Have you heard of the wildly popular "7SEEDS," a unique manga among the many shojo manga out there? It's packed with romance, science fiction, and mystery, making it a highly engaging read. The long-awaited anime adaptation is coming in spring 2019, so why not take a look back at it now? This time, we'll be introducing the first heroine, Iwashimizu Natsu. We'll tell you about her journey, both her good and bad points! It takes about 5 minutes to read.
What is "7SEEDS"?
Long-running Manga
"7SEEDS" (Seven Seas) began serialization in the November 2001 issue of Bessatsu Shojo Comic (Shogakukan) and continued until the July 2017 issue (moving to Monthly Flowers (Shogakukan) in the June 2002 issue). It ran for approximately 16 years and was adapted into an anime two years after its serialization ended. Its popularity has not waned in those 16 years, and many people still rewatch it. This anime adaptation is available exclusively on Netflix, so it might be worth subscribing to.
This Manga is Amazing!
"This Manga is Amazing!" is so popular that it's almost as if it determines the next best-selling manga. In the 2018 edition, "7SEEDS" came in a respectable 10th place. While the anime adaptation may have had an effect, it certainly shows how much attention it's getting. Of the selected works, it has the longest serialization and was the first to start. So, while the illustrations are quite different, they stand out well (lol). If you see it, be sure to check it out.
The Large Number of Characters
There are twice as many characters as in this illustration, and even though they only have minor roles, they are all characters I feel a deep attachment to. Each character has their own strong feelings and unforgettable past, and each one is deeply moving. Although there are many characters, 7SEEDS is truly a work that allows you to get to know people deeply. Therefore, different characters interact with each other and even their personalities change. This is another very interesting aspect.
[7SEEDS] Who is Natsu Iwashimizu?
Main Character
The main character, Iwashimizu Natsu, has been appearing since the first volume. She's 16 years old, a Cancer, and blood type O. In her original world, she was bullied due to her introverted and passive personality, and almost always refused to go to school. She has a communication disorder and a lack of self-confidence, which makes her extremely unsociable. At first, she was so withdrawn that she couldn't even hold a conversation. She would think about things alone in her head. She would be so careful about what she said, worrying about whether people would dislike her, that she would lose her voice. That's how sensitive she is.
Suddenly, into survival
It all began with Natsu's mother preparing a hearty dinner. Even though it was just a normal day, she prepared all of Natsu's favorite foods, and then he went to sleep. Natsu remembers that his father and brother were smiling more than usual, but also looked a little lonely. They must have known it was their final goodbye. It shows what a loving family they were. When Natsu woke up, his second life would begin. This is the beginning of the "7SEEDS" project!
The 7SEEDS Project Begins
What is the "7SEEDS" Project?
A scientist from the original world predicted that "in the near future, a giant celestial body will fall to Earth, causing various disasters and leading to a similar situation as the extinction of the dinosaurs." Among various countermeasures, the government secretly devised the "7SEEDS" Project. This ambitious plan involves dividing individuals who meet numerous conditions into five teams and freezing them. Once a computer determines that the frozen bodies are suitable for human habitation, they will be thawed, leaving seeds for the future. It was a rough and ridiculous plan, but at the time, it was a desperate attempt. And Natsu was chosen.
Summer B Team
Natsu is a member of the Summer B Team. There are five teams named after the seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Summer. The Summer B Team is located near Nagasaki Prefecture and is made up of the most problematic members of the five teams. Originally, the group consisted of only four seasons, but then some started to argue that "people who have lived normal, pure-blooded lives tend to have a weak will to live," and so they're now considered a group of dropouts selected as a safety net, including those who are rebellious, have difficulty adapting to society, and tend to withdraw into their shells. The group is packed with some pretty quirky characters.
I can't fit in
At first, Natsu couldn't even bring himself to say he wanted to go to the bathroom. He would change his facial expressions and act strangely until someone noticed, trying to get his point across. Natsu spends his days being teased by Asai Semimaru, the delinquent on Team B. Natsu doesn't say anything back and just puts up with it, until he's finally scolded by their guide, Saotome Botan. In this harsh world, if you put up with it or are passive like Natsu, your death flag will quickly be raised. In fact, there were more flags than you could count on your fingers (lol). His inability to fit in with the team (and his refusal to try) was causing him a lot of trouble.
【7SEEDS】Natsu's Growth
Proactive
At first, Natsu was barely surviving, relying on the help of the other members. However, Botan's words motivate her to take action on her own initiative. She makes handmade baskets to be useful, and actively participates in discussions, trying to find clever things to say. Of course, her personality doesn't change immediately, but watching her gradually show her true Natsu side and live her life to the fullest will make you want to root for her. As usual, he continued to talk to himself until the very end (lol).
Thinking and acting for himself
Up until now, someone had always been by Natsu's side, leading the way. Of course, Natsu tried his best, but he had never made decisions, taken responsibility, or acted on his own. Alone in the underground shelter, he decided his own path and took on the challenge. His anxiety and trembling still lingered, but Natsu seemed to shine brightly at this moment. This is what they mean when they say, "Let your precious child travel." He has grown up so much.
The Language of Flowers
Hana Suegurono, a member of the Spring Team, always has a sharp gaze and is tomboyish, but when she talks to Natsu, she comes across as very calm and gentle. Perhaps this is due to Natsu's personality. It's probably due to Natsu's quiet and innocent reactions. By this time, she's no longer timid, but has become good at being considerate of others. Also, perhaps because she used to be so concerned about what others think, she has become more observant of those around her and contributes to the team. It's so satisfying, it almost tickles, when others notice and tell you your good points first. This is how Natsu continues to grow!
Loud Shout
This is the scene where Natsu, who never spoke to people or shared his opinions or thoughts, loudly announces that there's water. His voice cracks, his face is bright red, and his breathing is heavy. His heart is beating hard, but he seems to have a great sense of accomplishment. That little bit of courage has changed Natsu so much. This would probably never have happened if he hadn't participated in the "7SEEDS" project. In that sense, it's probably a good thing that he was able to participate.
Living Without Regrets
In our everyday lives, it's rare to think deeply about our lifestyle and life. Of course, we may have a life plan, but how deeply have we thought about the fundamental idea of living life to the fullest, like Natsu and the others? Natsu, being listless until now, probably never even considered it. In the world of "7SEEDS," parting means you can safely assume you'll never see each other again. Every single choice is that important. Living without regrets may mean thinking and making decisions for yourself, without blaming others. Even if you fail, you may reflect on it, but you won't regret it. Natsu's growth never stops!
【7SEEDS】First Love
Arashi
At first, Natsu is attracted to Aota Arashi, who is on Summer B Team, as he treats her kindly and considerately. They sometimes work together to overcome difficulties. However, Hana is actually Arashi's girlfriend. Every time Natsu sees Arashi happily talking about Hana, she feels overwhelmed with jealousy. But Natsu loves Arashi, who cares for her. His pure feelings for the Storm Flower sparkled, and perhaps he was under the illusion of falling in love. Natsu's easily influenced nature is also adorable.
Semimaru
As Natsu grows, Semimaru becomes kinder to him. It's here! (lol) Before he knew it, Semimaru had become attracted to Natsu. Semimaru originally bullied Natsu because he saw himself in him when he was being bullied, but as Natsu became stronger and more positive, he became jealous whenever Natsu interacted with Arashi or Ango from Natsu's A-Team. No, it just made me grin (lol) Semimaru is just too cute. He even sneakily held hands. He said he couldn't help it, but you could feel his excitement. Of course, Natsu didn't seem to have any feelings of love for Semimaru, but little by little she was drawn to his kindness and masculinity. They make a great couple.
First Kiss
Before Semimaru faces any difficulties, he calls Natsu over and kisses him! Natsu freezes up after this, but it's thrilling to see how pure and innocent Semimaru is, knowing he can do his best because of Natsu. Natsu is confused by this first kiss, but as their interactions grow, he starts to feel like he's pulling Semimaru along, which makes things even more interesting! The roles are reversed. Even though he gets flustered when Natsu rebels against him, keep an eye on Semimaru, who doesn't seem completely opposed (lol).
When he's in a weak mood
Natsu may be the only person Semimaru is willing to show his vulnerable side to. He always seems cheerful and playful in front of others. At first, Natsu was scared of Semimaru and trembled, but now she has become an irreplaceable presence in his heart. People can really change. It's almost enviable to see how lucky he is to have someone care for him so much. It's a love story you'll want to root for!
【7SEEDS】Anime
Spring 2019
The anime will premiere exclusively on Netflix in spring 2019. While we're all curious about the character designs, we'll share the information that's been released about the anime. Of course, Natsu will be on the cover! She looks anxious (lol). Overall, all the characters are designed to look young. It's a lovely, modern look.
Voice Actor
This is Nao Higashiyama, who voices Natsu. She's so cute! I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of voice she'll use and how she'll act. She generally has a cute, idol-like voice, so I think she'll be able to play Natsu in a cute way. I can't wait to see Natsu in action! Please look forward to it!
Visual
This is Natsu's character design for the anime. His hand on his chest and worried frown are very Natsu-like. The colors are vibrant, and his impression changes slightly in the anime. The first promotional video has also been released, so be sure to check it out to see Natsu in action. Just watching the video will have you in tears (lol). His facial expressions and worldview look will remain intact, so please look forward to it.
【7SEEDS】Natsu makes you feel like it's okay to be weak
What did you think? We've introduced you to the first heroine of 【7SEEDS】? Learn more about Iwashimizu Natsu! Extremely shy and always retreating into her shell to protect herself, Natsu was initially like a baby who only thought about herself. She grew through hard work and cooperation as a team, and I think she was also blessed to have many people who clearly guided her. Watching Natsu made me realize that people need to interact with others in order to grow. But the most important thing is that Natsu realized his own weaknesses and took a positive approach to improving them. "7SEEDS" is a manga that will benefit you as a person! If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it.
