We will be explaining in detail about Happy and other Exceeds, the mascot characters that appear in the popular manga "FAIRY TAIL" by Mashima Hiro, which has sold over 60 million copies worldwide.

What is an Exceed?

The true identity of the "Exceed" is a race that resembles a cat and lives on the floating island of Edolas, "Extalia." They are born from eggs the same size as their parents. Shagot, the queen of the Exceeds, uses her precognitive abilities to protect the Exceeds, who are weaker creatures than humans and do not have strong magical powers. By making the humans believe that the Exceeds are "gods who decide the death of humans," she protects the peace of the kingdom.

Therefore, in Edolas, the Exceeds are treated as angels and worshipped by humans as sacred beasts. Queen Shagot, terrified at the prospect of the "Collapse of Extalia," sent her children to Earthland in the form of eggs (100 in total). Happy, Charles, Lecter Frosch, and Samuel of the Legion were born from those eggs.

When Shagot turned evil, he needed a reason to send Happy and the others to Earthland in egg form, so he gave them the mission of "eliminating the Dragon Slayer." However, the order was changed to "bring the Dragon Slayer back to Edolas." Some Exceeds, like Panther Lily and Samuel, can transform into a human-like combat mode and display exceptional strength and magic. Although he is not aware of it, Charles can also control his wings (Aera) and his precognitive abilities. As a result of his training, Charles has also learned transformation magic, allowing him to take on a human form.

Happy

6 years old, with a green crest on his back. A cute blue cat who always wears a green neckerchief around his neck. He likes fish and dislikes dogs (Plue is fine with that). He is 48.6cm tall. Happy uses "Oira" as his first-person pronoun and his catchphrases are "Ai" and "Aisa." He talks cutely, but he always says harsh things and makes jokes that are a little on the sharp side.

Happy can use magic to fly in the sky with the wings on his back called "Era." Exceeds are born with wings already growing, allowing them to fly immediately. They can carry about one adult (Happy says a second person would be impossible). Usually, they fly by themselves using magic, but they often carry Natsu as well. However, they are always a little reluctant, saying, "I don't like it because Lucy is heavy." In addition to wings (Eira), Mirajane taught them transformation magic, but they are not very good at it.

Charles

A mage belonging to the "Cat Inn". Partner of the Sky Dragon Slayer Wendy Marvell. After the "Cat Inn" disappeared, he joined Fairy Tail together with Wendy.
A talking cat like the protagonist's partner Happy (when he first appeared, he was called "female Happy"). Like Happy, he was born six years ago when an egg sent to Earthland, the real world, hatched.

Since he was born with fragmentary powers of foresight, unlike Happy, who has no memory at all, he mistakenly remembered the mission to return to Edolas. Because of this, he initially called Happy "male cat" and looked down on him, but after the events in Edolas, he began to call him by his name. After returning from Edolas, his precognitive abilities became stronger, and from the second part onwards he was able to transform into a human using transformation magic.

Lily

Formerly the captain of the First Demon War Squad of the Edolas Kingdom Army. In the past, he was branded as a fallen angel for taking Jellal back to Extalia without permission in order to treat him, and was driven out of his homeland to join the Kingdom, where he fought Gajeel in the Edolas arc. After traveling to Earthland with the other Exceeds due to a reverse Anima development, he accepted Gajeel's invitation during the battle (he was unhappy that he didn't have a "feline with wings" as a partner) and joined Fairy Tail.

Originally, he has a muscular body that is over 2m tall, but in Earthland, his body did not match his physical condition, and his body shrank to the same size as a normal Exceed. However, if he puts his will into it, he can return to his original form, "Battle Form," for a short time. His clothes and weapons are sized to fit his body.

Other Exceeds

Lecter

He is the partner of Sting Eucliffe, a third-generation dragon slayer who belongs to "Sabertooth". He is a 13-year-old cat with reddish-brown fur and a crest on his back. His catchphrase is "~! Hi" and he calls people around him with "kimi".

He wants to become stronger, and when he was a child, he was fascinated by Sting's strength and became his apprentice. Since people around him didn't believe that Sting had defeated a dragon as a child and called him a liar, he made a promise with Sting that he would "defeat the fire dragon (Natsu) in front of everyone and make him no longer a liar," and he believes that Sting is the strongest.

Frosch

He is the partner of Rogue Cheney, one of the five strongest members of Sabertooth, the same as Sting. His gender and age are unknown, and he is a green cat wearing pink frog clothes and has the guild's emblem on his back. He likes frogs and dislikes earthworms. She refers to herself as "Flo" and her catchphrase is "Flo thinks so too." She has been wearing the pink frog costume ever since she found it. Although she appears to move slowly at first glance, she is actually physically faster than Lecter.

She has a childish and somewhat lisping tone, but like Rogue, she is a caring and considerate person who worries about Yukino, who was expelled from the guild.
She seems to be on good terms with Lecter, despite their differences, and was depressed when he disappeared. She grew up believing she was a frog, but when she found out she wasn't a frog, she cried for three days. She has never left Rogue's side since they first met.

Natsu and Happy's Encounter

Childhood Natsu

Happy was born from a mysterious egg that Natsu picked up in the forest when he was still a boy. Until then, Fairy Tail had been rough, but the moment Happy was born, everyone smiled, and Natsu, seeing this, named him "Happy" to mean happiness. Happy from Fairy Tail is very close with his godfather Natsu, and the nameplate on their house reads "NATSU & HAPPY" and they are always together. By the way, Natsu seems to have thought Happy was a dragon at first.

The bond between Natsu and Happy

Natsu is a dragon slayer who gets motion sickness just by riding on a moving object, but when Lucy asked Natsu, "Why don't you get motion sickness when you fly with Happy?", he answered, "Happy is not a vehicle, he's a friend!" Natsu and Happy are really close and have a strong bond.

The relationship between Happy and Charles

Happy, who had never met an Exceed like himself, fell in love at first sight with Charles, who had the same cat form as himself. Happy actively pursued Charles, giving him his favorite fish and calling him a "male cat," but Charles was cold towards Happy and did not call him by his name.

Angry Happy

The reason Charles kept Happy at a distance was because Happy's behavior, which he had lost, looked very carefree to Charles, who was suffering from the memories of Edolas. It seems that Charles was troubled in his own way. Although Charles had been acting coldly, he called Happy by his name for the first time in the Edolas arc when Happy angrily said, "I'm a Fairy Tail wizard!" Since then, he stopped calling Happy the male cat and has even shown signs of worrying about Happy. It seems that the Edolas incident has gradually brought them closer.

Summary

The Exceeds are known for being cute even among the Fairy Tail characters. I'm sure many people have been comforted by their appearance. Be sure to check out the Exceeds' exploits in the anime and the original work.
