Detective Conan: The Criminal's Fukazawa-san is an official spin-off of Weekly Shonen Sunday's popular flagship series, Detective Conan. Detective Conan is a popular and long-running detective story, and as the series progresses, the number of victims increases. However, since almost no time passes within the story, this means that there is at least one murder per day - a contradiction in the plot that everyone has probably thought about at least once. Characters from the main story do appear, but they are treated differently. In this article, we'd like to explain how the characters are treated in comparison to the original work!
Character Treatment in the Original Work, Part 1: Edogawa Conan
The protagonist of this work is high school detective Shinichi Kudo. He witnesses a mysterious business transaction on a tropical island with his childhood friend Ran Mouri. To keep him quiet, he is forced to take drugs that shrink his body but leave his mind intact. With the help of scientist Professor Agasa, Shinichi decides to conceal his identity to avoid endangering his family. During a conversation with Ran, he impulsively introduces himself as Edogawa Conan, and thereafter, he ends up working as Conan at the detective agency of Ran's father, detective Kogoro Mouri. He gets caught up in all sorts of incidents, and is always the first to uncover the truth. However, since a child can't show off his deductive reasoning skills, he puts Kogoro into a coma with a watch-shaped tranquilizer gun invented by the professor, and then solves the cases by pretending to be Kogoro using a bowtie-shaped voice changer.
How He Works in Hanzawa-san
Whenever a case arises, he appears out of nowhere and solves it without anyone noticing. When things get inconvenient for him, he often pretends to be an elementary school student to cover up the situation. For some reason, he's highly trusted by police officers, and for some reason, detectives he knows often blurt out important information. Not only does she appear wherever crimes occur, but wherever she goes, murders occur, so she's treated like a grim reaper herself, bringing trouble.
Character Treatment in the Original Work, Part 2: Ran Mouri
The heroine of this work. Shinichi Kudo's girlfriend, she is a brave heroine who continues to wait for Shinichi after his sudden disappearance. She practices karate and is a skilled karate practitioner, having won the Kanto tournament, and is able to dodge bullets from a handgun. As the heroine, she is often taken hostage, but as mentioned above, she is so strong that the perpetrators are actually more worried about her.
Her Treatment in Hanzawa-san
The horns of her hair are overly emphasized. Even when she encounters a crime scene in Beika Town, where murders are rampant, she remains completely unfazed. Even when shot by the criminals, she catches the bullet with her bare hands and defeats them with overwhelming strength, making her the strongest character. It's almost as if she's in the wrong show. Perhaps this level of strength is necessary to live in Beika Town, constantly accompanied by the Grim Reaper, without being killed.
Character Treatment in the Original Work, Part 3: Kogoro Mouri
A former detective turned private investigator. Ran Mouri's father, he is known to the public as "Sleeping Kogoro," solving cases as if asleep. However, in reality, Conan puts him to sleep with a tranquilizer gun and then pretends to be Kogoro to solve the cases. He's a typical bad dad, with a penchant for gambling and alcohol, and his deductive skills are so poor he barely even comes close. He often holds Conan back, such as by trying to chase him away from the scene. However, like his daughter, he's strong and occasionally uses his experience as a detective to solve cases.
Treatment by Hanzawa-san
For some reason, he often has a needle stuck in his neck, but he doesn't seem to mind, just removes it and throws it away. Recently, he seems to have developed a resistance to the anesthesia, and its effects are beginning to wear off. While Hanzawa-san still treats Conan the same as always, since it's strange for Conan to be wandering around a crime scene in the first place, he is seen as a sensible person by Hanzawa-san.
Character Treatment in the Original Work, Part 4: Professor Agasa
The first person Shinichi revealed his true identity to after his body was shrunk by drugs. With his advice, Shinichi decided to hide his true identity as Conan. He is an inventor, and many of the gadgets Conan uses are his inventions, which are useful in a variety of situations. While he may or may not be well-known as an inventor, he lives in a luxurious mansion and does not appear to be particularly struggling financially. He currently lives with Ai Haibara.
Treatment in Hanzawa-san
He's treated like a total mad scientist. In his first appearance, he lured Hanzawa-san with a high part-time job offer to improve the tranquilizer gun, which had become less effective against Kogoro, and pursued safety, putting him into a three-week coma. Since then, he's frequently created strange inventions and attempted to use Hanzawa-san as a test subject.
Character Treatment in the Original Work, Part 5: Ai Haibara
Shiho Miyano is a former member of the Black Organization. She is a brilliant scientist and the creator of "APTX (Apotoxin) 4869," which transformed Conan into a child. For some reason, she defected from the organization and was on the verge of being eliminated, but she managed to escape with her life by ingesting "APTX (Apotoxin) 4869" herself. She then took refuge with Professor Agasa.
Treatment in Hanzawa-san
While living with the mad scientist Professor Agasa, he continues his own shady research. He appears to be developing new drugs using APTX (Apotoxin) 4869, a drug with which he has a deep connection in the story. He also seems to be overworking Professor Agasa.
Character Treatment in the Original Work, Part 6: Kaito Kid
Conan's rival and the protagonist of "Magic Kaito," originally written by Gosho Aoyama. Appearing in a white tuxedo, cape, and top hat, this elusive phantom thief steals his targets amidst tight security. He's a master of disguise and boasts exceptional physical abilities and intellect. However, he isn't a thief for financial gain; instead, he returns what he steals. Therefore, he's seen more as a hero and performer than a criminal.
Treatment in Fukazawa-san
Due to the jinx that episodes featuring Kaitou Kid rarely result in deaths, the residents of Beika Town, who live in constant fear of death, treat him like a savior. Despite swearing he wouldn't steal, he actually does so after falling for Fukazawa-san's dog.
[Detective Conan: Fukazawa-san the Criminal] Comparing Original Characters
Here's a summary of the differences between the original and current treatments of characters from Fukazawa-san! This work, which takes advantage of the fact that a long-running mystery series often sees a high number of deaths in a short period of time, is a comedy manga that's completely different from the original. I'm looking forward to seeing how the characters from the original work will be portrayed in this unexpected anime adaptation!
