Code Geass began airing in 2006 and remains popular even now, over 10 years later. We've made a subjective ranking of those with the power of "Geass," the king that plays a key role in the story!

Geass Ability Ranking: #15 "Marianne vi Britannia"

Geass: Passing Through Other People's Minds

The activation condition is physical death. When her body was killed by V.V.'s attack, she awakened to Geass, and transferred her mind to Anya, who happened to be present. By bringing her consciousness to the surface, she is able to communicate with C.C., and Anya's consciousness is taken over, causing her to suffer from memory loss.

About the Ability

Her original aptitude for Geass was low, so her Geass ability only narrowly avoids the death of her body. Since there are no depictions of her possessing anyone other than Anya, it is unlikely she could move between bodies as a spirit. If she had a higher aptitude and awakened it while still alive, she might have been able to take over the consciousness of others while remaining physically present, but having the death of her body as the trigger for its manifestation is far too severe.

Geass Ability Ranking: #14 "Shin Hyuuga Shining"

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

GEASS: Commanding the Death of a Loved One

This ability allows Shin to use Geass on loved ones, ordering their deaths. However, the conditions for full activation are that the target must understand the concept of death and that Shin himself must love the target. Akito, who was a child at the time and did not understand death, and Layla, the object of his hatred, could not be Geassed. However, Akito, who received Geass in an incomplete form, was influenced to choose life by "living in order to die."

About the Ability

This is a twisted, full-blown yandere Geass born from a desire to believe that "death = salvation" due to complicated family circumstances. While the ability is driven by pure desire and is far from user-friendly, it can be said that Shin's human qualities were exceptional, as he was able to use it to his advantage and attain a high position within Britannia despite being Japanese.

Geass Ability Ranking: #13 "C.C."

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Beloved Geass

This is the Geass C.C. possessed before becoming a Code User. It is a Geass that is loved by everyone. At first, she received unconditional love and spent happy times, but she gradually lost sight of true love and began to trust only the Sisters, who are immune to Geass. However, the sister forces a code upon him, dooming him to immortality.

About the Ability

This power can easily make one king if used in a dominant manner, but since it does not rob one of their ego or have any coercive powers, some people may kill others out of love, like "Shin Hyuuga Shining." Some may even transcend love and even hatred, becoming destined to do so. To put it bluntly, I think it can be described as "the ability to one day be stabbed." It's hard to say whether it was a good thing or a bad thing that C.C. had no intention of doing so...

Geass Ability Ranking #12: "Orpheus Zevon"

Geass: Transforming into Another's Form

Geass is an ability that transforms into another's form, but it doesn't actually transform into another's form; it simply interferes with the other person's brain and makes them perceive it that way. Therefore, it has no effect when used through a camera or microphone.

About the Ability

Because it allows the user to transform into other people, it can be said to be a Geass that excels in scheming and deceit. However, it is not a compulsive Geass, and its effectiveness is lost when passed through a machine, so its usefulness is limited. However, as seen in Lelouch's use of Geass on Guilford, it is believed to be highly effective against those who are loyal to or have deep feelings for a specific person. A lieutenant colonel from another work...

Geass Ability Ranking #11: Clara Lanfranc

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass of Manipulation

A Geass user who appeared in Code Geass: Oz the Twin Eyes. By shouting the name of a person she sees, she can physically deprive them of freedom and control them at will. She was dispatched by the Geass Order to play the role of Lelouch's younger sister. If she couldn't see them or if she got the name wrong, the Geass wouldn't activate. She was shot and killed by a disguised Orpheus, who exploited the Geass's blind spot. As a result, Rolo was dispatched to replace her.

About the Ability

This ability is well-suited for assassinations, allowing her to kill someone while making it appear like a suicide. It appears she actually assassinated those who got in the way of the Order. It wouldn't activate if she got the name wrong, and since she needed to know the name to activate it, she had a Death Note-like oath that prevented her from using it on someone she'd just met. While it allows the user to control the target at will, it requires a process and cannot be used on someone the user has just met, so it seems useless outside of assassination.

Geass Ability Ranking #10: "The Child of the Sacred Order Appearing in Episode 14 of R2: Geass Hunt"

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass of Manipulation

This child appears in episode 16 of Code Geass R2, "Geass Hunt." Like Clara Lanfranc, this ability is believed to allow him to manipulate targets at will. He manipulates members of the Black Knights into fighting each other, but is easily killed by Rolo, who arrives, so details are unknown. Since he was able to use Geass even on their first encounter, it is thought to be a superior ability, unlike Clara Lanfranc, and does not require calling out the target's name.

About the Ability

While similar to Clara Lanfranc's ability, it does not require calling out the target's name. It is believed that visual contact is required, but since he appears and disappears so quickly, nothing else is known.

Geass Ability Ranking: 9th Place: Jeremiah Gottwald

Geass Canceller

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

This ability was accidentally created by the Geass Order after Jeremiah Gottwald, also known as Orange, suffered a terrible fate due to Zero. Similar to Rolo's, this barrier-type Geass cancels Geass abilities and can also be released if Geass is affecting someone's memories. It automatically activates if Geass is applied to the user. In the story, he accidentally released Shirley's Geass, triggering a tragic event, while also saving Anya, who was bound by Geass.

About the Ability

This ability is a nemesis of Geass users. Unlike normal Geass, an inverted blue marker appears when activated. A similar marker also appears on Layla, who appears in Akito the Exiled, which I believe is because her Geass is intended for salvation. It may have manifested from her desire to save those whose lives, including herself, have been ruined by Geass. It's not the will of God (the staff) to somehow release Shirley's Geass...probably.

Geass Ability Ranking #8: Rolo Lamperouge

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass of Absolute Stop

This is a barrier-type Geass that stops the perceived time of living beings within the barrier. However, since it does not stop time, it cannot stop incoming bullets. It is a high-risk Geass that also stops the user's own heart while in use.

About the Ability

This extremely powerful Geass is useful in KMF battles, assassinations, and infiltration missions in real life. Looking at its abilities alone, it would rank highly. However, the cost is enormous. It can deepen and go out of control, and the moment it becomes constantly active, it's highly likely that the heart will stop. Since it's been used since childhood, it's a time bomb-like Geass that can go out of control at any time, so it's ranked this high. It seems like there's no escaping its fate of death.

Geass Ability Ranking #7: "Marie Bell Mel Britannia"

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass of Absolute Obedience

Geass robs the target of their self-awareness, turning them into a puppet obedient to their commands. Unlike Lelouch's Geass, self-awareness does not return even after commands are executed, so they cannot act without orders.

About the ability

In terms of turning people into complete puppets, it surpasses Lelouch's Geass, which can only issue one command at a time. However, since he lacks self-awareness, he must issue commands each time. Furthermore, it is difficult to exploit ordinary people who have blended into society, as Lelouch did when he helped the Black Knights at the beginning of R2.

Geass Ability Ranking #6: Bismarck Waldstein

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass: Reading the Near Future

This Geass allows the user to visually perceive the target's near future. Its true value is demonstrated in close combat and KMF battles. Combined with Bismarck's piloting skills, he reigned supreme among the Knights of the Round. However, he was unable to counter attacks that were unavoidable even when known or coming from blind spots. Suzaku, boosted by the Lancelot Albion's advanced capabilities and Geass, was unable to keep up and was shot down.

About the Ability

This ability is unparalleled in combat, but since the time it takes to see the near future and the time it takes to react to it are considered separate entities, Bismarck's ability to see and react to rapidly changing battle situations is highly advanced. While this ability is unparalleled in one-on-one combat, he was unable to keep up with movements that exceeded human reaction times. The combination of thought and reflexes may be the strongest.

Geass Ability Ranking: 5th Place: Mao

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass: Hearing the Mind of Others

This ability allows the user to read the mind of others through audio. By concentrating, the power of this ability can be strengthened, making it a natural enemy for those who excel in psychological and intellectual warfare, especially those like Lelouch. However, overuse of his powers has deepened them, and he finds himself constantly hearing the inner thoughts of those around him.

About the Ability

In addition to being able to predict all sorts of strategies in advance, he is also adept at using threats and psychological attacks that tap into trauma. Due to the nature of his powers, he is virtually incapable of being trapped himself, making it the most powerful form of psychological warfare. However, since he is essentially under constant psychological attack, the stress he experiences is extremely high, causing him to become mentally unstable and unable to behave socially. It's perhaps only natural that he would show an abnormal attachment to C.C., who is unaffected by his powers, just as C.C. once did, relying on the Sisters.

Geass Ability Ranking: 4th Place: Charles zi Britannia

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Ability to Alter Memories

This ability allows the user to alter the target's memories, and the degree of this ability can be finely adjusted. It can seal away specific memories, instill trauma, induce mental illness, or even create an entirely different personality. However, it does not appear to have the same compulsive power as other Geass, and there are cases where individuals, such as the mysterious Julius Kingsley who appeared in Euro Britannia and Nunnally, resist and overcome the Emperor's Geass.

About the Ability

It is a powerful Geass with variable intensity, and its deepening ability suggests it has been used extensively in the past. However, since the Emperor's ultimate goal is to create a "kind world without lies," this ability to smear lies around others reveals his ego, which is that while it's unavoidable for him to lie, he doesn't want others to lie to him. It's perhaps no surprise that Lelouch dismisses it, saying, "That's a world that's kind to me!"

Geass Ability Ranking #3: "Lie"

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass of Absolute Obedience

This is the audio version of Lelouch's Geass, possessed by the protagonist of the video game "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion LOSTCOLORS." It issues commands to anyone who hears it, ensuring they are carried out. It also shares the same characteristic of only being able to be used once on the same person. Naturally, it has no effect on those who cannot hear the voice, and it has no effect on voices transmitted through a machine.

About the Ability

It's almost as easy to use as Lelouch's Geass, and Rai himself possesses Lelouch's intelligence and Suzaku's physical abilities. You're kidding me! Compared to Lelouch's Geass, if it were to go out of control and become constantly active, I think Lelouch's Geass would be the winner.

Geass Ability Ranking #2: Lelouch Lamperouge

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass of Absolute Obedience

This ability allows the user to issue commands to anyone who looks into his eyes, ensuring that they are carried out. While Geass cannot be used through a visual image, it is possible to indirectly cast Geass by reflecting something in a mirror. However, its effective range is approximately 270 meters, and it can generally only be used once on the same target. Therefore, once issued, the command cannot be canceled.

About the Ability

Lelouch, arguably the ultimate intellect, wields this Geass more than any other force in the Code Geass universe, bringing about great change. While he has performed miracles such as stealing Villetta's Sutherland and single-handedly rescuing the Black Knights in the "Orange Incident," he has also brought about tragedies such as the massacre of Euphemia and the death of Shirley due to a Geass gone out of control.

Geass Ability Ranking #1: "Layla Malcal"

Source: Code Geass ©SUNRISE/PROJECT GEASS

Geass: Connecting Spirits with Others

Layla Malcal, the heroine of Akito the Exiled, technically has the ability of "Geass Fragments," not Geass. Since it hasn't fully manifested, the details are unclear, but I believe its power is similar to telepathy, similar to the Brain Raid System in the story, or biosensors or quantum bursts in other works.

About the Ability

Compared to other Geass, this Geass has a unique "salvation" aspect, a Geass for deepening mutual understanding, and ultimately, Akito was able to come to an understanding with his nemesis, his brother. I believe that Layla's own wish was the reason why Akito the Exiled ended with a satisfying conclusion, unusual for a Code Geass story.

Perhaps it was an ability unique to a spin-off work

Believing in others and being trusted by them was what Lelouch lacked most in the main story. If someone like Ougi had believed in Zero, Zero Requiem might not have happened. Considering the constant misunderstandings in the main Code Geass, I think this is the strongest Geass in terms of creating possibilities. However, since the misunderstandings themselves are a key part of the fun of the main story of Code Geass, it might not be practical to use this ability in the story's structure.

Geass User Ranking Summary

This ranking is based on my own personal opinions, but what do you think? When I watch other robot anime, I can't help but feel that Layla's Geass has potential. The movie Code Geass: Oudou is currently in theaters, and with the new series starting, I can't help but be excited!
