Featured Scene from Episode 1: "That Tomorrow Never Came"
This flashback scene is the root of Jintan's trauma. It depicts what happened at the secret base on the day Menma died. When Anaru asks, "You like Menma, don't you?" and Poppo cheers him on, Jintan, embarrassed and shy, blurts out, "Who's calling me that ugly?" Menma, who I thought would cry, just laughs embarrassedly.
I've ruined the peace...
Afterwards, Jintan feels embarrassed and runs home. He thinks he can just apologize tomorrow. But that tomorrow never comes. After Jintan leaves, his father tells him that Menma died in an accident. Having completely disrupted the peace, everyone becomes estranged.
Featured Scene from Episode 2: "Let's Play Nokemon Together"
This is a scene that many people have probably experienced: everyone playing Nokemon together. Jintan reunites with Poppo at the secret base. Thinking that his promise to Menma was to catch a rare Nokemon, Jintan and Poppo play a nostalgic Nokemon from generations past. However, this rare Nokemon was only obtainable through trading. Perhaps it's something like Politoad or Slowking in terms of generation?
The Three Return to the Past
Unable to do it alone, Jintan and Poppo head to Anaru's house to try and get a Rare Nokemon. Poppo starts reading Bobobo, so Anaru and Jintan decide to get the Rare Nokemon together. All in all, they have a blast, and for a brief moment, the three of them seem to have rekindled their friendship.
Featured Scene from Episode 3: "Have You Seen Menma?"
Everyone ends up at a get-together planned by Poppo for Menma. Even Yukiatsu, who hadn't expected to show up, joins in, much to Menma's delight. Then, Yukiatsu blurts out, "I saw Menma." Menma and Poppo then go looking for Menma, but when Jintan is left behind, Yukiatsu says, "Looks like you weren't the only one who saw Menma." This is a significant scene from Yukiatsu, who had been acting suspiciously from the start. Who would have thought that would happen...?
Featured Scene from Episode 4: "The Twisted Man"
This is one of Anohana's most shocking scenes, leaving a huge impact on Yukiatsu's character. Yukiatsu, who had been giving off a dangerous vibe up until this point, is provoked by Jintan through Tsuruko's schemes. Although he acts cool and unconcerned, he's actually quite shaken up inside, and that upset leads Yukiatsu to take unexpected action.
Menma Appears?
Jintan, Menma, Anaru, Tsuruko, and Poppo gather at their secret base. Shortly after their coffee break, Menma and Poppo spot Menma in the fields at night. Everyone chases after him, but Tsuruko seems to know Menma's true identity. Menma's true identity is Yukiatsu. Yukiatsu believed he was responsible for Menma's death, which caused him to obsess over Menma more than anyone else. This led him to dress up as Menma and run around the mountains and fields.
Featured Scene from Episode 5: "He'd Be a Handsome Guy If Menma Hadn't Been Involved"
Anaru's been having a rough time with her friends lately, so she couldn't refuse an invitation to a group date. However, when she sneaks out of the date, the man she was with tries to forcefully take her to a hotel. Was it a coincidence that saved her from a dire situation? Yukiatsu happened to be passing by.
A Yukiatsu Feels Sympathy
Yukiatsu is intelligent and athletic, but lacks confidence in his physical strength. He calls out to everyone and waves them away. Yukiatsu, who likes Menma but can't get her to notice him, feels sympathy for Anaru, who likes Jintan but can't get her to notice him. He doesn't seem to dislike her unreserved nature. Yukiatsu jokingly asks, "Would you like to go out with me?", but is turned down.
Featured Scene from Episode 6: "Jintan Shows His Manliness"
Perhaps Menma's wish is a blaming himself for being a hikikomori. Thinking this, Jintan decides to go to school, but he feels so uncomfortable that he becomes self-conscious of the gazes of those around him. Furthermore, hikikomori's hearing is heightened, so they naturally pick up on the noises around them. However, the source of the rumors isn't Jintan, but Anaru.
Cool Jintan
Anaru was once almost taken to a love hotel, but the PTA saw them and misunderstood her. Upon receiving a message from Anaru that she didn't do it, Jintan couldn't help but stand up and defend Anaru, despite the awkwardness typical of a recluse. Anaru instinctively drags Jintan out of the school, but Anaru's smile has returned. This is a cool Jintan scene.
Featured Scene from Episode 7: "Shining Shining Jintan"
Menma has been suspicious of Jintan's late return home recently. In fact, he's been working part-time to cover the cost of the fireworks that will grant Menma's wish. Menma learns what Jintan is up to from a phone conversation with Anaru.
Cool Jintan
Menma tears up as he watches Jintan working at the construction site for her. Realizing that Jintan has always been thinking about Menma, he turns his light toward Jintan. "He's so cool... Shining bright Jintan," he says, watching over Jintan. This is a very cool scene, showing Jintan's caring devotion to his friends.
Featured Scene from Episode 8: "Don't Fight"
Yukiatsu investigates the silent phone call he and Tsuruko received from Jintan's house, and gets angry at Jintan for only talking about Menma. Unable to see Menma or believe her existence, Yukiatsu and Tsuruko express their anger, but Menma, seeing this, uses his diary to prove his existence.
What was written in the diary?
A new entry in the diary read, "Today, we played in the secret base with everyone who's grown up. No fighting allowed. The Super Peace Busters are always good friends." The handwriting was clearly Menma's, and Poppo and Anaru, who were skeptical of Yukiatsu and Tsuruko, had no choice but to believe that Menma was there. Yukiatsu immediately recognized Menma's handwriting and believed it. Why does Yukiatsu become so uncool when Menma is involved?
Featured Scene from Episode 9: "Poltergeist Menma"
Menma, now that everyone believes she's there, makes steamed buns and serves them to Jintan at his house. However, since no one can see her except Jintan, the scene is nothing short of a poltergeist phenomenon. From a viewer's perspective, this scene doesn't seem like a horror scene at all, but it is.
Featured Scene from Episode 10: "Menma Didn't Disappear"
After many twists and turns, the fireworks were completed and the launch date was set. Even so, Jintan still felt conflicted. If he granted Menma's wish, she would disappear. He wanted to stay with Menma, but Menma's wish was to pass on and be reborn.
Fireworks that Disappeared into the Sky
The fireworks continued to launch, ignoring the thoughts of everyone watching. These were meant to help Menma find peace. Jintan struggled until the very end. This was supposed to be his final farewell to Menma... But even after the fireworks were launched, Menma didn't disappear.
Featured Scene from the Final Episode: "I Found Menma"
Even after the fireworks, Menma didn't disappear. Everyone confessed that they had been trying to help Menma pass on to the afterlife not for Menma's sake, but for their own comfort, and they united to listen to Menma's story. However, in reality, Menma's wishes had almost all been fulfilled, and she was on the verge of fading. Jintan picked up Menma, who was on the verge of fading and could no longer stand on her own, and ran to the secret base.
It's Hide and Seek
By the time they arrived at the secret base, Menma was already out of Jintan's sight. Barely able to hear her voice, Menma said, "It's Hide and Seek," and, with the last of his strength, left a letter for everyone. Everyone ran through the mountains desperately searching for Menma, eventually finding the letter she had left behind. However, Jintan tearfully cried out that it wouldn't end until he found Menma.
I Found Menma
Everyone was crying and asking if it was okay, and Menma replied, "Yes, it is." Not only Jintan but everyone else heard this. And now, everyone could see Menma, who was supposedly only visible to Jintan. Having been found by everyone, Menma finally passed away with a smile. The final scene was also incredibly beautiful, and it's a scene that will become a tearjerker and become a wonderful memory of Anohana.
