The second season of "Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World" begins in April. The second season will feature a significantly larger cast than previous seasons. Among them, we'll introduce you to the Greedy Witch, Echidna! Please note that spoilers may apply.
Who is Echidna?
She also appears in the second season's promotional video! Have you seen it? If not, it's available on the official website, so be sure to check it out! Also, when the second season was announced, Echidna was smiling in the center. She's a popular character known for her intelligence and beauty. Echidna is one of the witches who bears the Seven Deadly Sins, and she plays a key role in the second season. So, be sure to remember her here.
Echidna, the Witch of Greed
Her long silver hair and a hair ornament on the left side of her head resemble those of Emilia and Satella, the Witch of Envy. Apparently this is simply because the characters were not drawn differently (lol). She is also said to be a peerless beauty. She uses the first-person pronoun "boku," which makes her seem a little childish.
When you hear the term "Greedy Witch," you might imagine a terrible witch, but she is a witch who is greedy and desires to acquire all kinds of knowledge. She also seems to derive perverse pleasure from gaining knowledge. Echidna, who has access to all kinds of knowledge, apparently attracted an incredible number of royal families at the time. As such, she is said to be the witch most closely connected to history. To Echidna, the protagonist Subaru, who has the scent of a witch, is an unknown entity, and one that stirs her thirst for knowledge.
Echidna's Abilities
When Echidna first appears, she is considered deceased, having been destroyed by Satella, the Witch of Envy. She is sealed away by the Divine Dragon Volcanica, and her soul is preserved by Roswaal L. Mathers. Only those who have overcome numerous trials and are recognized by Echidna can meet her. While these are called trials, they are also somewhat like Echidna's experiments.
Furthermore, each trial requires not only magical power but also mental endurance. If she successfully passes the trials, she will be invited to Echidna's tea party. She is basically good at using all kinds of knowledge to deceive her opponents. Although she has advanced magical powers, she has no physical abilities, as she gets out of breath just from stretching (lol). Incidentally, other witches (other than Satella) also exist in the world where the tea party takes place.
The Long-Awaited Echidna
One of the things that had been bothering Subaru up until now was that no one understood his Return by Death ability. As a result, he was unable to properly communicate his pain, and he fell into darkness. Now, Echidna, who appears here, is the only person who understands Subaru's Return by Death ability. Fans may be feeling a sense of relief. However, to Echidna, Subaru, who possesses the Return by Death ability, is a research subject. While she's by no means a savior, knowing about it makes a difference in how she responds. Be sure to check out her dialogue with Subaru!
The Voice Actor of Echidna
Echidna's voice has yet to be announced, so from here on out, it's all speculation and hope (lol). There's been a lot of online debate about Echidna's voice, but I'd like to recommend the incredibly popular voice actress Miyuki Sawashiro! While a cute voice might suit Echidna's appearance, I think a more mature voice would be better to convey her intelligence. That's where Miyuki Sawashiro, with her handsome voice, comes in!
She instantly creates a sense of tension, and Echidna has quite a few long lines. To listen to those lines without getting bored, you'd need a really handsome voice, right?!
I can't wait for Echidna to appear!
