"Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World," or "Re:ZERO" for short, has become a huge hit as an alternate world fantasy story! The long-awaited second season of the anime has finally been confirmed. This article will take a closer look at the legendary Seven Witches, who were destroyed 400 years ago in the world of Re:ZERO.
What are the Seven Witches?
The six witches who were destroyed 400 years ago, along with Satella, who destroyed them, are collectively known as the "Seven Witches." Each witch possesses incredible powers, but their souls are currently held captive by the power of Echidna, the Witch of Greed.
The Witch of Greed, Echidna, also appears in the trailer for Season 2 of the anime, so let's take a look at the witch's abilities and characteristics as background information for Season 2!
Satella, the Witch of Envy
The story of Satella, the Witch of Envy, who destroyed six other witches and nearly destroyed the world 00 years ago is well-known in the Kingdom of Lugnica. Furthermore, because Satella was a silver-haired half-elf, Emilia, who shares similar characteristics, is hated.
Satella, by the way, has remained sealed away since the incident 400 years ago. Some speculate that Emilia's true identity may be Satella, but when Subaru tried to tell her about Return by Death, Emilia was killed by the Witch, suggesting otherwise!
Who is Satella?
Satella looks identical to Emilia. It's known that she actually has two personalities. In fact, even the witches who were destroyed by Satella have said, "I can't forgive the Witch of Envy, but I don't hate Satella." The "Witch of Envy" is a personality that developed when Satella absorbed witch factors despite not being suited to them.
Both the Witch of Envy and Satella's personality love Subaru, so they become jealous when other women approach him.
Just Absolutely Powerful!
Satella nearly destroyed the world 400 years ago, and even the three strongest people of that era—the original Sword Saint Reid, the Divine Dragon Volcanica, and the Sage Shaula—were unable to defeat her and instead sealed her away.
And even now, no one can approach the place where Satella is sealed, as they are exposed to the witch's miasma.
Echidna, the Greedy Witch
Echidna is a witch greedy for knowledge. She was killed by Satella along with other witches 400 years ago, but her soul remains sealed in the Sanctuary's tomb thanks to her own power.
Echidna's curiosity and inquisitiveness are always driving her to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. She knows about Subaru's Return by Death power and is fascinated by the idea of seeing parallel worlds. Because of this, she harbors special feelings for Subaru, but it's not love, it's simply a desire to learn.
The Relationship Between Puck and Beatrice
In fact, Puck and Beatrice are spirits created by Echidna. It's amazing that she can create spirits, but it also shows just how incredible Echidna's knowledge is. Looking at Puck and Beatrice, they don't feel artificial at all! Also, as I'll explain in more detail in another article, it was Echidna who taught Roswaal magic.
The Witch of Wrath, "Minerva"
Minerva is a cute girl with a baby face and large breasts, and her side-pony hairstyle. When she throws a punch, her sleeves open like flowers, healing any wound. She is angry at people for hurting others, and seeks to heal those who are hurt. While this healing punch may not be her only power, it has the side effect of directly extracting mana from its source... As a result, natural disasters occur somewhere in the world in numbers greater than the number of people she heals.
The Witch of Sloth, Sekhmet
Sekhmet is a pale-faced woman with incredibly long, purplish-red hair. As the Witch of Sloth would expect, she's incredibly lazy. The "Invisible Hand" used by Petelgeuse was also a power that manifested from Sekhmet, who wanted to grab something far away without having to stand up. She constantly sighs and sighs while speaking. I wonder how lazy she is...
Is her combat ability incredibly high?
Sekhmet boasts overwhelming power among witches. It's said that even a group of other witches would be instantly defeated... She's also apparently powerful enough to fight Satella, so if she were to get serious, she could destroy about half the world. Echidna tells of Sekhmet's heroic tale of driving a dragon far away.
Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony
Daphne is tightly bound in a coffin, wearing a black eyepatch and a rather mysterious appearance. She possesses a mystic eye, which causes anyone who gazes upon it to become so consumed that they are overcome with hunger that they eat their own flesh. Daphne has never felt full, and has even eaten her own finger out of hunger (Minerva has cured this). She is restrained because she eats so many things, but Subaru suggests it's to prevent her from consuming calories.
The Arrogant Witch "Typhon"
Typhon, a young girl with tanned skin and a flower ornament in her hair, evokes a tropical vibe. Although it's hard to imagine from her cute appearance, she has the ability to cut off or shatter parts of people's bodies. She judges everything in terms of "good and evil" and passes judgment on everyone she meets. Incidentally, if the person whose body is torn off feels guilty, it doesn't hurt so much that they won't even notice it has been torn off.
She also calls the Sloth Witch Sekhmet "Haha" and is very fond of her, occasionally wiping her body.
Carmilla, the Lustful Witch
Just as her quiet appearance suggests, Carmilla is very shy. She has long pink hair and a long scarf wrapped around her neck. She struggles to express her feelings to others, but she is extremely narcissistic and merciless toward those who reject her.
She has the power to appear as the person she wants to appear to others, and those who are captivated by her powers become compelled to notice her. That wouldn't be a problem, but when Subaru becomes aware of Carmilla, he gradually forgets to breathe, and eventually his heart stops. It's a terrifying power.
As an aside, when Subaru first met Carmilla, he saw her as Rem.
Witches Other than the Seven Witches
The witches we've detailed so far are connected to the "Seven Deadly Sins" of the Catholic Church. However, when reading Emilia's backstory, we come across characters named "Pandora, the Witch of Vanity" and "Hector, the Demon of Melancholy" (Hector is the only male, so he's a demon). While we don't yet know why these two are called demons or witches, we'd like to introduce them to you.
Pandora, the Witch of Vanity
Pandora's powers are incredibly powerful, allowing her to rewrite the world to suit her needs. Even if Pandora attacks, the victim will think it was someone else who attacked them, and she can change anything to suit her needs. It's a terrifying power...
Incidentally, Pandora is considered taboo in the Witch's Cult, but she is also revered, leaving many mysteries surrounding her. There are also rumors that she may be the mastermind behind the Witch's Cult, but this too remains a mystery... She is still alive, but the details are unknown.
Demon of Melancholy: Hector
Hector's power allows him to crush any object, whether living or magical. Other than that, little is known.
Seven Generations of Witches Summary
So far, we've introduced the witches who will likely become important characters in the second season of the anime. What did you think? This time, we've gone into detail about the witches' abilities and appearances, but their backstories are also very deep. They're all so cute, I can't wait to see them in action in the anime! I'm also curious to see who the voice actors will be.
