Late one summer, Menma, Jintan's childhood friend, suddenly appears. He doesn't know why he's in front of him. "But I think I want my wish to be granted," he says, making a vague request. While this line seems really vague in the first episode, it might change your perspective after watching the entire series. It feels like this is where Anohana began.
Quote 3: Anaru is Anaru
Menma suddenly appears before Jintan, and while she may have grown up in appearance, she hasn't changed a bit on the inside. So she calls one of her childhood friends, Anjou Naruko, by her old nickname. That nickname is Anjou Naruko, or Anaru for short. Looking back, it's a ridiculous nickname, but back then I was young and didn't even know what Anaru meant. But Menma, still the same as back then, calls her Anaru Anaru without any embarrassment. I wonder how the voice actress felt about that.
Quote 4: But that tomorrow never came
Jintan had an indelible trauma. Five years ago, when Jintan was asked, "You like Menma, don't you?" at their secret base, he blurted out, "Who's calling me that ugly?" And with that, he ran away. He thought he could apologize tomorrow, but that tomorrow never came. Soon after, Menma died. If only he hadn't said those things then... This quote is heartbreaking, as those were his final words.
Quote 5: If there's a tomorrow, I think it's okay to apologize slowly.
Five years later, Menma's appearance was exactly the same as it was back then. Jintan, who suspected that the corpse was a manifestation of his delusion, couldn't find the right time to apologize for not apologizing then. Menma suddenly returns to the world and prays in front of Jintan's mother's Buddhist altar. At that moment, Menma utters a single word. It's a surreal scene of a dead Menma praying, but it's also very Menma-like.
Quote 7: Buster the False Peace
After a quarrel with Yukiatsu at a barbecue, Tsuruko somehow ends up at Jintan's house. Jintan has a bad feeling about this, but Tsuruko asks him for a favor. Later, when Anaru sees Jintan and Tsuruko together, she instinctively goes over to call out to them, but it seems like Tsuruko is up to something... This is a somewhat enigmatic quote.

After everyone believes in Menma's existence thanks to Menma's poltergeist-like proof, Yukiatsu asks with a serious look on his face, "Is she pretty?" Perhaps due to his past, he shyly replies, "I'd say she's pretty pretty..." Menma then punches Jintan, setting off a heartwarming poltergeist experience. However, Yukiatsu, still devoted to Menma, seems displeased by this sweet exchange, and after the two leave, he lashes out in frustration. Tsuruko, witnessing the scene, said one word.

At a rally to help Menma find peace, Yukiatsu suggests they put on a show. It's a reenactment of what happened at the secret base on the day Menma died.
