The anime adaptation of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World is scheduled to begin in April 2020. It is a work that pioneered the isekai boom and remains extremely popular to this day. Before season 2 of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World begins, we'll introduce the characters that appeared in season 1 here. Character 1: Natsuki Subaru
The Invincible Penniless
First up is Natsuki Subaru, the protagonist of Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World. He's a modern, 17-year-old high school student and a bit of a joker. He tends to be a recluse, not going to school and spending his days playing games and reading manga. The reason for this isn't clear, but it seems he's just a bit decadent (lol). Personality
Despite being suddenly transported to another world, Subaru initially appears quite optimistic, influenced by an otherworldly fantasy game. His love for the heroine, Emilia, is his driving force, and his single-minded devotion to Emilia's happiness above all else is also appealing. However, as the series progresses, his childish personality becomes a hindrance, and the number of depressing scenes increases. That's one of the interesting parts of Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World, but due to the pain of his special ability (discussed later) and mental issues, he falls into darkness. However, in the end, his inherent positivity and fearlessness allow him to make a comeback. He can be quite annoying (lol).
Abilities
After experiencing his third death, Natsuki Subaru discovers he has the ability to return by death, allowing him to return to a certain point in his life. She struggles to avoid death many times, but each time she has an accident or is killed, she experiences a painful death. If she successfully avoids death, the Return by Death ability does not activate, but it seems that the more times she uses the Return by Death ability, the more she will give off the "scent of a witch." Rem mistook her for an enemy because of her scent, and she almost killed him (or, to be precise, she was killed several times). The secret of this ability was not revealed in detail in the first season, but it seems we will get a glimpse of it in the second season! Please look forward to it. Incidentally, she cannot tell others about her Return by Death ability. If she tried, they would grab her heart.
Voice Actor
This is Yusuke Kobayashi, who voices the main character, Natsuki Subaru. He became interested in voice acting after he had a strange habit of loudly reciting anime lines while cycling to school in high school. He talked to a friend about this, and that's what got him interested in voice acting. It seems like she had an explosive youth (lol). Her motto is "Even if I fail, I won't die," which is the opposite of the protagonist from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, who has the ability to return by death (lol). Character 2: Emilia
Next up is the heroine of this work, Emilia. Her beautiful silver hair, amethyst eyes, and soft white and purple outfit make her look angelic. She is 164 cm tall and is 107 years old in human years in the anime, but 114 years old in the book. She often ends her sentences with "ne" (ne), and speaks in a calm and gentle manner. However, her occasional use of Showa-era slang (such as "otankonasu" or "ottamageta") only adds to her cuteness.
Personality
Having lived in the deep forest with the great spirit Puck for a long time, she is unaware of the worldly circumstances, has difficulty socializing, and tends to keep her distance. She doesn't understand Subaru's romantic feelings, and her attempts to get closer to him are always a bit of a mystery. She's caring, and has a kind heart that will help anyone in need no matter the situation. However, for some reason, she is stubborn and believes that her actions are just selfish and for her own good. Her tsundere personality is also the secret to her popularity. Although she is serious and expresses her opinions clearly, she puffs out her cheeks in front of Subaru and Puck, and uses childish language such as "but," etc. It's a cute contrast (lol).
Persecution from Society
Approximately 400 years ago, the world was home to the Seven Deadly Sins of witches. One day, one of these witches, Satella, went berserk and killed the other witches. Satella, who was described as a disaster beyond disaster level, is said to be a silver-haired half-elf. Emilia is half-elf, and because of her similar appearance to Satella, she has suffered harsh and painful persecution. Even today, there are still many people who treat her harshly. Yet seeing Emilia smiling and helping others makes Subaru fall even more in love with her! Emilia is also a candidate to become the next king of the Divine Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica. It's a great honor to be granted this title, but Emilia, who desires to improve her country despite persecution, is a pure and kind person.
Battle
She attacks by creating gigantic ice walls and pillars. Their power is impressive, making her combat abilities among the best in the series. She has excellent physical abilities, and although she has only fought a few battles, she always has the advantage. She also has a significant advantage with the Great Spirit Puck. She has more mana than Emilia and corners her opponents. Of course, she's also cute in battle (lol).
Voice Actor
This is Takahashi Rie, who voices the heroine Emilia. She's so adorable, isn't she? She's also debuted as a voice actress, so her adorableness is guaranteed! He's the perfect fit for Emilia. He's also a great singer, with a soft, beautiful voice.
Character 3: Puck
This is Puck, the great spirit who always accompanies Emilia. He has a tail as long as his height, beautiful fur, and lush green eyes. He's always loved by everyone, including the main character, Natsuki Subaru (lol). At 420 years old, he's lived longer than anyone else.
True Form
The great spirit Puck usually appears cute, but when his beloved Emilia dies or is close to death, he transforms into the "Beast of the End," possessing overwhelming size, force, and absolute power. Puck's struggles with the White Whale seem like a joke to him. While the details are unclear, when he transforms into this form, the influence of his power and his presence cause extreme weather conditions, enough to cause a sudden blizzard. This blizzard is no ordinary blizzard; it's powerful enough to dismember your body just by standing there. He is one of the most powerful characters in the Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World series. People aren't judged by their appearances!
Relationship with Emilia
Emilia and Puck have spent many years living in the deep forest, avoiding people. They are now portrayed as a good pair. Emilia calls Puck, and Puck often calls her Lia, her child, or her daughter. This suggests a deep bond between them, and some speculate that Puck may have been a human in the past and be related to Emilia. While it hasn't been clearly stated yet, their pasts are certainly intriguing.
Voice Actor
This is Yumi Uchiyama, the voice of Puck. She's quite beautiful, isn't she? She has a lovely voice, and is friendly and cheerful. Apparently, she's been using a more "moe" voice recently, which she finds a little embarrassing (lol). It suits her, though!
Character ④: Ram
This is Ram, a maid who works at the mansion where Emilia lives. Her bangs, which cover her left eye, and her beautiful pink fur are striking. Her outfit is a favorite of the mansion's owner, Roswaal L. Mathers, and Ram is quite devoted to Roswaal. If anyone insults Roswaal, he'll attack with deadly force.
Personality
She's laid-back, sharp-tongued, clumsy, and honestly, completely inept at her job. Her specialty dish is steamed sweet potatoes, which surprised Natsuki Subaru (lol). She's generally a bit of a standoff with everyone except Roswaal and her sister, Rem. However, she teaches Natsuki Subaru words and carefully teaches him how to do his job, saying it's for his own convenience. She's a very welcome presence for those in the industry (lol).
Demonization
Although Ram may seem useless now, she was once a horned demon. She was talented, with combat and physical abilities on par with Puck, and a sense of humor, and she was highly regarded by those around her. However, the Witch Cult appeared in the village where she lived and began burning it down. Ram's horns were broken by the Witch Cult, preventing her from transforming into a demon. The misfortune that befell this young girl who fought so desperately still deeply scars Ram and Rem.
Voice Actor
This is Rie Murakawa, the voice of Ram! She's just as beautiful as Ram! Unlike Ram's slightly tsundere voice, she has a lovely smile. She's forever 12 years old, so I won't go into that (lol). She's also an idol and a great singer.
Character 5: Rem

At first, Rem tries to kill Subaru because he smells like a witch (and she does), but as the series progresses, Natsuki Subaru becomes a special presence for her. She opens up her heart, is devoted enough to risk her life for Natsuki Subaru, and wants to stay by Subaru's side even if their feelings don't resonate. She also has a deep trust in Subaru, and even when he says mean things to her, she can still smile and talk about her future together. Her devotion, innocence, and purity are the reasons for her popularity!
Extremely Popular
Rem is the most popular character in Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World. She has absolute trust and respect for her sister, and her only boiling point is when it comes to her sister, Ram. Since then, she has developed a devoted love for Natsuki Subaru. Her single-mindedness, self-sacrificing love, and, above all, her adorable style are part of her charm. Character 6: Roswaal L. Mathers
Next up is Roswaal L. Mathers. He's the head of the Roswaal Mansion where Rem and Ram work, and is known for his distinctive clown-like attire. At 186 cm tall, he's a pretty impressive clown (lol). However, his clown makeup is apparently "battle attire." His speech is also distinctive, with languid lines like, "What do you want from me?" that he stretches out mid-sentence. His inner thoughts are hidden, and even in the first season, he remains quite mysterious.
Abilities
Although Roswaal didn't appear much in the first season, it's speculated that he'll actually become a key character in the second season. His combat ability is on a level that rivals a Sentai unit on his own. He possesses unparalleled strength, experience, knowledge, and physical abilities. And here's the biggest secret, and this is a spoiler: he is over 400 years old. However, his body is not that old. In fact, the consciousness of the original Roswaal resides within him. For the One I Love
This is Echidna, the witch who is said to appear in Season 2. I'll go into more detail in a separate article, but she is currently considered deceased. She looks a bit like Emilia, doesn't she? Roswaal fell in love with Echidna and continues to possess her consciousness in order to meet her. It kind of makes sense why she backed Emilia to become king.
Voice Actor
This is veteran voice actor Takehito Koyasu, who voices Roswaal. He's been active since 1988 and is a regular voice actor in the Gundam series! He's played an incredible range of roles, from boys and girls to young men! With his consistent acting skills and presence, he's sure to be a big hit in the second season.
Character 7: Beatrice
In Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World, Beatrice is perhaps the only loli character (lol). She's the young girl spirit who guards the Forbidden Book Archives at Roswaal Mansion. Her cuteness is simply overwhelming. She has tightly curled pigtails and a gorgeous outfit. She looks younger than anyone else, but she's always very calm and collected. That contrast is adorable! She also has a distinctive way of speaking, often ending her sentences with "I wonder if..." or "It's...." While she speaks in a feminine tone, she uses this tone no matter what the topic is, making her very distinctive.
Personality
She refers to herself as "Betty" and is often surly and self-centered. She can also be stubborn and refuse to admit her mistakes, but in reality, she's a kind, caring girl who easily gets lonely. She's also considerate, casually signing a contract to protect Subaru's life without asking him why, and letting him stay in the Forbidden Library without saying anything to his anxious neighbor. She dotes on Puck, lovingly calling him "Neecha." He's Subaru's savior, comrade-in-arms, and friend. She's a reliable guy!
Abilities
Beatrice has used a wide variety of abilities, including door-walking and spell-reversal. She's extremely reliable, possessing the skills to wield dark magic and a strong attitude. However, for some reason, Subaru sees through her door-walking skills, and her values are revealed to be cheating (lol). It's said that Beatrice was created by Satella, the Witch of Jealousy, and her past is particularly intriguing. It looks like things will get more interesting as we learn more about her!
Voice Actor
This is Satomi Arai, who voices Beatrice! She apparently had a unique voice, which led her to become a voice actress. It certainly is a distinctive voice. He debuted in 2001, playing leading roles. However, he initially focused on voiceover work, and anime debuted in 2005. While it might seem like the focus is on his voice, his exceptional acting skills and unique presence are addictive!
Character 8: Reinhard van Astrea
According to the author, Reinhard van Astrea, the knight among knights, is said to be the strongest character in the series. With his red hair, dignified white outfit, and handsome, dignified posture and calm demeanor, he's known as the perfect superhuman. He's always the hero who says, "That's enough," when things get tough! He's so cool!

Character 10: Wilhelm van Astrea
Wilhelm van Astrea was so popular with readers that he was promoted from a supporting character who barely even appeared in the plot to a main character. He's usually kind, but when it comes to combat, he's one of the best living people in the story.
