A Mysterious Man Washed Down the River

Kicked out of an orphanage and on the verge of starvation, Nakajima Atsushi finds himself on the banks of a river in Yokohama determined to survive at all costs, even if it meant committing robbery.
However, he can't help but notice a mysterious man swept away by the river and decides to help him.

Suicide Maniac

The man is Dazai Osamu, a suicide maniac. Although he initially complains that he's been interrupted in his suicide attempt, he treats him to a meal as compensation for the inconvenience.

Armed Detective Agency

Doppo Kunikida, who treats Dazai to a meal, tells him that the two are the Armed Detective Agency, a supernatural organization that solves cases beyond the reach of the police. Upon hearing about the Armed Detective Agency's current job of capturing a "man-eating tiger," Atsushi reveals that he is being chased by a tiger, and that an orphanage he was attacked by was in financial difficulty and he was forced to leave to reduce the number of mouths to feed.

Beast Under the Moon

Dazai decides to use Atsushi as bait to lure the tiger out.
Dazai takes Atsushi to a remote factory and tells him that he himself has the supernatural power to transform into a tiger.
Seeing the moon, Atsushi transforms into a tiger and attacks Dazai, but is defeated by Dazai's "No Longer Human" ability and loses consciousness. When Atsushi wakes up, Dazai tells him about his ability, "Beast Under the Moon," and tells him that he will be made an employee of the Armed Detective Agency.

How to Deal with Your Awareness of Your Supernatural Powers

Thanks to Dazai's help, Atsushi has finally been able to live a normal life in Yokohama, living in the Armed Detective Agency's employee dormitory.
However, he feels unable to control his supernatural powers and is unfit to work for the Armed Detective Agency, so he tells Dazai he's thinking about finding a regular job.
Dazai takes Atsushi out into the city to try to find him a job.

Hostage & Persuasion!?

On their way to a job placement, the two encounter Kunikida. Upon hearing that a bomber has holed up inside the Armed Detective Agency, they head to the scene to deal with the situation.
The perpetrator has a personal grudge against the agency and has taken Naomi, a high school student working there, hostage, demanding that the president be released. Atsushi, whose identity remains a mystery to the perpetrator, disguises himself as a passing newspaper delivery man and attempts to persuade him.

Kunikida's Abilities

While Atsushi distracts the perpetrator, Kunikida uses his ability to materialize what he writes in his notebook, known as "Doppo Ginkaku," to create an air gun and launch an attack.
However, the captured criminal accidentally pressed the bomb's switch, and Atsushi instinctively threw himself over the bomb to prevent the explosion from spreading.

Employment Exam

However, the entire incident was part of Atsushi's employment exam, and the president had to decide whether to defend Atsushi, a tiger being pursued by the ward.

Tanizaki Junichiro, who was playing the role of the bomber, and his sister Naomi were also in on the job and had been complicit in the employment exam.

No Room for Worry!

Dazai told Atsushi that if he didn't join the detective agency, he'd be jobless, homeless, and without acquaintances, and would once again have to live as a wanted tiger. In the end, Dazai had no choice but to join.

A Very Difficult Question

Atsushi passes the Armed Detective Agency exam and is successfully hired.
During the conversation, they decide to play a quiz to guess the previous jobs of their seniors. Dazai's past is the only one that no one has ever guessed before, and the first person to guess correctly will receive a prize of 700,000 yen.

First Job!

Meanwhile, a beautiful woman visits the Armed Detective Agency, and they are hired to drive away suspicious people who appear to be smugglers entering and leaving the company building.

Atsushi is nervous about his first job, but Kunikida hands him a photo and tells him to run away if he sees him. The person in the photo is Ryunosuke Akutagawa, a member of the Port Mafia and a person with psychic powers.

Port Mafia

Junichiro Tanizaki, Naomi, and Atsushi are assigned to guard the building, and when they are led to a dead end, the client, Ichiyo Higuchi, reveals her true identity as a member of the Port Mafia and contacts Akutagawa to let her know that she has cornered the three.
First, Tanizaki, enraged by Naomi's sniper attack, unleashes his supernatural power, "The Makioka Sisters," to conceal his presence and launch an attack on Higuchi.

Ryuunosuke Akutagawa

However, Akutagawa arrives and uses his supernatural power, "Rashomon," to knock Tanizaki down.

Akutagawa's goal is to capture Atsushi, a were-tiger with a 7 billion yen bounty on his head through illegal channels. Tanizaki and his team are hurt, believing they have been caught up in the crossfire due to their presence.

Akutagawa's Supernatural Powers

Even with one leg lost, Atsushi uses his supernatural powers to resist and finally confronts Akutagawa, but Dazai arrives and uses his "No Longer Human" power to neutralize his powers. Dazai, familiar with Akutagawa and his team's methods and secret affairs, is a former member of the Port Mafia.

Bounty

With Dazai's help, Atsushi manages to escape Akutagawa and wakes up in a room at the detective agency, lying in bed.
Hearing the screams of Tanizaki, who was being treated by Yosano next to him, Kunikida, in a state of panic, reveals that he has a 7 billion bounty.

Black Lizard

After seeing the remains of a factory attacked by the Port Mafia's Black Lizard, Atsushi fears that his presence could threaten the detective agency. He calls his enemy, Higuchi, and tells him to stay away from the agency, saying, "I'm quitting the detective agency, so don't bother me," before leaving the agency. Instead of targeting Atsushi, Higuchi gathers the Black Lizards and requests that the Ten-Man Commander, Tachihara Michizō and Gin, and the Hundred-Man Commander, Hirotsu Ryurō, attack the agency.

Extra Work

Atsushi immediately rushes to the detective agency, only to find the employees fighting the Black Lizards unfazed. Kunikida and his team are shaken by the sudden attack, which will disrupt their schedules, and they'll have to deal with increased workloads, including repairing broken equipment and dealing with complaints from neighbors.

Encouragement

Sighing, Kunikida berates Atsushi for not being there when he was busy.
Kunikida's words of criticism show Atsushi that it's okay for him to be there, and tears naturally flow.
Even though he's being teased, Atsushi feels a sense of fulfillment.

Edogawa Ranpo

While cleaning up after an attack by the Port Mafia's "Black Lizard," Atsushi is ordered to escort Edogawa Ranpo, a mysterious detective who doesn't even know how to ride a train.
Edogawa, a man highly respected even by Kunikida, heads to the scene of a murder to demonstrate his superhuman powers of "super deduction."

Murder

Found lying at the riverside where the murder occurred, shot by a bullet, is a female subordinate of Detective Minoura. Edogawa, who has recently been investigating political corruption and the Port Mafia, attempts to solve the case, but is dismissed, saying that the Armed Detective Agency's assistance is not necessary.

Dazai Floats Down from the River Again

As he investigates the scene, Dazai, who had attempted to commit suicide by drowning, accidentally washes up. He sees the body of his female subordinate and concludes that the method of murder is similar to that of the Port Mafia, but because the face is not smashed as is typical of the Mafia, it must be the work of a different group.

Case Solved

Detective Minoura urges Edogawa to go ahead and uncover the full story of a case with no clues. Edogawa, after thinking for a few seconds, points to Officer Sugimoto, who was investigating the scene with him, as the culprit.
After pointing out that Officer Sugimoto's gun was missing three bullets, Edogawa drew his gun and attempted to attack him, but was quickly subdued.

Reason for Murder

While investigating a high-ranking politician's corruption, a female subordinate came across evidence. The politician then attempted to have Officer Sugimoto, a spy within the police, kill her. Officer Sugimoto warned her and tried to persuade her to withdraw the evidence, but failed. He risked his own life to stop her, but accidentally fired his gun and killed her.

Cover-up

He called the high-ranking politician for advice, and then fired the remaining two bullets to destroy the evidence and frame the crime as the Port Mafia's doing. However, because Officer Sugimoto was in a relationship with her, Edogawa could not bring himself to take a hit, as the Mafia would have done.

Edogawa saw through the whole picture and successfully persuaded Officer Sugimoto to reveal the location of the disk containing the evidence.

Edogawa Ranpo's Abilities

Atsushi was impressed by Edogawa's abilities, but Dazai explained that Edogawa had no supernatural powers and was simply a human who solved cases with his exceptional powers of deduction.
He continued, saying that it was precisely because he didn't have supernatural powers that everyone recognized Edogawa's abilities.
Having discovered a new side to the Armed Detective Agency, Atsushi returned home with Edogawa and Dazai at dusk.

Two people who don't get along!?

Kunikida arrived at the detective agency 10 seconds earlier than usual and opened the door to find Atsushi, looking anxious and asking for help. Atsushi pointed to Dazai, who was high on mushrooms growing in the mountain behind the agency.
Kunikida prioritizes sorting his morning papers, but when Dazai gets in the way, he loses his cool and punches him.
Watching this, Atsushi wonders why these two, who seem so incompatible, are teaming up.

Blue Angel

A series of disappearances of tourists visiting Yokohama has occurred, and Atsushi accompanies Dazai and Kunikida to investigate.
Hearing from illegal informant Rokuzo Taguchi that the tip came from the "Blue Angel," Atsushi takes a taxi driven by a former informant and expert on the streets of Yokohama. Following the tip, he heads to the abandoned hospital, the culprit's hideout.

Trap

While investigating the abandoned hospital, Kunikida finds university professor Nobuko Sasaki, nearly drowning in a tank. Based on Nobuko's information, Kunikida learns that there are other captives, and heads off to rescue them.
However, Kunikida's efforts were not enough, and the missing persons were killed when toxic gas was sprayed into the room where they were being held.

The Culprit

Kunikida visited the taxi driver and told him that he was the kidnapper.
The driver had gassed the tourists he picked up in his taxi, robbed them of their clothes, disguised himself as the victims, and checked into a hotel, where he was caught on surveillance camera footage.
The reason for the kidnapping was to use them for organ trafficking, but the driver was merely tempted, and offered to provide protection at the Armed Detective Agency in exchange for testifying.

Attack by the Port Mafia

Just as the driver began to negotiate, Kunikida and his companions were suddenly attacked by the Port Mafia. Among the kidnappers was someone connected to the Port Mafia.
Kunikida used his supernatural power, "Doppo Ginkaku," to fire a flash grenade, but unfortunately found himself confronted by Akutagawa.

The Blue King

Using his cunning, Kunikida succeeds in coercing Akutagawa into backing down, but he sternly tells him not to come back. When he visits the building used by the organ trafficking organization, it's already empty. The building is the site of a terrorist known as the "Blue King," whom Kunikida had previously cornered, who detonated a bomb, taking five police officers, including Taguchi's father.
