The second season of the anime Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World will begin airing in April 2020! Following the huge success of the first season, we're excited for the second season! Here, we'll introduce a popularity ranking of characters, including those from the first season.
Popularity Ranking #10: Felix Argyle
Ranked 10th among the many characters is Felix Argyle, the knight known for his adorable appearance. Not only is he cute in appearance, but he's also a brave knight, expresses his opinions clearly, and is reliable when the time comes. And despite his appearance, he is a genuine man. His mannerisms and gentle way of speaking are in stark contrast to his dignified side. He has feelings for Crusch, who holds royal power, and is so infatuated with her that she is his first priority. He specializes in water magic, and is one of the most skilled in the world when it comes to healing magic. He will be active in the second season as well, so be sure to keep an eye out for him.
9th Place in the Popularity Ranking: Reinhard van Astrea
Next up, coming in at 9th place, is Reinhard van Astrea. A knight among knights, he is a man who only strives for justice! He is a character who always ranks first in the series' strength rankings. The author himself has even explicitly stated his strength, and it seems that no character will ever be able to beat Reinhard. His unwavering strength and bright, positive personality make him a beloved character, almost to the point of being the main character himself (lol). While Reinhard has a difficult past, his strength and humility, which he overcame, are also key factors in his popularity. He'll also be appearing in Season 2, of course!
Popularity Ranking #8: Natsuki Subaru
Ranked #8 is the series' protagonist, Natsuki Subaru. He's summoned from the present to another world with the ability to Return by Death. It's said that he was summoned by Satella, the Witch of Envy, but this is uncertain. However, it's safe to say they have some kind of relationship. He's popular because he's a humorous, positive person with a strong sense of justice, and he always thinks of Emilia first. However, on the other hand, he's also childish, stubborn, and proud, which often puts him on the verge of going dark. That's good in the sense that it makes the story more interesting, but it still makes him feel uneasy to watch (lol). He overcomes many difficulties, but the thing I'm most curious about is when and how he'll meet Satella! Let's look forward to it.
7th Place in the Popularity Ranking: Regulus Colonius
Coming in at 7th place is Regulus Colonius, the Witch Cultist's greed specialist. He's an average character with average looks and average intelligence (lol). However, he possesses considerable abilities and is said to be the strongest in the series. He's so skilled that he's almost unfair, even to the point of being unable to land a decisive blow against Reinhard. However, his difficult personality gets in the way of that (lol). When provoked, he'll ignore strategy, change priorities, and attack. This often leads to defeat, but perhaps that's what makes her so human and popular. Honestly, she's not the kind of character you can really talk to, but she's an interesting character who leaves quite a strong impression.
Popularity Ranking #6: Ram
In sixth place is Ram, the demon maid! I thought she'd be a little higher, but given her personality, I might be biased. She's a rare twin among the demons, and her powers are even greater than those with two horns. She had the potential to become the leader of the demons, but her powers were lost when the Witch Cultists attacked her village. Despite her dark past, she was saved by Roswaal and became devoted to him. She's generally clumsy, and her only skill at gardening, laundry, and cooking is steamed sweet potatoes. This contrast is one of the reasons for her popularity, and her sharp tongue is irresistible to some (lol). She's sensitive to her sister's crises, and is so proud of her position as her older sister that their bond is genuine. She's an essential character in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-!
Popularity Ranking #5: Beatrice
In fifth place is Beatrice, the tsundere loli! From her clothing to her facial expressions to her speaking style, she's an incredibly cute character. She's not human, but an artificial spirit created by the Greedy Witch Echidna. For an unreasonable reason, she's unable to leave the Forbidden Book Archives at Roswaal Mansion. She's constantly waiting for a certain someone, but that person doesn't actually exist, and it's up to our protagonist, Natsuki Subaru, to save her from this situation. As a spirit, she has quite reliable abilities, but her special skill is door-walking, a means of transportation. Another popular feature is her quirky endings, such as "I wonder..." and "That's...", and the adorable voice of Arai Satomi, who is also memorable. Be sure to check out her voice!
4th Place in the Popularity Ranking: Echidna
In fourth place is Echidna, the Witch of Greed. She's greedy for knowledge, greedily pursuing it with curiosity and a spirit of inquiry. She's intelligent and skilled at negotiating, but she also believes that all her actions are for her own benefit, and doesn't care if others are hurt or killed as a result. She's a stunning beauty, turning heads. She's actually the creator of Beatrice, ranked 5th, and Beatrice calls her "Mother." She's the only witch who hates Satella, the Witch of Jealousy. This is because everyone gets along well with her, but she's also popular for her caring nature despite her personality. She's a key character in Season 2, so be sure to remember her now!
Popularity Ranking #3: Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti
It's finally here! In third place is the Witch's Cult's Sin Archbishop of Sloth, Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti, also known as DETH! (LOL) He makes a deep impact, but at first glance, his appearance and terrible behavior are almost frightening. He attacks with an invisible hand, and his methods are inhumane, slowly inflicting suffering. He is the most proactive of the Sin Archbishops, and is actually the character who is the easiest to talk to. However, his behavior, which is so much crazier than average, has become addictive, which is why he is so popular. He has left behind many famous quotes, such as "You're lazy" and "My brain is shaking," which are often found online. Additionally, the intense acting of Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, who voiced him in the anime, made him a really good character and made him extremely popular!
No. 2 in Popularity Ranking: Emilia
Finally, we meet the heroine of this work, Emilia. A silver-haired half-elf, she is the love interest of the protagonist, Natsuki Subaru. She's pure and innocent, and will help anyone in need no matter the situation. She's also kind-hearted, but when it comes to someone of Emilia's caliber, she becomes truly kind. While that's certainly one of her charms, her occasional use of phrases like "Otankonasu" (a silly old-fashioned word) is also heartwarming. In the story, she's a character whose past is of interest and who will undergo significant changes. Stay tuned!
Popularity Ranking #1: Rem
The clear winner is Rem, a demon maid at Roswaal's mansion! Rem's popularity is unmatched. Always grounded in love, Rem is dedicated to her work, highly praised, and easily handles anything. At first she was wary of Natsuki Subaru and killed him many times, but now she's a lovesick character who loves Subaru (lol). No matter what, she puts Subaru first, adores her sister, Emilia, and Roswaal, and is an incredibly adorable character who expresses her honest feelings. Her devotion is the secret to her immense popularity. Also, her demonic form is brave and cool! That contrast is also appealing. Also, the way she alternates between talking to her sister is popular with a certain number of fans (lol). The charming Rem takes first place! No surprise there.
