thing, she tries to find the people who used Hell Communication and persuade them to stop their revenge, but she always fails to stop them just before the end, and ultimately, struggling with the meaning of Hell Girl's existence, she gives up, realizing that it is not something she can do on her own, and disappears from the story.

Shibata Hajime's daughter, a young elementary school student, is one of the key characters in the first season, just like Hajime. While she behaves and speaks in a mature manner for her age, deep down she is a lonely girl her age. After meeting Enma Ai, her mind becomes linked to Ai's, and she is able to see Ai's words and the scenery she sees, but this is thought to be the influence of her being distantly related to Ai. Unlike Hajime, she has appeared regularly since the second season, and her appearance has become that of an adult.

She occasionally appears from the second season onwards, but she has now become a fully grown adult. In the third season, she works as a school nurse, and in the fourth season, she works as a caregiver, pursuing jobs that help others.

Sentaro (voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga)

A boy who lived in the same village as Ai and is her cousin. Ai was about to be killed as a human sacrifice according to village custom, so he hid her for six years without telling the villagers, and they had a deep bond. However, the villagers found out that he had been hiding her, and in order to protect himself, he and the villagers buried Ai in the ground with great anguish. In the end, she resurrected from the earth, and in a rage, he left the village with Ai on his back, burning down the village.

Takuma Kurebayashi (voiced by Ayumi Fujimura)

He's an elementary school student who plays a key role in the second season. He moved to a new residential area called Lovely Hills. Suspected of murdering his own family, he accesses Hell Communication to seek revenge, but decides against it, realizing that revenge is not a good thing. However, he becomes the target of criticism from the townspeople, being called the child of the devil, being falsely accused of crimes committed by the townspeople, and being assaulted, and in the end he is sent to hell by Iigo Hotaru, the only person who helped him, but he miraculously survives thanks to Ai's consideration.

Meshiai Hotaru (voiced by Fuyuka Oura)

A middle-school-aged girl who believed in Takuma's innocence. Her brother is a police officer and is confident and has a strong sense of justice, so she desperately protected Takuma from the townspeople. However, after her brother was sent to hell, she became fed up with everything and, believing that everything would end if Takuma were gone, she sent Takuma to hell and then attempted suicide by drowning herself. She is rescued by Takuma, who survived from hell, and the scene after she is seen sleeping in a hospital bed is unknown.

Mikage Yuzuki (voiced by Satomi Sato)

A quiet, ordinary middle school girl who serves as the secondary protagonist of the third season. One day, after being used as a vessel by Enma Ai, she develops a constitution similar to Tsugumi from the first season, becomes able to recognize people who have come into contact with Enma Ai, and persuades them to stop sending people to Hell. Although listed as a third-year middle school student, she actually suffered a tragic loss in elementary school, losing both parents and dying alone. After realizing that her own death was a delusion or hallucination, Yuzuki, now a middle school student, recognizes the need for Hell Communication and decides to live as a second Hell Girl.

Takasugi Akie (voiced by Oki Kanae)

A key character in the third season, Yuzuki's best friend. The daughter of a police officer, she is targeted for revenge by the daughter of the victim of a crime her father covered up. She is then exiled to Hell and disappears right in front of Yuzuki. She is an important character, and it could be said that the incident with Akie had a major impact on Yuzuki's future.

Sagae Michiru (voiced by Watada Misaki)

Source: Hell Girl ©Hell Girl Project/Sky Perfect Wellthink, Aniplex

An 11-year-old girl who is a key character in the latest series, "Hell Girl: Yoi no Kakera." Although she is a spirit who cannot remember who she is, she often appears before Ai and her friends when they perform the Hell Sluice ritual and ask, "Is that okay?" Her true identity is that of a girl who was ostracized by her village during the Taisho era and had her entire family burned to death, but like Ai, she was resurrected by hatred and burned villagers to death. Remembering this, Michiru also becomes Hell Girl, bringing along the Yamawaro, in order to atone for her grave sin. Unlike Ai, Hell Girl's work tends to be relatively selective in the requests she takes on.
