Bun-Al's Most Popular Character Ranking: #1: Shusei Tokuda
First up is Shusei Tokuda, the overwhelming favorite! He's the tutorial author, and along with the other early authors, he's one of the first people to appear in the library. His weapon is a bow. While he's certainly talented and hardworking, he's unassuming and unremarkable, which worries him. He also hates being constantly nagged by fellow student of Ozaki, Kyoka Izumi, and is somewhat of a contrarian and cynical character.
Detailed Profile
Mental state: "slightly unstable," literary preference: "pure literature," hobby: sewing.
Tokuda Shusei as a Literary Master
His representative works include "Arakure" and "Mold." His style is characterized by what is known as naturalism.
Bun-Al Popular Character Ranking: No. 2 - Takiji Kobayashi
Next up is Takiji Kobayashi. He's also extremely popular. He's a young man who was once pursued as a rebel. Perhaps because of this, he can appear critical and cynical, but his true kindness is apparent to those he trusts. Due to his past experiences, he dislikes political power and seems to have mixed feelings about this incident, but he has unyielding feelings about literature, and he cooperates with the librarian.
Detailed Profile
He is mentally unstable. His representative works include "The Crab Cannery Ship" and "Party Life." His literary leanings are pure literature, his faction is proletarian, and his hobby is "eating lots of ohagi (rice dumplings)." His voice actor is Katsuyuki Konishi.
Takiji Kobayashi as a Literary Master
A leading author of Japanese proletarian literature. His masterpiece, "The Crab Cannery Ship," is well-known, but this work made him a suspect among the Tokko Police (an organization tasked with cracking down on dangerous ideas). After being arrested by a spy, he was brutally tortured to death.
Bun-Al Popular Character Ranking: 3rd Place: Shiga Naoya
Shiga Naoya is also extremely popular, enjoying a following almost on par with that of Kobayashi Takiji. A member of the Shirakaba faction, also known as the "Prince Group," Shiga Naoya has a straightforward personality and doesn't sweat the small stuff. However, he is particular about novels. Furthermore, he has a loyal and manly side to people he truly respects. He also often bumps into things due to not paying attention to what's ahead.
Detailed Profile
His mentality is "stability." His representative works include "At Kinosaki" and "A Dark Night's Journey." His literary preference is "pure literature." His hobby is "riding bicycles." His voice actor is Tomoaki Maeno.
Naoya Shiga as a Literary Master
Naoya Shiga was a member of the Shirakaba school. He was a bourgeoisie and a true son of a wealthy family. His often risky remarks in the game and his tendency to not pay attention to the road ahead are based on his own extraordinary anecdotes. He once cycled backwards (?) and fell into a rice field, and was hit by a Yamanote Line train (!). He also apparently once ate raw longhorn beetle larvae. His seasonal voiceover includes the line, "I wonder if that insect would taste good if I ate it?"
Bun-Al Popular Character Ranking: 4th Place: Dazai Osamu
Dazai Osamu is the rarest character in Bun-Al. He doesn't appear often. He's also quite popular. In Bun-Al, Dazai Osamu pretends to be a cheerful, upbeat character, but deep down he's just a narcissistic attention seeker. He often criticizes others from a condescending perspective, but when it's time to flatter, he's quick to do so. He also never accepts being told something inconvenient. He loves fashion. He greatly admires Ryunosuke Akutagawa and is deeply troubled by the fact that he was unable to win the Akutagawa Prize during his lifetime.
Detailed Profile
His representative works include "No Longer Human" and "Shayo." His weapon is a blade, and his literary inclination is pure literature. He is mentally unstable, and his voice actor is Yuichi Nakamura.
Dazai Osamu as a Literary Master
Dazai Osamu is a man of countless anecdotes. He left behind many masterpieces, including the familiar textbook classic "Run, Melos." Dazai was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize the first and second time around, but was unsuccessful. He wasn't even nominated for the third time around. He held a strong grudge against Yasunari Kawabata, who was a judge at the time, and even wrote that he would "stab" him. He also wrote two letters, one four meters long and one ten meters long, to Haruo Sato, a judge and his mentor.
Bun-Al Popular Character Ranking: 6th Place: Shimazaki Toson
Shimazaki Toson (Shimazaki Toson) has a somewhat fragile appearance, often with his eyes downcast. Perhaps due to his tragic past, his eyes resemble those of a dead fish. He seems to understand his own gloomy personality, and is loyal to those who are kind to him. He is also an otaku who is not satisfied unless he pursues his interests to the fullest, to the point that his enthusiasm is intimidating to those around him.
Detailed Profile
His weapon is a bow, his mentality is normal, and his hobbies are interviews. His literary leanings are pure literature. His voice actor is Shinnosuke Tachibana.
Shimazaki Toson as a Literary Master
Shimazaki Toson is well-known in textbooks. His most famous works include "Before the Dawn," "Hakai," and "Shinsei." While he is portrayed as a naturalist writer in this game, Toson originally started out as a poet. He later became a leading naturalist writer.
What is his tragic past?
The "strange past" mentioned in the game's profile can be explained in various ways, but it is related to the "melancholy inherited from my parents" that Toson frequently mentions in his writings. One line in the game also mentions "melancholy etched in my blood," which is thought to refer to the mad deaths of Toson's father and eldest sister, his adulterous affair with his niece (Shimazaki Komako), and even his father's affair with his sister. This past may explain why Toson's lines are often self-deprecating.
Bun-Al's Most Popular Character Ranking: 7th Place: Kitahara Hakushu
Kitahara Hakushu (Kitahara Hakushu) was not only a poet but also a writer of children's songs and other works. He was surrounded by many people, including his students. However, he seemed completely indifferent. Furthermore, he had a rich boyish personality, and was unsatisfied unless he was the best at everything. Surprisingly, however, he was also a very hard worker.
Detailed Profile
Weapon: "guns," mentality: "normal," faction: "Kitahara Clan." Hobbies: "absorbing various forms of expression." Voice actor: Natsuki Hanae.
Kitahara Hakushu as a Literary Master
His signature work is "Paulownia Flowers." He is also well known today as a children's song lyricist, leaving behind works such as "Rainfall," "Cradle Song," and "This Road." While he also appears to smoke in the game, Kitahara Hakushu appears to have been a heavy smoker, smoking a dozen Shikishima cigarettes a day. He even smoked 200 cigarettes a day, apparently throwing away one-third of them because "the first one tastes the best."
