Hiei specializes in swordsmanship, specializing in overwhelming speed and instantaneous kills with his sword. He demonstrates his skill in events such as the Dark Tournament, instantly killing multiple opponents with just his sword. Additionally, when Hiei opens his evil eyes and uses his ability, eyeballs appear all over his body and his body turns green. This allows him to immobilize his opponents. Through training, he has become able to use the Jaou Ensatsu Ken, which controls the black flames of the demon world, and he gains even more power by covering himself in the black flames of the demon world. In the story, he often kills his opponents in an instant, and defeats most enemies without much difficulty.

Yusuke Urameshi was originally an enemy. Hiei appears in the human world to search for his sister's whereabouts and a jewel that was a keepsake from his mother that he lost, and steals a treasure from the spirit world. During this time, Urameshi fights Hiei to retrieve the treasure from the spirit world, and takes advantage of Hiei's carelessness to defeat him. Since then, Hiei has acknowledged Urameshi's abilities, and a sense of rivalry and camaraderie has developed between them. He also lends Urameshi his strength in various ways at the command of the spirit world in order to lessen the consequences of the crimes he has committed, and they now act together. Although he does not actively get involved, he is aware that he is a friend, and will appear when his friends are in real trouble.

Kuwabara and Kazuma Kuwabara are familiar with each other, having accompanied each other in defeating Suzaku and fighting as a team in the Dark Tournament. However, while Hiei does acknowledge Kuwabara as a friend, he is indifferent to him and considers him an insignificant presence. He also seems to look down on Kuwabara, as he feels that he has a bad image because, like Kuwabara, he also uses his demonic powers to transform into swords to attack, which is what Hiei does. He considers Kuwabara to be the weakest of his friends, but he does seem to trust him to some extent and acknowledges him as a friend.

Fox Demon Kurama was originally a thief from the Demon World. He usually appears human, with long red hair, an androgynous face, and a rational personality. Fox Demon Kurama worked alongside Hiei before joining Urameshi. They then devised strategies such as defeating a monster called the Eight Hands and stealing treasures from the spirit world in order to fulfill their respective wishes. Afterwards, both Hiei and Kurama were targeted by the Demon World, and they began participating in the Dark Tournament together. Of the group, Hiei is the one he trusts the most, and recognizes Kurama's abilities. As proof of this, Hiei teamed up with Kurama because he didn't want to make him his enemy, and is therefore very wary of him.

Yukina is a yokai called the Ice Woman, and Hiei's younger sister. Yukina herself is unaware that Hiei is her brother. When the Ice Woman sheds tears, they turn into a valuable gemstone called Hiruiseki. Because of this, he was targeted by humans and captured, but Urameshi and Kuwabara rescued him. He was then safely reunited with Hiei.

Mukuro is one of the Three Great Demons of the Demon World. The other three great demons of the demon world are Yomi and Raizen. They usually hide their appearance by covering themselves in talismans and bandages, but in reality, half of their bodies appear to be severely burned. Their original form was that of a beautiful woman, but they have grown fond of their current appearance. Upon sensing Raizen's death, they fear that the balance of the demon world will be upset, so they scout Hiei and recruit him as their ally. They are said to have extremely high fighting abilities, but there are no battle scenes in the story, so it remains unknown what kind of attacks they use.

So far, we've covered basic information about Hiei, a key character in Yu Yu Hakusho, and introduced characters with whom he has a deep relationship. So, what is the appeal of Hiei? Let's take a closer look. We'll explore him from various angles, based on events that occurred in the story.

Hiei's Charm #1: His Absolutely Powerful Skill

Hiei's greatest appeal is his utterly powerful skill. While he does lose to Urameshi in the story, he is overwhelmingly superior in all other battles, winning instantly. Therefore, while there aren't many battle scenes, they are impactful and cool, which is one of his charms. He loves fighting, and has a short temper, but he's also charming in the way he attacks people he doesn't like without mercy, and his ability to kill annoying enemies in an instant is something Hiei admires. It can also be said that it's cool how he acts as if nothing happened despite doing amazing things.

Hiei's Charm #2: His Cool, Unsociable Personality

The next charm of Hiei is his cool, unsociable personality. Hiei is generally quiet and doesn't say much. While he may provoke people during battles, he's not the type to get laughs. He's a manly character who does what needs to be done when it needs to be done. In fact, he won every match in the Dark Tournament, demonstrating his determination and fearsomeness by killing his opponents in an instant, even at the cost of sacrificing his own skills. Because he deliberately doesn't usually speak, the words he speaks carry weight, and he has many famous quotes.

Hiei's Charm #3: The Gap Between His Cute Appearance and His Reality

Hiei's Advice

The last charm of Hiei I'd like to introduce is the gap between his cute appearance and his cool looks. While Hiei is cool, he also has a childlike, cute appearance. This is evidenced by the large female fanbase among readers, making him a highly popular character. Hiei is usually foul-mouthed, and when he does speak, he speaks provocatively or violently. However, after a battle he often falls asleep due to exhaustion, and when he is asleep he seems like a normal child. The contrast between how cool he is during battle and how cute he is after the battle makes him even more appealing.
