"Ueno-san wa Bukiyou" is a manga by tugeneko that was serialized in short bursts in the biannual manga magazine "Young Animal." It was adapted into a TV anime in January 2019 and is scheduled to air mainly on TOKYO MX. The main character is a middle school student named Ueno. The story follows Ueno as she tries various ways to confess her feelings to Tanaka, the boy she has a crush on, but always fails. In this article, we'll introduce our own ranking of the most famous quotes from "Ueno-san wa Bukiyou."
No. 10: "It's no good if Tanaka doesn't drink it!"

This is when Ueno invented the ultimate portable filtration device, "Rokka-kun." "Rokka-kun" is a device capable of purifying even the most eye-watering sewer water to the level of a spring gushing forth from an ice cave. Ueno then filters his own urine. Tanaka, upon hearing this, seems to brush him off, saying, "Just put that away, you're so good." However, Ueno offers Tanaka the filtered water and commands him to drink it. Tanaka continues to refuse, but Ueno persists, begging him to drink. Ueno is in love with Tanaka, and this behavior is a somewhat unusual expression of affection. Ueno somehow manages to convey to him, "It's no good if Tanaka doesn't drink it!" and "Of course I want you to drink it!!" However, the insensitive Tanaka seems unaware of his feelings, seemingly wondering, "Huh, so why?" Finally, Ueno asks, "What's wrong with Tanaka? Are you just spacing out even after being confessed to?" To which Tanaka blushes and replies, "Well...no one's ever confessed to me before." So Ueno went for a straightforward answer, "It's practically happening right now, it's ongoing!", to which Tanaka was surprised, saying "Huh! By whom!?" This is one of the many ways Ueno tried to convey her feelings.
9th Place: "This is the uniquely feminine smell!"

When Ueno created the instant deodorizing device "Dash-tan," this invention irradiates its target with mysterious electromagnetic waves, instantly transporting all odorous substances to heaven. For the experiment, Ueno used tights, Yamashita used socks, and Tanaka used indoor shoes. Therefore, before conducting the experiment, each person decided to confirm the smell of a different person's target. Ueno smelled Yamashita's socks and said, "They smell like the socks a girl wears after school." Next, it was Tanaka's turn to smell Ueno's tights. Ueno grinned as Tanaka subjected him to the humiliation of having to smell a girl's tights in front of her and give his opinion. Tanaka, in shock, simply said, "They stink." Ueno responded, "It wouldn't be a test if they didn't stink," but Tanaka couldn't hide his surprise, saying, "Well, I suppose so, but these... stink." "Wait... eh... is this really how it's going to turn out?" Ueno froze in a cold sweat after hearing this. Yamashita noticed this and sniffed the tights himself, adding, "No, that's normal. My socks are like this too." However, even after smelling Yamashita's socks, Tanaka says, "No, the chief's tights smell worse," and adds, "The chief's smells like eight pairs of socks." Tanaka then starts to suggest that they should try deodorizing them, but Yamashita shouts, "I'm not going to deodorize them!" He also insists, "I'm not going to deodorize them because they don't stink!" and "This is a nice smell that's unique to girls!" This is a famous quote that shows Yamashita's kindness, as he acts with Ueno in mind, as the situation becomes awkward.
8th Place: "Then please kiss the one I was drinking."

It was the day of the experiment using "Garraku-tan." By speaking to Ginga with a moderate clockwise rotational force, Garrac-tan was able to manifest the perfect amount of water for a quick break. Wanting to use the Junk-tan, which resembles a plastic bottle, Ueno applied a moderate amount of clockwise force to the lid. A 500ml bottle of water appeared in an instant. Ueno offered the water to Tanaka, but Tanaka didn't seem to trust it. So Ueno drank it first. Then, it was Tanaka's turn. Ueno placed the half-drunk Junk-tan on the table, but Tanaka started drinking from a new one. Ueno seemed angry at Tanaka's unexpected behavior, exclaiming, "Why did you open a new one without asking me?" However, Tanaka thoughtfully replied, "Well, guys kiss the place I kissed. Girls are more sensitive about that sort of thing, right?" Wanting an indirect kiss, Ueno panicked, saying, "I don't really care about... indirect kisses or anything like that, you know?" Sweating, she tried to cover it up. Furthermore, when Ueno says, "You're being too conscious of weird things, aren't you!?" Tanaka looks annoyed and says, "Then kiss the one I was drinking. It's fine, isn't it?", handing Tanaka the Junk-tan that Tanaka had drunk himself. Ueno tries to drink Tanaka's half-drunk Junk-tan, but in a panic drops it on the floor. Tanaka says, "Don't push yourself," and leaves to get a rag to wipe up the spilled water. Ueno picks up the plastic bottle and tries to take a sip, but when Tanaka returns, he calmly retorts, "Boss, that was the one that dropped it." In the end, it ends in failure, but the words give Ueno the chance to deliver an indirect kiss, and Tanaka, who usually doesn't show any signs of anger, gets unusually annoyed, making this a famous line.
7th Place: "This is the Ueno way, a self-confession!!!"
Source: Miss Ueno is Clumsy ©tugeneko, Hakusensha / Miss Ueno is Clumsy Production Committee
This is when Ueno invented the futuristic rescue device "BG Blue Light." This device can illuminate objects of the same hue as a specified color. This time, they were going to test the operation of "BG Blue Light," so they first identified Ueno's handkerchief. The color they identified from the handkerchief was "Ichikin-zome." This "Ichikin-zome" is the name for the pale crimson color achieved by dyeing one piece of silk with one kin of safflower. During the Heian period, when safflower was expensive, this "Ichikin-zome" was the upper limit of crimson, and any crimson dye darker than that was forbidden. This is why "Ichikin-zome" is also known as "Yurushiroi" (listening color). This time, Ueno had used this "Yurushiroi" color to draw a picture of Ueno and Tanaka sharing an umbrella on her innerwear. Ueno showed the umbrella to Tanaka, and entrusted Tanaka with the final push to make their relationship work, thus attempting the Ueno style of "Entrusted Confession." Ueno immediately turns off the lights in the room and, pumping herself up, says, "This is the Ueno way, a confession without reservation!!!" as she watches Tanaka's reaction, but when Tanaka looks at Ueno, he turns away, seemingly embarrassed. Just when it seems like it's worked, Yamashita says, "Let's lie down for a moment, for a moment," and takes Ueno to the mirror. Ueno wonders if the message was too strong, and when she looks in the mirror, she sees that the important words on the shared umbrella are hidden by the tie. In the end, this plan is a complete failure, but this is a famous quote that shows Ueno's progress in trying to convey her feelings in an easy-to-understand way by using a "confession."
6th Place: "I Swapped Molecules with My Mouth"
Source: Miss Ueno is Awkward ©tugeneko, Hakusensha / Miss Ueno is Awkward Production Committee
It was the day Ueno consumed "Dorantode S," a futuristic drink containing the futuristic ingredient Dorantode. Drinking "Dran Tode S" supposedly neutralizes the odor molecules of the drinker for approximately 24 hours. Ueno tells Tanaka to smell the soles of his feet, since there's no odor. When Tanaka finally smells Ueno's feet, he's impressed to find that there's no odor at all. However, "Dran Tode S" doesn't eliminate odor molecules because it doesn't excrete them; rather, while odorous components are excreted, the odor molecules themselves are deodorized. Therefore, if you continue to smell something, the odor molecules will be absorbed into the body of the person sniffing it. Ueno's experiment this time takes advantage of this effect, adding a twist to his plan: to have Tanaka's own odor molecules absorbed and accepted by Tanaka's body. Curious, Tanaka begins sniffing various parts of his body, including his stomach and neck, to see if the odor will be eliminated from his entire body. Eventually, he even wanted to check Tanaka's breath, so he opened his mouth wide with Tanaka right next to him. Tanaka continued to sniff, so Ueno punched him and ran away. Ueno then crouched down, hiding his face, and said embarrassedly, "I just swapped molecules with Tanaka using my mouth." This famous quote shows that an unexpected and happy incident had occurred for Ueno.
5th Place: "I won't let you go until you accept it."

This is when Ueno developed a protective fabric that absorbs all impacts while being about the same thickness as regular fabric. Ueno told Tanaka that he had already put on the cloth, and that Tanaka had to figure out where it was and hit it. If he guessed correctly, he would receive the actual cloth as a gift on the spot. As for the crucial piece of cloth, Ueno had used it to make a bra-type protective suit, so she was wearing it on her chest, and she began this experiment with the intention of getting Tanaka, an adolescent boy, to focus on her breasts. However, ignoring Ueno's thoughts, Tanaka said, "Ah, I got it," and hit Ueno's buttocks. "Wait a minute!" Ueno said, but Tanaka replied, "I knew it was here!" and hit Ueno's buttocks again. Tanaka, who mistakenly thought he had guessed correctly, seemed happy that he had hit the target, and followed Ueno tentatively, trying to hit him on the buttocks. "I told you it wasn't here!" Ueno said, and tried to run away, but Tanaka eventually hit her on the buttocks and she fell over. To add insult to injury, Tanaka grabs Ueno's arm and says, "I won't let go until you admit it. Come on, admit it already. This is the right answer, right?" as he continues to hit him with glee. As he continues to hit him, Ueno reluctantly tells him that it was the right answer, even though it was wrong, and is finally released. Ueno, having completely lost his fighting spirit, turns to leave when Tanaka holds out his hand, saying, "You said you'd give it to me if I guessed right." Having lied about wearing it on his butt, Ueno doesn't want to be hit again, so he takes off his regular pants and hands them to Tanaka. Tanaka plays with them, stretching and twisting them, saying, "They look like regular pants." After playing with them for a while, he says, "Well, I have no use for these, so I'll give them back." These words reveal Tanaka's true character, who will go all the way when he gets to do something.
No. 4: "Shall I turn off the device?"
Source: Ueno-san wa Bukiyou ©tugeneko・Hakusensha/Ueno-san wa Bukiyou Production Committee
This happened during an experiment on the new molester reporting device, "Kanchikan." The Kanchikan is a decorative device that connects with the mysterious spirit Kanchichi and sounds an alarm to those around it if the Spirit Council determines that a person has been subjected to a shameful act. Wearing the Kanchikan, Ueno orders Tanaka to commit a sexual assault. However, Tanaka seems to refuse, saying he doesn't understand. Ueno then tells Tanaka, "Think of it as a way to help those suffering from sexual assault." Tanaka, seemingly determined, says, "Okay, I'll play the role of the sexual assaulter," but the Kanchikan immediately reacts. The device supposedly reacts when a person is sexually assaulted, but Tanaka has not yet committed a sexual assault. Ueno tries to calm down, but the Kanchikan continues to react. Yamashita then takes Ueno outside to calm her down. The purpose of this experiment using the device was to have Ueno maintain her composure when Tanaka touches her, gradually escalating his actions. However, Ueno's inability to maintain composure causes the Kanchikan to immediately react. Yamashita then suggests, "Shall we turn off the device?" However, Ueno makes a scientist-like statement, saying, "I can't cross that line." Ueno lies, saying that she reacted because she had a slight cold, and returns to Tanaka. However, as soon as the experiment begins, the kanchikan immediately reacts. Ueno is unable to get closer to Tanaka by turning off the switch, and begins crying, saying, "I hate these arms that don't allow me to compromise." Tanaka pats Ueno's back and gently says, "Chief, let's get you better first. Being healthy is the most important thing." This is a famous quote that shows Ueno's scientist nature, as she cannot compromise on the experiment, no matter how much she likes Tanaka.
3rd Place: "If you have any worries, please talk to me about them."

This is the story of when Ueno invented the robot version of Ueno, "Ueno No. 13." "Ueno No. 13" is a fully autonomous gynoid robot, custom-built by Ueno from a prototype currently under development for nursing care, equipped with circuitry capable of expressing a young girl's feelings. The plan is to use Ueno No. 13 to stimulate Tanaka's adolescent inner self and make him flustered. The plan is put into action immediately. The real Ueno watches from hiding. Ueno No. 13 stares intently at Tanaka, but Tanaka seems unconcerned and asks, "What is it?" Ueno No. 13 then offers him some gum, saying, "Tanaka, would you like some gum?" Tanaka simply replies, "Okay then, I'll have some," and begins munching away. Ueno No. 13 then begins repeatedly chanting, "Tanaka, let me rest my head on your lap." Tanaka, despite saying, "What's going on today?", offers Ueno No. 13 a pillow on his lap. Ueno #13 then says, "Tanaka, pat me on the head," to which Tanaka asks, "Did something bad happen to the captain!?" He then pats her head and says, "Captain, I don't know what happened, but if there's something bothering you, please come and talk to me about it. If it's difficult for you to talk to me, you can talk to Yamashita-san too." Ueno #13 58+36 then suddenly stands up and says, "Tanaka, do you like Ueno?" Ueno, unable to bear the situation, rushes out yelling. Then, with his face red, he says, "Eeek, you let me fool you, you idiot! You idiot, you idiot, you stupid fool!" and leaves the clubroom with Ueno #13. This famous quote shows Tanaka, who gives the impression of not being very interested in people, but was concerned about Ueno and showed his kindness.
2nd Place: "But I Love That About Her!!"
Source: Miss Ueno is Awkward ©tugeneko, Hakusensha / Miss Ueno is Awkward Production Committee
When Ueno created the ultimate portable filtration device, "Rokka-kun," she tried to filter her own urine and urged Tanaka to drink it, but Tanaka continued to refuse. Ueno keeps asking Tanaka to drink because he's the one she likes, but in the end he doesn't. When Ueno says, "What's up with Tanaka? Are you still spacing out even after being confessed to?", Tanaka blushes and says no one has ever confessed to him, so Ueno clearly replies, "Right now, someone's practically confessed to me, right now!", but Tanaka seems surprised and says, "What! To whom?!" After Tanaka leaves, Ueno remembers all the different ways she's tried to convey her feelings up until now, and seems amazed at Tanaka's extreme insensitivity. But then, hiding her blushing face with her hand, she says, "But that's what I like about you!!" This is a famous quote that shows Ueno's unwavering love.
No. 1: "Come a little closer, please."
Source: Miss Ueno is Clumsy ©tugeneko, Hakusensha / Miss Ueno is Clumsy Production Committee
This was when Ueno invented the "II Umbrella." This device deployed an anti-gravity field upward, creating a weak gravity wall that deflected targets. This invention allows you to wear it on your head and stay dry in the rain without having to worry about getting wet. One day, after demonstrating the "II Umbrella," Ueno was on his way home. It was pouring rain. As he was about to leave, wearing the "II Umbrella," he heard a voice from behind him call out, "Officer!" He turned around to see Tanaka, who said, "I didn't bring my umbrella today. Let me in, please." Ueno replied, "Well, I can't help it, you're special," and stepped into Ueno's sheltered area. Tanaka then pulled Ueno's shoulder. Ueno blushed and said, "Hey!", but Tanaka replied, "But half of my hair is already out." Tanaka asked, "Come a little closer," and Ueno replied, "Okay, so just let go! Seriously!" These words were spoken during a heartwarming moment between the two.
