Hiro (official name Code:016) appears as the protagonist of the popular series Darling in the Franxx, which began airing in January 2018. Hiro has a different personality and setting from the typical protagonists of robot anime up until now, and we hope to share his charm and make you fall in love with him.
What kind of character is Hiro?
The protagonist, Hiro, is a parasite created by adults to pilot the Franxx, a mysterious giant creature created to fight the Klaxosaurs. His official name is "FP40-T3NL-016," but adults refer to him by his nickname "Code: 016." Hiro wants to defeat the Klaxosaurs with his friends, but he has lost his skills as a Franxx pilot and is looked down upon by his friends as a failure.
Hiro will never give up!
Although the protagonist Hiro has lost the ability to control Franxx, he continues to train every day, believing that one day he will be able to control them. However, no matter how much he trains, his ability to control Franxx will not return. His fellow parasites, the adults, and even Hiro himself know this, but he refuses to give up and continues to work hard. Hiro never gives up and is a hard worker.
Hiro will do anything to pilot a Franxx!
Hiro hated the situation of having to just watch his fellow parasites fight the Klaxosaurs. At that time, he was given another chance to check his suitability as a Franxx pilot, but he still couldn't handle it well. The last time he piloted it, he was asked to "kiss" Ichigo, and he did, and he kissed her. Even though he didn't know the meaning of kissing, Hiro is so cool, he will stop at nothing to fulfill his belief in wanting to handle a Franxx. In fact, I'm jealous.
Hiro was popular with everyone as a child!?
Hiro was a bright and popular child, hard to believe he is the gloomy and dreary Hiro he is today. He was the center of attention and a leader for the group. He crossed the line from the other parasite trainees, thinking and acting differently, but the adults were wary of him. Hiro was like a hero to everyone as a child.
Hiro's naming sense is outstanding!
Parasite candidates were called by their code names by the adults, but Hiro, feeling sorry for them, gave each one a nickname instead of their code name. His naming sense is outstanding. For example, "Code:015" is "Strawberry." Anyone could think of that. However, "Code:214" is "Futoshi." Isn't his naming sense quite outstanding for a child?
Hiro has a strong sense of justice!
Hiro spots Code:002, a humanoid lifeform with bright red skin, large horns, and blue blood that he saw in a lab as a child. Witnessing the inhumane treatment, Hiro feels sorry for Zero Two and abducts her from the lab where she is being held captive. In a situation where it was not even acceptable to stand up to adults, young Hiro saved Zero Two with his sense of justice. Perhaps this sense of justice is what makes Hiro so appealing.
Hiro charges into any dangerous endeavor!
Even as Zero Two, who is considered a nuisance by the other parasites, rampages around without regard for her surroundings, Hiro charges toward her, surrounded by Klaxosaurs, in his weak training robot. Even though he knows he lacks power, he is always the first to rush to the people and friends he wants to save. Although he may seem unreliable in normal times, Hiro is a reliable presence in times of need.
He loves Zero Two. He's devoted!
Hiro is always thinking about Zero Two, and he's always there for her when she's worried or sad. It is precisely because of Hiro's devotion that Zero Two, who built walls around herself and refused to interact with others, has begun to open up to Hiro and the other parasites around her. To Zero Two, devoted Hiro is a hero and her one and only darling!!
Everyone relies on Hiro!
Now that Hiro has joined his friends in fighting the Klaxosaurs, he has regained their trust and become a leader, just like he was as a child. When problems arise, he discusses them, offers ideas, and brings them to a conclusion. He also offers personal advice, showcasing Hiro's inherent good nature.
Is Hiro an Unusual Protagonist?!
Hiro has an unusual personality for a robot anime protagonist. While most robot anime protagonists are portrayed as wimps, that's not the case with Hiro. He wants to pilot a Franxx, fight, and be useful, and he's always willing to fight. I want to emulate his dedication to fighting, believing that fighting can protect his friends.
Hiro's voice actor is Yuto Uemura!

*Yuto Uemura is on the far left.
Yuto Uemura is the voice actor for Hiro. His previous anime appearances include Kamigami no Asobi (Tsukito Totsuka) and Bungo Stray Dogs (Atsushi Nakajima). His voice is a little low-pitched, but easy to listen to and has a comforting quality. While he has only appeared in a few anime so far, there's no doubt he'll become even more popular.
