Berserk of Gluttony, an anime scheduled to air from fall 2023, is a dark fantasy anime based on a novel serialized on Let's Become a Novelist! The protagonist's life changes, for better or worse, when a skill he thought was useless turns out to be an incredibly high-risk, high-reward skill. Despite being at the mercy of that skill, he becomes invincible. In this article, we'd like to introduce the worldview of this work and what kind of work it is!

This is a world where innate skills are everything!

Manga Cover

In this work, superiority or inferiority is essentially determined by the skills one is born with. Those with good skills can gain strength, wealth, and fame, but those born with useless skills are condemned to a life at the bottom of society. The protagonist, Fate Graphite, was also forced to live at the bottom of society because of the useless skill "Gluttony."

What is the protagonist Fate's "Gluttony" skill?

Fate Controlled by Madness

The "Gluttony" skill was thought to be a useless skill that simply made you hungry, but in fact, it steals the abilities and skills of those you kill. The more you kill, the more your abilities increase. However, if you don't kill, you will be overcome by intense hunger, and in the worst case scenario, you may go insane and be absorbed into the skill. Furthermore, the stronger the skill, the more powerful it becomes, making it a high-risk skill that endlessly seeks out even stronger souls.

Sin Skill Owners and Their Exclusive Weapons

Wrath of Myne

Fate's skills are called Sin Skills, and there are characters who possess the same Sin Skills. Currently, Myne possesses the "Wrath" skill, and Eris possesses the "Lust" skill. Additionally, there are Sin Weapons, which are essentially exclusive equipment for Sin Skill owners. Sin Weapons have their own wills, and while some are cooperative, like Fate's black sword Greed, others may be at odds with their wielder.

Detailed Settings for Fate's Gluttony Skill and the Black Sword Greed

Greed Transformation

Fate's Gluttony skill traps the souls of those he kills and devours forever, forcing them to endure the hellish torment of eternal suffering even after death. Furthermore, the stronger the souls he devours, the greater the power he gains, but each time he absorbs this power, he feels an intense sense of elation and insanity. His special weapon, the Black Sword Greed, can transform into different forms and unlock various abilities by offering the stats Fate gains from his Gluttony skill.

The Royal Capital of Seyfert is protected by the Holy Knights!

Despised Fate

In the royal capital of Seyfart, knights known as Holy Knights maintain peace. They are apparently subordinates directly to the king, and each has their own territory. In times of emergency, they may even launch expeditions to defeat monsters. However, the Holy Knights have a strong sense of elitism, and because each individual possesses their own abilities, they are often hostile towards those without. They often impose oppressive measures, and some even engage in criminal activity.

There Are Honest Holy Knights Among Them!

Roxy Tojo

While many Holy Knights become arrogant due to their obsession with skills, there are also honest and upright Holy Knights who put the people first, such as the heroine Roxy Heart and the battle-hardened Holy Knight Aaron Barbatos, who later becomes Fate's stepfather. However, there are factions among the Holy Knights, and these upstanding Holy Knights seem to be hated.

A world that is completely unkind to the powerless!

The Unrepentant Villager

Our protagonist, Fate, was banished from his village after his father's death due to a useless skill. Not only is the powerless discriminated against in a world where skills are paramount, but monsters that attack villages lurk nearby, and the constant danger of nearby villages makes the people's hearts somewhat hardened. Furthermore, if such a remote village were to be attacked by monsters, there would be no one to help, and destruction would be inevitable. They are extremely unkind to the powerless.

Among the monsters is a powerful enemy known as the "Crown"!

Crown Monster

Monsters known as "monsters" exist in the world and threaten people's lives. Among them, however, rare occurrences include higher-level monsters known as "crowns." "Crown" monsters have their own unique individual identification names and possess stats far superior to those of their kind. "Crown" monsters are born due to the accumulation of hatred, which represents hostility from enemies. The strength and accumulation of "hate" leads to the emergence of more powerful monsters, and this apparently applies not only to monsters but also to humans.

Beings that transcend the "E Realm," the limit of human status.

E Realm

Humans other than Fate gain experience points by defeating monsters and powering up, but there is a limit for ordinary people, reaching a maximum of 999999999. Anything above that level enters the E Realm, which is inaccessible to ordinary humans and makes attacks from beings that have not reached the E Realm ineffective. Only special beings, such as those who possess the Deadly Sin Skills or Celestial Dragons, can reach the E Realm, but even humans can reach it if they trust the Deadly Sin Skill holder. The "E" here is an exponential notation used in Excel, giving it a sci-fi feel that is out of place in a fantasy setting.

Is the Lost Ancient Civilization Science Fiction, Not Fantasy?

Mecha Angel

Located in the southern part of the continent, Gallia is now a barren land den of monsters, but it once housed a highly developed civilization that has since been destroyed. While the civilization itself is gone, relics remain scattered throughout the area, including ancient weapons such as the Mecha Angel. Research on these relics is conducted in the military district of the royal capital, where a research facility for an advanced civilization, unusual for a fantasy world, is located. One of the characters, Myne, possesses the "Wrath" Sin skill, and it's implied that she existed before Gallia's destruction.
