The anime series The Witch and the Beast, scheduled to air in January 2024, is a dark fantasy about the witch-related incidents involving Guido, a beast who has been transformed into a beautiful girl, and his magician partner, Ashaf. In addition to the suspense and mystery surrounding the witch-related incidents, the battle scenes are also incredibly powerful, making this an anime I'm personally looking forward to! Here's a look at the characters from The Witch and the Beast!
Character #1: Guido
One of the main characters of the series. While beautiful in appearance, she has a rough and violent personality. In fact, he has been transformed by a witch's curse. Along with his partner, Ashaf, he is involved in witch-related incidents while trying to track down the witch who placed the curse on him and exact revenge. While he works with Ashaf out of a shared interest in tracking down the witch, he gradually begins to trust Ashaf. His true form is stored in the coffin Ashaf carries around, and it is powerful enough to defeat even the pinnacle of sorcery, a witch, or a magic sword with the power to destroy the world, with a single blow.
Character #2: Ashaf
The other protagonist of this work. A magician who belongs to the Magical Sound Cult. He is a tall, gentle gentleman with slicked-back hair. They work together due to their shared interest in searching for witches. He acts as a watchdog and a stopper for Guido, who tends to rush into things when witches are involved. He is intelligent and well-versed in magic and behind-the-scenes matters, and is skilled at gathering information, deductive reasoning, and insight, so while Guido is in charge of the rough stuff, Ashaf is in charge of the brains. It's not that Ashaf himself is incapable of fighting, but the enemies he faces are often too powerful, so he usually stays behind the scenes and makes sure things go smoothly.
Character #3: Ione
A witch who is hailed as a hero in a certain town. However, she once suffered persecution and had her life threatened simply for being a witch. She also harbors a deep resentment for her grandmother, who sealed away the hellfire that had once ravaged the town and saved it, only to be framed and executed. She attempts to unleash the hellfire her grandmother had sealed away. After her plan is thwarted by Guido and Ashaf, she is taken into custody by the Magical Echoes Cult. It's believed she has some kind of lineage, but this is never revealed in the story.
Character #4: Fanora Christofle
A necromancer belonging to the Magical Sounds Cult. A professional in dealing with necromancers, she takes over cases that Ashaf has been asked to solve by the police. A "Mysterious Witch" (likely a witch who inherited her lineage), she uses necromancer knights loyal to Fanora in battle. When necromancers reach the end of their second life, their souls are trapped in the void, suffering eternal torment. Despite knowing the risks, the necromancers remain loyal to Fanora. She can be quite frightening when angered.
Character #5: Johan
Fanora's assistant. He mainly performs odd jobs such as physical labor and combat. While his appearance and personality are no different from those of a saint, he is a true corpse. Unlike normal corpses, he can be revived without any maintenance even if his body dies.
Character #6: Matt Kuga
He is the commander of the Sixth Battalion of the Holy Knights on the Third Continent, the Holy Church's only military force capable of dealing with witches. Despite being a human, he is a spirit magician who has made a contract with the Great Spirit of Ice, and his strength rivals that of a single witch. Nicknamed the "Ice Man," he gives off a cold impression, but in reality he is a very earnest man. He never tolerates the death of a good person, and is so conscientious that he even considers the possibility that a bad person might actually be good. However, he shows no mercy to those who cross the line, even his allies.
Character #7: Helga Velvet
A witch of the "Fortitude Witch" lineage, attacked by the Holy Knights for the brutal murder of six men. She protects the magic sword "Ashugan," said to have the power to destroy the world, and is considered the weakest of her lineage because she devotes most of her power to sealing it. In reality, she was falsely accused, framed by an executioner who coveted the power of the magic sword, but she is rescued by Guido and Ashaf. She is then scouted by the Magical Sound Cult.
Character #8: The Executioner Seeking the Magic Sword
In order to obtain the magic sword possessed by Helga Velvet, he raided a hidden village inhabited by witches of the lineage of brave witches, framed Helga, and used the Holy Knights. His true identity is that of the "Executioners," a dark organization of the Holy Church. He possesses the forbidden weapon "Ishlingen," which allows him to brainwash people by simply patting them on the head. He brainwashes and kills members of Helga's hidden village and the Holy Knights. His reason for targeting the magic sword was not for his duties as an Executioner, but for personal reasons: to obtain the magic sword. His name is unknown.
Character #9: Angela Anne Fur
She is one of the 17 original witches, the "Origin Witches," and is known as the "Eternal Witch." She is the one who placed the witch's curse on Guido. While witches' appearances do not change with age, their bodies are destined to decay in 200 years. However, she alone has survived for over 200 years thanks to her ability to transfer bodies. She possesses powerful and wide-ranging abilities, such as the ability to create copies of forbidden weapons just by looking at them and the ability to transform. It has been suggested that Guido's body is actually her original body.
Character 10: Halbel Harmington
A witch descended from the "Mysterious Witches." She possesses powerful summoning magic that activates simply by command. However, a witch's curse renders her mute, preventing her from using any magical powers. She lives with her younger brother in a remote village, but her abilities become the target of a pair of executioners. He is nearly killed when it becomes clear that he is useless due to a witch's curse, but a kiss with Guido temporarily lifts the curse. He then uses a summoning spell to eliminate one of the executioners, and is subsequently scouted by Ashaf to join the Magical Echoes Cult.
Character 11: Danward Korvecht
A vampire who belongs to the Magical Echoes Cult. He was originally the king of the Night Tribe, one of the two major vampire factions living on the fourth floor of the Fall, and possessed the strongest abilities of all the vampires. He was arrogant and haughty, a selfish and cruel ruler who wielded his power as he pleased. However, 100 years ago, he was defeated by the current queen, Dornais, and fell from grace. He then made a contract with the magician Oscar, joined the Magical Echoes Cult, and vowed revenge. His personality has not changed in the past 100 years, and he often clashes with Guido and Ashaf. To fully utilize his powers, he needed to drink the blood of his pact partner, Oscar, but he refused to do so for very personal reasons, as he disliked drinking male blood.
Character 12: Oscar Olensia
A magician who belongs to the Magical Echoes Cult. He partners with Dunward, keeping his arrogant and prone to conflict with others in check. He appears female but is actually male. Heir to the lineage of the "Great Witch," he is able to wield witch powers. He can summon the sun, and unlike Dunward, whose actions are restricted during the day, his powers are restricted when the sun is not up. He inherited not only the powers and knowledge of a witch, but also her hobbies and tastes, which is why he likes to cross-dress.
Character 13: Dorneis Gywars
The current queen of the Night Tribe, one of the two major vampire factions. A century ago, she defeated Dunward and became the new queen of the vampire world. Thanks to the favor of the "Eternal Witch," Angela Anne Fyr, she gained some of the witch's powers, as well as enhanced basic physical abilities and regenerative abilities. While she appears to be enamored with Angela, Angela's favor is nothing special to her, even though she possesses her own body. When defeated by Dunward, she realizes she was merely a cog in the game.
