To fully enjoy the second season of "The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬," which begins airing in January 2021, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the fascinating characters that appeared in the first season. In stark contrast to the first season's heartwarming storyline, the second season will be a waterfall of unprecedentedly intense developments, including the intense psychological battle between the quintuplets over Fuutarou and the appearance of their real father. In addition to the introduction of new characters, the second season will also reveal hidden mysteries surrounding previously introduced characters, such as the relationship between Fuuta's father, Yuya Uesugi, and the quintuplets' father (stepfather), Maruo. This will be a season far more complex than the first season, so before you watch the second season, be sure to check out this article to learn about the characters that will appear and what aspects of those characters will be revealed in the story! Regarding the female characters, we've already introduced them in a separate article, "Ranking the Cutest Characters Appearing in [The Quintessential Quintuplets]!" Therefore, we'll skip this section. If you're interested in the female characters, be sure to check out that article too!
Uesugi Fuutarou
He is the protagonist of this series, a high school boy. He is an extremely studious man, always achieving the top grades in his grades. In the first season, he takes on a part-time job as a private tutor, found by his father, Yuya, and begins to teach the quintuplets, who are struggling with academics. At first, he only teaches them to pay off his debts, but as he spends time with them, he begins to see them not just as students, but as partners in his journey.
An Unexpected Fall to Second Place
Futaro's identity revolved around being the top student in his grade, but his dedication to tutoring the quintuplets caused their grades to drop, dropping him to second place. This incident led Futaro to realize his lack of ability as a private tutor and to decide to retire, citing his own inadequacy. However, when the quintuplets took the drastic measure of leaving their father and moving into an apartment, claiming to have "run away from home," Futaro was touched by their desire to learn from him, and he decided to continue tutoring them.
Uncertain about how to respond to the quintuplets' affections
In the first season, Fuutaro was often seen chasing the quintuplets to get them to study, but in the second season, the roles are reversed, and the quintuplets realize their affections for Fuutaro, each of them playing their cards right up to him. Naturally, even the insensitive Fuutaro eventually realizes their affections for him and struggles to decide which one to choose.
Yuya Uesugi
In the first season, he got into debt and caused trouble for Fuutaro and Raiha, but he was portrayed as a wild and kind father who raised them alone in place of his late wife. This image hasn't changed much in the second season, and his relationship with Maruo, the quintuplets' stepfather, which wasn't discussed in the first season, has been revealed, making him a more prominent character than ever.
Their Relationship with Maruo Revealed
It's revealed that Yuya Uesugi and the quintuplets' stepfather, Maruo, were once students of the quintuplets' mother. According to Yuya Uesugi, "I was a total outlaw, while he (Maruo) was the undisputed top of his class and student council president." Their high school days were fraught with incompatibility due to their polar opposite personalities, but it seems the quintuplets' mother, Rena, was the one who kept the two together. Anyway, this solves the mystery of how Yuya was able to introduce such a favorable part-time job to Futaro. While Yuya Uesugi and Maruo still don't seem to get along, they still meet up every now and then, so it seems they don't truly hate each other.
Maruo
As mentioned above, Maruo and Yuya Uesugi were classmates who studied under Reina, the quintuplets' mother. Maruo later graduated with excellent grades and began working as a doctor. He apparently took care of Reina, his former teacher, but despite his efforts, she passed away. He later adopted the quintuplets she left behind and lives with them to this day.
He was a clumsy but kind father!!
In the first season, he was like a final boss standing in Futaro's way. However, in the second season, with the arrival of Mudo, the quintuplets' real father, he takes on a new final boss role. His emotional expression is quite different from his previous image, as he's a surly father who cares deeply for his quintuplets.
But he looks scary!!
If there's one flaw, it's that he looks scary. At first glance, he seems like a cold father with no affection for his daughters, but in reality, he's a kind, clumsy father who cares about his daughters but can't face them head-on. He doesn't get particularly close to the quintuplets throughout the story, but I'm sure many readers felt a sudden closeness to him after the misunderstanding was cleared up.
The Quintuplets' Grandfather
In the second season, Rena's father, who is the quintuplets' grandfather, also appears. While his name and other details are never revealed, he is a grandfather with such strong love for his grandchildren that he can tell the quintuplets apart without a trace, even though they all dress alike. He plays an important role in the story, teaching Futaro how to tell them apart when he struggles to tell them apart.
He passed away by the time Fuutarou got married.
Although he appeared to be quite old in the story, it seems he had already passed away by the time Fuutarou and his bride got married. There is a photo of Fuutarou and the quintuplets together in the story, and there is a scene where the quintuplets look at it and reminisce before the wedding.
Mudou
This character is the new final boss, appearing in the second season. He is the quintuplets' real father, and disappeared somewhere the moment he realized they were quintuplets at birth. He suddenly appears before Satsuki later in the story, rejecting her dream of becoming like her mother and urging the quintuplets to return to him.
With the help of Rena's students, they were able to repel the attack.
Mudo posed a formidable enemy for the quintuplets and Futaro, but with the help of Rena's students, Yuya and Maruo, they successfully repelled him.
Maeda
In the first season, he appears as a pitiful character who tries to confess his feelings to Ichika, but is thwarted by Miku and Fuutarou. Although he was a pitiful character in the first season, in the second season, he is reassigned to the same class as Fuutarou and the quintuplets, and begins hanging out with Fuutarou. He has risen from his previous slightly scary but kind-hearted character to a semi-regular character, interacting with Fuutarou in a way that makes him a semi-regular member.
Yusuke Takeda
This new character appears in the second season. At Fuutarou's high school, he always ranks second to the top of his class. He seems to view Fuutarou as a fierce rival, but he's a sad character in that Fuutarou never pays him any attention. He's refreshing and has excellent grades, so he seems to be very popular with the girls around him.
Fuutaro's Powerful Rival
With Fuutaro's academic performance declining, Takeda competes for the position of Fuutaro's tutor based on their rankings in the national mock exams. Fuutaro ultimately wins, but since they are still in the same class after the match, Takeda is often seen hanging out with Fuutaro and Maeda.
Ebata
Ebata is Maruo's secretary. While he was a minor character in the first season, it was unclear whether he even appeared in any episodes, he plays a more significant role in the second season. When Fuutaro was about to retire as his tutor, he disguised himself as his tutor under the pseudonym "Atabe Maruo" and helped the quintuplets, who were trying to bring Fuutaro back. Many viewers were touched by the sight of him working so hard for the quintuplets, despite being their father's secretary.
Bakery Manager
The manager of the bakery where Fuutarou works. His name has not been revealed, but after Nino and Fuutarou join the bakery, he often plays a vital role as a reliable boss. Although he looks quite intimidating, he treats Fuutarou and the quintuplets kindly, and is one of the few adults they can rely on. He also has a somewhat dark side, such as when he calls the bakery where Miku works a "shitty bakery."
The President of an Entertainment Production Company
He is the president of the entertainment production company Ichika belongs to. At the beginning of the first season, he seemed like a suspicious old man who was involved with Ichika, but in the second season, he has become a reliable president who continues to believe in Ichika's talent. His only daughter, Kiku, also appears, and more information has been added to his character, making him even more appealing.
