We're incredibly excited for the second season of "Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World," scheduled to air in July 2020! This hugely popular anime sparked the isekai boom, but perhaps its greatest mystery is Satera, the Witch of Envy. We'll be introducing this intriguing character and giving you some insight into her!

Who is Satera?

Satera

This is the mysterious protagonist of this series, the Witch of Envy, Satera. She looks just like Emilia! It's understandable why people in the village and town are wary of Emilia. The only differences in appearance are her hair ornaments and clothing. Satella doesn't have the big flower ornament, and she wears a similar black dress to Emilia's. She's half-elf with silver hair, and her face is similar too. It makes you wonder if Emilia and Satella are really unrelated.

Satera's Current State

Satera in the Rain

Apparently, approximately 400 years ago, Satera defeated the Six Witches of Sin, partially destroying the world, and was then sealed away in a shrine at the Great Waterfall in the far east of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica. It's said that she fought against the world's strongest enemies at the time: Shaula the Sage, Reid the Sword Saint, and Volcanica the Divine Dragon, but was unable to defeat them, and was finally sealed away. Such was her power. Even now, the shrine is surrounded by a thick miasma emitted by the Witch of Envy, preventing ordinary people from even approaching. Even now, 400 years later, it's possible that she could be resurrected at any time. For this reason, the Divine Dragon Volcanica, who resides near the Great Falls, keeps watch. Though it may seem peaceful, the world is on the brink of destruction, or even destruction, at any time.

The Mystery of Satera #1: Why did she destroy the world in half?

Satera

400 years ago, Satera, the Witch of Envy, suddenly destroyed the world in half. Why did she go so out of control? Author Nagatsuki Tappei has said that this mystery will be revealed in the final chapter of the main story. It's a curious question, isn't it? There are various theories, but the most likely one is that the protagonist, Subaru, is involved. This is a spoiler, but Satella whispers words of love to Subaru that almost frighten him. She repeatedly says "I love you," and ultimately asks him to come and kill her. It would be natural to assume that this insane love caused the incident 400 years ago. However, Subaru did not exist 400 years ago. This means that it's possible that this is a Subaru from a different past life or timeline. Either way, Subaru may be the one who can do something about Satella.

The Mystery of Satella 2: Why Did They Destroy the Witches?

Subaru and the Witches of Sin

Satellitera destroyed the Witches of Sin before destroying half of the world. Apparently, the witches were not on bad terms, but rather on good terms. However, Satella destroyed witches who could be considered her friends, one after another. This may make the Witches of Sin seem weak, but Satella was simply exceptionally strong; the Witches of Sin could not be destroyed with ordinary strength. This shows how uncontrollable Satella was at the time. The souls of the destroyed witches were placed in the spiritual world of Echidna, the Witch of Greed, and in fact their spirits still live on to this day. Think of them as being stuck in this world without physical bodies. The witches other than Echidna no longer seem angry about being destroyed by Satella. Perhaps they know Satella's intentions. If they were to forgive her knowing this, it's something everyone can sympathize with. Satella was filled with jealousy, so she must have been filled with sadness at some kind of betrayal. If you're interested, read the main story and try to think about it!

Satellae's Mystery 3: Why is she so obsessed with Subaru?

Consideration ①

The invisible hand touching Subaru

Satella is said to be the one who summoned Subaru to another world. It's also speculated that she was the one who gave him the power of Return by Death. While it may seem like she's repeatedly inflicting pain on Subaru, she's actually giving him the ability to die, something humans want to avoid the most, allowing him to start his life over and over again. Looking at it positively, Subaru won't die unless Satella grows tired of him. He's died countless times, but his existence never fades away. While he seems immortal, he's not quite there, but his abilities are quite powerful. And it's almost as if he's being guided by Satella. While we don't know Satella's intentions, Subaru is the key person. Subaru's love for Satella is so strong that it's hard to say whether it's good or bad luck, but perhaps it's all due to her love for him.

Consideration 2

Flügel and Kenichi

Another plausible theory at this stage is that he may have mistaken the person he was summoned to when he was summoned to another world. Subaru's father, Natsuki Kenichi, makes a brief appearance in Season 2. This Kenichi looks exactly like the great sage Flugel. It's possible that she actually wanted to summon Kenichi, not Subaru. One theory is that Kenichi was originally summoned to another world, and after sealing away Satella, the Witch of Jealousy, he returned to his original world. Satella loved Flugel and wanted to meet him again, so she tried to summon him, but accidentally summoned Subaru, who looks similar. This is also interesting, isn't it? Kenichi is well-built and intelligent. If he also has some kind of ability, I'm sure he would have considerable fighting ability. What do you think?

Satella's Mystery 4: What is the relationship between Satella and Emilia?

Satella and Emilia

Satella and Emilia are so similar they're practically twins. It would be difficult to say they're completely unrelated. There are many theories about this, but the most interesting one is that Emilia is Satella's child. While they may be related by blood, the idea of Emilia being Satella's child is quite novel. However, it's more natural to think of her as having been created, like Beatrice. She created an alter ego to replace her immobile self. Emilia has no such memory, but the great spirit Puck seems to know something. In fact, Puck often refers to Emilia as "my daughter," and there's a theory that Emilia is the child of Satella and Puck (Puck is a temporary figure). While both theories are shocking, Emilia is the only half-elf in this world. It wouldn't be surprising if there was some connection.

I can't wait for Satella to appear!
